Poria cocos is traditionally used as both food and medicine. Triterpenoids in Poria cocos have a wide range of pharmacological activities, such as diuretic, sedative and tonic properties. In this study, the anti-tumor activities of poricoic acid A (PAA) and poricoic acid B (PAB), purified by high-speed counter-current chromatography, as well as their mechanisms and signaling pathways, were investigated using a HepG2 cell model. After treatment with PAA and PAB on HepG2 cells, the apoptosis was obviously increased (p < 0.05), and the cell cycle arrested in the G2/M phase. Studies showed that PAA and PAB can also inhibit the occurrence and development of tumor cells by stimulating the generation of ROS in tumor cells and inhibiting tumor migration and invasion. Combined Polymerase Chain Reaction and computer simulation of molecular docking were employed to explore the mechanism of tumor proliferation inhibition by PAA and PAB. By interfering with phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase/protein kinase B, Mitogen-activated protein kinases and p53 signaling pathways; and further affecting the expression of downstream caspases; matrix metalloproteinase family, cyclin-dependent kinase -cyclin, Intercellular adhesion molecules-1, Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 and Cyclooxygenase -2, may be responsible for their anti-tumor activity. Overall, the results suggested that PAA and PAB induced apoptosis, halted the cell cycle, and inhibited tumor migration and invasion through multi-pathway interactions, which may serve as a potential therapeutic agent against cancer.

On Site Renovation Of Degraded Pv Panels – Cost And Environmental Effective Technology, Vladislav Poulek, Igor Tyukhov, Vaclav Beranek
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The encapsulation of photovoltaic (PV) panels determines the trouble-free lifetime of the panels. The quality of PV panel encapsulating components has significantly decreased over the last 25 years. Consequently, large quantities of PV panels worldwide are experiencing degradation or damage much earlier than expected. To address this issue, an on-site renovation technology for PV panels has been developed, which involves pre-deposition diagnosis and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film deposition. This technology substantially prolongs the real field lifetime of PV panels. In terms of carbon footprint, PV panel renovation is over a hundred times more effective compared to PV panel replacement. It is …

Remaining Useful Life Prediction Of Bearings With Attention-Awared Graph Convolutional Network, Yupeng Wei, Dazhong Wu
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) have recently been used to predict the remaining useful life (RUL) of bearings due to its effectiveness in revealing correlations in condition monitoring data. However, traditional GCNs use a single graph only, either a temporal-correlated graph or a feature-correlated graph without considering both temporal and feature correlations of condition monitoring data. Additionally, traditional GCNs rely heavily on pre-defined graphs to aggregate correlated features. However, the topology of these pre-defined graphs may vary depending on a pre-defined threshold for cosine similarity or covariance which might affect prediction accuracy and robustness. To address these issues, we introduce a …

Due to socio-economic and climatic changes around the world, large outdoor fires in the built environment have become one of the global issues that threaten billions of people. The devastating effects of them are indicative of weaknesses in existing building codes and standard testing methodologies. This is due in part to our limited understanding of large outdoor fire exposures, including the ones from wildland to communities and within communities. To address this problem, the Ignition Resistance Committee (IRC) of the International Association of the Fire Safety Science working group ‘Large Outdoor Fires and the Built Environment’ was established. This manuscript …

Pay-As-You-Go Driving: Examining Possible Road-User Charge Rate Structures For California, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Samuel Speroni, Michael Manville, Brian D. Taylor
Mineta Transportation Institute
This report lays out principles to help California policymakers identify an optimal rate structure for a road-user charge (RUC). The rate structure is different from the rate itself. The rate is the price a driver pays, while the structure is the set of principles that govern how that price is set. We drew on existing research on rate setting in transportation, public utilities, and behavioral economics to develop a set of conceptual principles that can be used to evaluate rate structures, and then applied these principles to a set of mileage fee rate structure options. Key findings include that transportation …

Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) strike an effective balance between ionic conductivity and mechanical flexibility for lithium-ion solid-state batteries. Long-term performance, however, is limited by capacity fading after hundreds of charge and discharge cycles. The causes of performance degradation include multiple contributing factors such as dendrite formation, physicochemical changes in electrolytes, and structural remodeling of porous electrodes. Among the many factors that contribute to performance degradation, the effect of stress specifically on the composite electrolyte is not well understood. This study examines the mechanical changes in a poly(ethylene oxide) electrolyte with bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide. Two different sizes of Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 particles (500 nm …
