Understanding Tradeoffs In Clinical Text Extraction: Prompting, Retrieval-Augmented Generation, And Supervised Learning On Electronic Health Records, Tanya Yadav, Aditya Tekale, Jeff Chong, Mohammad Masum

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Clinical discharge summaries contain rich patient information but remain difficult to convert into structured representations for downstream analysis. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have introduced new approaches for clinical text extraction, yet their relative strengths compared with supervised methods remain unclear. This study presents a controlled evaluation of three dominant strategies for structured clinical information extraction from electronic health records: prompting-based extraction using LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation for terminology canonicalization, and supervised fine-tuning of domain-specific transformer models. Using discharge summaries from the MIMIC-IV dataset, we compare zero-shot, few-shot, and verification-based prompting across closed-source and open-source LLMs, evaluate retrieval-augmented canonicalization …

Activation-Guided Layer Selection For Lora, Aditya Dawadikar, Pooja Shyamsundar, Rashmi Vishwanath Bhat, Navrati Saxena

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) has become a widely adopted parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) technique for large language models (LLMs). LoRA’s benefits stem from its light weight and modular adapters. Standard LoRA applies adapters uniformly across all Transformer layers, implicitly assuming that each layer contributes equally to task adaptation. However, LLMs are found to have internal substructures that contribute in a disproportionate manner. In this work, we provide a theoretical analysis of how LoRA weight updates are influenced by a layer’s activation magnitude. We propose Act-LoRA, a simple activation-guided layer selection strategy for selective Low-Rank Adaptation. We evaluate this strategy for both encoder-only …

Public Perception Of Risk In Missing Persons Investigations, Harry Lockett, Stefana Juncu Mar 2026

Public Perception Of Risk In Missing Persons Investigations, Harry Lockett, Stefana Juncu

International Journal of Missing Persons

The current study investigated public perceptions of risk in missing person cases. A total of 271 participants were sequentially presented with five fictional vignettes describing missing individuals. Each case included a baseline description of the disappearance being "out of character" and four of these cases were paired with an additional risk factor: substance abuse, depression, dementia, or repeat missing status. The gender of the missing person was also manipulated between participants. Participants rated each case using both the standard categorical scale (Low/Medium/High) and an Extended Scale ranging from 1 to 7 and were also invited to respond to exploratory items …

Critical Thinking And Academic Writing In The Age Of Generative Ai: A Call To Lis Educators And Librarians, Sandra Hirsh Mar 2026

Critical Thinking And Academic Writing In The Age Of Generative Ai: A Call To Lis Educators And Librarians, Sandra Hirsh

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is reshaping academic writing, sparking both enthusiasm and anxiety across higher education. Using GenAI tools to summarize literature, suggest outlines, and draft text is becoming more commonplace, but it also raises important questions in today’s academic writing: Who is the author when GenAI is involved? What counts as original work? What does learning look like when writing is generated and modified by machines? These questions are closely tied to long-standing concerns in library and information science (LIS), such as information literacy, transparency, authenticity, authorship, and ethics. These further prompt us to ask a larger question: What …

Development Of A Framework For Identifying Asphalt Pavement Cracking Distresses Using Machine Learning, Dingxin Cheng Mar 2026

Development Of A Framework For Identifying Asphalt Pavement Cracking Distresses Using Machine Learning, Dingxin Cheng

Mineta Transportation Institute

Asphalt pavement cracking is one of the most critical distresses affecting pavement performance and service life. When pavement deteriorates, it can lead to safety hazards, higher vehicle maintenance costs, and expensive repairs for cities and states—making early detection essential for everyone who relies on the roadway system. To address this challenge, the research team developed a prototype cracking identification system that integrates a customized machine learning model with computer vision algorithms. High-resolution images collected from drones or ground-based cameras are processed within the system to automatically detect and classify major cracking types. The core of the framework utilizes the You …

The Instrumental Value Of Private Regulation: Evidence From The Case Of Corporate Non-Financial Reporting, Matthew Maguire Feb 2026

The Instrumental Value Of Private Regulation: Evidence From The Case Of Corporate Non-Financial Reporting, Matthew Maguire

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Critics of private regulation argue that voluntary standards often fail to meaningfully improve corporate conduct while simultaneously functioning as a stumbling block that prevents the development of more stringent, mandatory regulation by states. This paper complicates this view by illustrating the instrumental value of private regulation—that is, its potential to act as a building block that facilitates the development of new government regulation that serves the public interest. Through a combination of in-depth interviews and analysis of publicly available documents, I examine the impact of voluntary corporate non-financial reporting on public policy over the period 1997–2025. The analysis highlights the …

As the largest active carbon reservoir on Earth, the ocean is a cornerstone of the global carbon cycle, playing a pivotal role in modulating ocean health and the Earth’s climate system. Understanding these crucial roles requires access to a broad array of data products documenting the changing chemistry of the global ocean as a vast and interconnected system. This review article provides an overview of 68 existing ocean carbonate chemistry data products and data product sets, encompassing compilations of cruise datasets, derived gap-filled data products, model simulations, and compilations thereof. It is intended to help researchers identify and access data …

Immigrant Firms’ Commitment And Survival: Does Owner Identity Matter?, Nathaniel C. Lupton, Sarika Pruthi, Alfredo Jiménez Feb 2026

Immigrant Firms’ Commitment And Survival: Does Owner Identity Matter?, Nathaniel C. Lupton, Sarika Pruthi, Alfredo Jiménez

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

How does immigrant ownership influence small firm survival in comparison with that of family ownership? While it is generally accepted that socioemotional wealth (SEW) preservation motivates family firms to avoid taking risks, this effect has not been considered in immigrant-owned firms. Many of the same affinity factors are likely to influence the survival of both ownership types, but we argue that immigrant-owned firms may experience them more strongly as they reside at the intersection of the liabilities of smallness and foreignness. Drawing on a large sample of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Ecuador, we find that immigrant-owned firms have …

Explainable Multi-Modal Deep Learning For Transparent Cancer Diagnosis: Integrating Radiology, Clinical Features, And Decision Visualization, Sital Dash, Laxmi Bewoor, Yashwant Dongre, Amol Bhosle, Kailas Patil, Shrikant Jadhav, Banani Mohapatra, Bhavnish Walia Feb 2026

Explainable Multi-Modal Deep Learning For Transparent Cancer Diagnosis: Integrating Radiology, Clinical Features, And Decision Visualization, Sital Dash, Laxmi Bewoor, Yashwant Dongre, Amol Bhosle, Kailas Patil, Shrikant Jadhav, Banani Mohapatra, Bhavnish Walia

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Introduction: Although artificial intelligence–based cancer diagnostic models have demonstrated strong predictive performance, their lack of transparency and reliance on single-modality data continue to limit clinical trust and adoption. Effectively integrating multi-modal data with interpret-able decision-making remains a key challenge. Methods: We propose an explainable multi-modal deep learning framework that integrates radiological imaging and structured clinical features using attention-based fusion. Image-level explanations are generated using Grad-CAM++, while SHAP is employed to quantify clinical feature contributions, enabling unified and cross-modal aligned interpretation rather than independent uni-modal explanations. The framework was evaluated on publicly available datasets, including CBIS-DDSM mammography, Duke Breast Cancer MRI, …

Alternative Project Delivery Methods In California: The Path Forward, Ghada M. Gad, Maria Calahorra Jimenez, Chaimae Nacir, Ronald Shrestha

Mineta Transportation Institute

Alternative Project Delivery Methods (APDMs) are increasingly being recognized as effective alternatives to the traditional Design-Bid-Build (DBB) approach for transportation projects. As APDMs gain traction among California’s transportation agencies, understanding the legislative frameworks that enable their use and the characteristics of each method is critical. This study benchmarks the existing use of APDMs in California transportation agencies of varying types and sizes, while considering the characteristics (advantages and barriers/challenges to implementation) of each APDM and the authorizations enabling its implementation. Based on these findings, it also provides recommendations for key factors to consider in APDM selection and implementation. The study …

A Hydrogen Hub Blueprint For The California Supply Chain, Tyler Reeb, Barbara Taylor Feb 2026

A Hydrogen Hub Blueprint For The California Supply Chain, Tyler Reeb, Barbara Taylor

Mineta Transportation Institute

As global climate targets tighten and state regulations accelerate, hydrogen technology presents a significant opportunity to help California supply chain and transportation stakeholders comply with state emissions mandates and global goals aimed to reduce the impacts of climate change. However, while fuel cell costs and infrastructure have received attention, workforce development remains overlooked. Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are especially promising for diesel-reliant sectors that are hard to decarbonize without negatively impacting operational efficiency. But scaling hydrogen vehicles and infrastructure in tandem with emerging consumer and industrial markets will not be easy. State and federal policies, often conflicting, further …

How Can Zhu Xi’S Resources Contribute To The Feminist Progressive Project? A Reflection On The Study Of Zhu Xi’S Theory Of Kun Way-Making, Kun Wang Jan 2026

How Can Zhu Xi’S Resources Contribute To The Feminist Progressive Project? A Reflection On The Study Of Zhu Xi’S Theory Of Kun Way-Making, Kun Wang

Comparative Philosophy

In Zhu Xi’s theory of cultivation, kun way-making (kun-dao坤道) to cultivate the virtue of kun (kun-de 坤德) goes ahead to qian way-making (qian-dao乾道), in which the virtue of qian (qian-de 乾德) is cultivated. In this theory, everyone is encouraged to cultivate kun way-making, which it happens that women represent. It is worth noting that the theory faces an issue of potential inconsistency between the “gendered” construction of qian-kun 乾坤 and the positive absence (kong-que空闕), the pivot of the cultivating process, where the renegotiation of the virtues of qian-kun is attuned to optimal …

A Constructive-Engaging Analysis Of Descarrtes (European) And Oyeshile (African) On Personhood, Olanrewaju Shitta-Bey Jan 2026

A Constructive-Engaging Analysis Of Descarrtes (European) And Oyeshile (African) On Personhood, Olanrewaju Shitta-Bey

Comparative Philosophy

An examination of the nature of the human person provides a crucial foundation for understanding human life and identity. Conceptions of personhood have far-reaching implications beyond philosophy, influencing politics, ethics, religion, and epistemology. Beliefs about what constitutes a person shapes theories of rights, responsibility, and justice; moral views on duty and accountability; religious understandings of the soul and the afterlife; and epistemological reflections on the sources and limits of knowledge. Inquiry into human nature is therefore not merely abstract, but central to understanding social organization and individual conduct. This paper examines two influential accounts of human nature drawn from distinct …

A Critique Of Ziporyn’S Interpretation Of Early Chinese Thought: From The Constructive-Engagement Vantage Point, Xiaoqiao Liu Jan 2026

A Critique Of Ziporyn’S Interpretation Of Early Chinese Thought: From The Constructive-Engagement Vantage Point, Xiaoqiao Liu

Comparative Philosophy

Sameness and difference are among the most fundamental and yet most tension-laden categories in philosophy, bearing directly on the conditions under which judgment, classification, and meaning become possible. This article critically reconstructs and compares two influential but methodologically divergent approaches to this issue in contemporary comparative philosophy. One is Brook Ziporyn’s idea of coherence, which seeks to articulate a non-substantialist metaphysics as a response to tensions internal to the Western metaphysical tradition. The other is Bo Mou’s enhanced account of relative identity, which revises both absolute and modern relative identity theories through a bottom-up, semantically grounded framework oriented toward cross-tradition …

Father Knows Best? Not Here: Metaphors Of Kinship And Kingship In Haudenosaunee, Aristotelian, And Confucian Political Thought, Ian Kalman Jan 2026

Father Knows Best? Not Here: Metaphors Of Kinship And Kingship In Haudenosaunee, Aristotelian, And Confucian Political Thought, Ian Kalman

Comparative Philosophy

The notion that the organization of large-scale social structures are rooted in domestic ones has a longstanding history in both Chinese and Greek classical political philosophy. Aristotle and Confucius independently reasoned that a good family, one with a strong father, mapped onto a good state, one with a strong king - though they differed on the details. While there is a strong literature juxtaposing these two titans, less attention has been paid to how their ideas compare with other philosophical traditions. This article provides an anthropological intervention to the comparative study of Confucius and Aristotle – while both autonomously argued …

The Coherence Of Navayāna Pragmatism: Ambedkar And The Pragmatist Reconstruction Of Buddhist Philosophy, Danish Hamid Jan 2026

The Coherence Of Navayāna Pragmatism: Ambedkar And The Pragmatist Reconstruction Of Buddhist Philosophy, Danish Hamid

Comparative Philosophy

This paper examines the philosophical coherence of B.R. Ambedkar’s reconstruction of his (Navayāna) Buddhism in relation to John Dewey’s pragmatism. Building on Scott Stroud’s reading of Ambedkar as a Deweyan Pragmatist (2017, 2023), it argues that Dewey’s evolutionary naturalism, his conception of growth, and pragmatic redefinition of concepts provide Ambedkar with the methodological tools for a naturalistic and socially reconstructive reinterpretation of Buddhist doctrines such as anicca (impermanence), dhamma (Buddha’s teaching), nirvāṇa (enlightenment), karuna (compassion), etc. Ambedkar transforms impermanence from a metaphysics of flux into an ethics of progressive growth, and recasts dhamma as a social morality grounded in fraternity …

Challenging The Double-Negation Principle: An Analysis Of Strategic Theories Of Sun Zi, Carnot, And Clausewitz Through Intuitionist Logic, Antonino Drago Jan 2026

Challenging The Double-Negation Principle: An Analysis Of Strategic Theories Of Sun Zi, Carnot, And Clausewitz Through Intuitionist Logic, Antonino Drago

Comparative Philosophy

To study a subject similarly represented in Eastern and Western cultures, I examine some classical theories of war strategy according to a new analytical method. This method is based on the recognition that the most important strategic theories are organized as theories essentially not deduced from axioms according to classical logic. Such theories reason through doubly negated propositions (DNPs), whose meanings differ from those of their affirmative counterparts. This corresponds to the use of intuitionist logic instead of classical logic. An inspection of the works of the texts of Sun Zi, Lazare Carnot, and Clausewitz reveals many such propositions, and …

A Recurrent Neural Network For Forecasting Dead Fuel Moisture Content With Inputs From Numerical Weather Models, Jonathon Hirschi, Jan Mandel, Kyle Hilburn, Angel Farguell Jan 2026

A Recurrent Neural Network For Forecasting Dead Fuel Moisture Content With Inputs From Numerical Weather Models, Jonathon Hirschi, Jan Mandel, Kyle Hilburn, Angel Farguell

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This paper proposes a recurrent neural network (RNN) model of dead 10 h fuel moisture content (FMC) for real-time forecasting. Weather inputs to the RNN are forecasts from the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR), a numerical weather model. Geographic predictors include longitude, latitude, and elevation. Forecast accuracy is estimated in a study that utilizes a spatiotemporal cross-validation scheme. The RNN is trained on HRRR forecasts and observed FMC from weather station sensors within the Rocky Mountain region in 2023, then used to forecast FMC at new locations for all of 2024. The model is evaluated using a 48 h forecast window. …

Numerical Modeling Of Climate Change Impacts On Transportation Embankments, Amr Morsy, Mamata Sapkota, Emma Varela, Odalys Portillo Jan 2026

Numerical Modeling Of Climate Change Impacts On Transportation Embankments, Amr Morsy, Mamata Sapkota, Emma Varela, Odalys Portillo

Mineta Transportation Institute

Embankments are essential components of transportation infrastructure, providing crucial support for long stretches of highways, railways, and other routes in California and around the world. Clay embankments are susceptible to weather-related deterioration processes that can gradually compromise their stability and, in some cases, lead to unexpected failures. Climate change, along with the associated shifts in weather patterns, is projected to adversely impact the weather-related deterioration processes, leading to exacerbated failures and/or shorter service life. Additionally, climate change is projected to increase the frequency of extreme precipitation events, leading to an increase in embankment failure potential. This study evaluated (1) the …
