Single-Cell Enumeration Of An Uncultivated Tm7 Subgroup In The, Cleber C. Ouverney, Gary C. Armitage, David A. Relman
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Specific oligonucleotide hybridization conditions were established for single-cell enumeration of uncultivated TM7 and IO25 bacteria by using clones expressing heterologous 16S rRNA. In situ analysis of human subgingival crevice specimens revealed that a greater proportion of samples from sites of chronic periodontitis than from healthy sites contained TM7 subgroup IO25. In addition, IO25 bacterial cells from periodontitis site samples were more abundant and fourfold longer than IO25 cells from healthy site samples.

Cultivation Of Tropheryma Whipplei From Cerebrospinal Fluid, Matthias Maiwald, Axel Von Herbay, David N. Fredricks, Cleber C. Ouverney, Jon C. Kosek, David A. Relman
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Whipple disease (WD) is a systemic disorder caused by the bacterium Tropheryma whipplei. Since the recognition of a bacterial etiology in 1961, many attempts have been made to cultivate this bacterium in vitro. It was eventually isolated, in 2000, from an infected heart valve, in coculture with human fibroblasts. Here we report the isolation of 2 new strains of T. whipplei from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 2 patients with intestinal WD but no neurological signs or symptoms. One culture-positive specimen was obtained before treatment; the other was obtained 12 months after discontinuation of therapy, at a time of intestinal remission. …

Saving City Lifelines: Lessons Learned In The 9-11 Terrorist Attacks, Mti Report 02-06, Brian M. Jenkins
Mineta Transportation Institute
This case study of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks examines how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, New York City Transit, Port Authority, and other transit systems responded to the events of 9-11, and how the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) worked to coordinate response and recovery operations; it also seeks to identify those lessons that can be captured before participants rotate or retire, memories dim, and what was learned is lost. The scope is limited to the evaluation of transit response, not other surface transportation elements such as bridges and tunnels, which seemed to function quite well and could be …

All The News That’S Fat To Print: The American "Obesity Epidemic" And The Media, Natalie Boero
All The News That’S Fat To Print: The American "Obesity Epidemic" And The Media, Natalie Boero
Faculty Publications, Sociology
Increasingly the term epidemic is being used to describe the current prevalence of fatness in the United States. Skyrocketing rates of obesity among all groups of Americans, particularly children, the poor, and minorities, have become a major public health concern. Indeed, it is difficult to open a newspaper or magazine without encountering a discussion of the expanding American waistline and the health problems associated therewith. In this paper I use 751 New York Times articles on obesity to examine the media construction of the obesity epidemic. I show that there is not one dominant discourse (i.e. medicine) constructing this epidemic, …
The Role Of Indigenous Parataxonomists In Botanical Inventory: From Herbarium Amboinense To Herbarium Floresense, Jeanine Pfeiffer, Yeremias Uril
The Role Of Indigenous Parataxonomists In Botanical Inventory: From Herbarium Amboinense To Herbarium Floresense, Jeanine Pfeiffer, Yeremias Uril
Faculty Publications, Environmental Studies
The enormous taxonomic scope of the Flora Malesiana Project is exacerbated by the extremely short supply of trained researchers and taxonomic experts available to undertake this task. The vast number of indigenous botanical experts resident in Malesia represents a potentially valuable, yet largely unrecognised and untapped, resource. By engaging in collaborative research with indigenous parataxonomists, Flora Malesiana researchers can develop field methodologies that enable a more comprehensive and accurate assessment of the botanical resources of the region while simultaneously enrolling local communities in the sustainable, long-term conservation of native biocultural diversity. This paper outlines a number of projects involving indigenous …

Attitudes Of Mexican American Women Regarding Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus And Its Management, Ofelia M. Bustos
Attitudes Of Mexican American Women Regarding Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus And Its Management, Ofelia M. Bustos
Master's Projects
Latinos are twice as likely as the general population to have diabetes. Hispanic women with diabetes are medically undeserved. The purpose of this study was to examine Mexican American women's attitudes about type 2 diabetes and its treatment. A convenience sample of 43 Mexican American women, > 18 years of age, and residing in Northern California participated in this descriptive/exploratory non-randomized survey conducted in February and March 2003. The Diabetes Attitude Scale was used to measure the attitudes of Mexican American women about type 2 diabetes and its treatment. Results supported the beliefs that health care professionals needed special training to …

Future Development In San Jose’S Coyote Valley, Michelle H. Fisk
Future Development In San Jose’S Coyote Valley, Michelle H. Fisk
Master's Projects
This Planning Study reviews the city planning procedure that Cisco Systems would need to follow in order to build its proposed campus in the City of San Jose’s North Coyote Valley Campus Industrial Area. It is a controversial subject with both pros and cons, which I will examine throughout this study. Research was conducted using primarily written articles about different viewpoints on this topic, attending community meetings and listening to community members, as well as interviewing City of San Jose Planning Department staff.
