On The Prediction Of Extreme Ecological Events, Mark W. Denny, Luke J. H. Hunt, Luke P. Miller, Christopher D. G. Harley Aug 2009

On The Prediction Of Extreme Ecological Events, Mark W. Denny, Luke J. H. Hunt, Luke P. Miller, Christopher D. G. Harley

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Ecological studies often focus on average effects of environmental factors, but ecological dynamics may depend as much upon environmental extremes. Ecology would therefore benefit from the ability to predict the frequency and severity of extreme environmental events. Some extreme events (e.g., earthquakes) are simple events: either they happen or they don't, and they are generally difficult to predict. In contrast, extreme ecological events are often compound events, resulting from the chance coincidence of run-of-the-mill factors. Here we present an environmental bootstrap method for resampling short-term environmental data (rolling the environmental dice) to calculate an ensemble of hypothetical time series that …

The Role Of Temperature And Desiccation Stress In Limiting The Local-Scale Distribution Of The Owl Limpet, Lottia Gigantea, Luke P. Miller, Christopher D. G. Harley, Mark W. Denny Aug 2009

The Role Of Temperature And Desiccation Stress In Limiting The Local-Scale Distribution Of The Owl Limpet, Lottia Gigantea, Luke P. Miller, Christopher D. G. Harley, Mark W. Denny

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

1 Small-scale distributions of rocky intertidal organisms may be determined in part by temperature and desiccation stress during low tide and the ability of organisms to resist such stresses. Biophysical modelling techniques, coupled with data on the physiological tolerance of organisms can be used to predict the frequency and severity of abiotic stress events.

2 The limpet Lottia gigantea is a major competitor for primary space on rocky shores along the west coast of North America. The goal of this study was to quantify the thermal and desiccation tolerance of this species and to predict the frequency of stressful events …

Triangle Network Motifs Predict Complexes By Complementing High-Error Interactomes With Structural Information, Bill Andreopoulos, Christof Winter, Dirk Labudde, Michael Schroeder Jun 2009

Triangle Network Motifs Predict Complexes By Complementing High-Error Interactomes With Structural Information, Bill Andreopoulos, Christof Winter, Dirk Labudde, Michael Schroeder

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

BackgroundA lot of high-throughput studies produce protein-protein interaction networks (PPINs) with many errors and missing information. Even for genome-wide approaches, there is often a low overlap between PPINs produced by different studies. Second-level neighbors separated by two protein-protein interactions (PPIs) were previously used for predicting protein function and finding complexes in high-error PPINs. We retrieve second level neighbors in PPINs, and complement these with structural domain-domain interactions (SDDIs) representing binding evidence on proteins, forming PPI-SDDI-PPI triangles.ResultsWe find low overlap between PPINs, SDDIs and known complexes, all well below 10%. We evaluate the overlap of PPI-SDDI-PPI triangles with known complexes from …

Information Needs Of Faculty Members And Research Scholars Of Chaudhary Charan Singh University: A Case Study, Devendra Kumar Jun 2009

Information Needs Of Faculty Members And Research Scholars Of Chaudhary Charan Singh University: A Case Study, Devendra Kumar

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper analyzes the information needs and use pattern among faculty members and research scholars of Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut's university campus and six district colleges: Meerut, Bulandshahar, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Baghpat, and Ghaziabad. A structured questionnaire was distributed among 425 faculty members and research scholars, of whom 200 (47.05%) responded. The study examines the purpose of visits to the library, use of different types of information sources, current literature in the field of interest, and difficulties faced in accessing information. The paper examines the preference for information sources and their use. Statistical analysis was done by applying simple percentage …

The Role Of Transportation In Campus Emergency Planning, Mti Report 08-06, Frances Edwards, Daniel C. Goodrich

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina created the greatest natural disaster in American history. The states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama sustained significant damage, including 31 colleges and universities. Other institutions of higher education, most notably Louisiana State University (LSU), became resources to the disaster area. This is just one of the many examples of disaster impacts on institutions of higher education. The Federal Department of Homeland Security, under Homeland Security Presidential Directive–5, requires all public agencies that want to receive federal preparedness assistance to comply with the National Incident Management System (NIMS), which includes the creation of an Emergency Operations Plan …

The Use Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine For Menopausal Symptoms Among Chinese-American Women, Rebecca Kwai-Ying Chung May 2009

The Use Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine For Menopausal Symptoms Among Chinese-American Women, Rebecca Kwai-Ying Chung

Master's Projects

The objectives of this research were to study the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for menopausal symptoms among Chinese-American women, and to examine the correlation between CAM use, acculturation, and CAM insurance coverage. The study revealed that Chinese-American women experience menopausal symptoms even when they still have regular menstrual cycles. Early education on women's health, especially about menopause, is recommended. A significant correlation was found between the women being asked by their health care providers regarding CAM use, and open discussion regarding the women's CAM use with their health care providers (p<0.05). The researchers suggest that health care providers ask their patients about their CAM use in order to encourage open discussion of CAM use with their patients.

Productivity Environmental Preference Survey (Peps) Of Undergraduate Nursing Students - A Generational Perspective, Susana Machado May 2009

Productivity Environmental Preference Survey (Peps) Of Undergraduate Nursing Students - A Generational Perspective, Susana Machado

Master's Projects

A change in the generational demographics of college students is occurring throughout the United States. By 2012, the number of Millennial students, those born from 1982 to 2003, will jump from 44 percent to 75 percent of the total college enrollment. It has been suggested that their methods of learning are different from those of previous generations. The purpose of this study was to identify and compare individual productivity and learning style preferences of undergraduate nursing students that fall into the Generation X and Millennial age cohort. Using the Dunn & Dunn Learning Style Model and the Productivity Environmental Preferences …

Effects Of Information Literacy Skills On The Use Of E-Library Resources Among Students Of The University Of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, Abdulwahab Olanrewaju Issa, Amusan Blessing, Umma Dauda Daura

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study investigated the effects of information literacy skills on the use of e-library resources among students of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. A survey was used to collect data from 72 students, and interviews were conducted with some library staff. The study reveals that although a majority (61.11%) claimed awareness of the availability of e-resources, only 25 (34.72%) make use of them. The study recommends that the university adopt information literacy standards and being teaching information literacy.
