Young people are increasingly forming and expressing civic identities in digital spaces. Yet, digital media literacy interventions have had limited success translating these competencies into sociopolitical action and, in some cases, may even constrain youth online civic engagement. This sequential mixed-methods study examines factors shaping youth online critical action using panel survey data (n = 704), followed by qualitative re-analysis of interviews (n = 23) with youth aged 15–24 to further unpack patterns identified in the survey findings. Guided by critical consciousness and neo-ecological frameworks, quantitative findings indicate that exposure to digital media education, particularly instruction focused on researching and …

What To Expect When You’Re Expecting Passenger Rail: How Central Valley Communities Are Preparing For High-Speed Rail, Josephine K. Hazelton-Bpyle, Naomi Bick Jun 2026

What To Expect When You’Re Expecting Passenger Rail: How Central Valley Communities Are Preparing For High-Speed Rail, Josephine K. Hazelton-Bpyle, Naomi Bick

Mineta Transportation Institute

Approved by California voters in 2008, the California High-Speed Rail (CAHSR) project is a planned 800-mile rail corridor across California aimed at delivering intercity passenger rail service to the state’s largest metropolitan areas. This was the first voter-approved high-speed rail project in the United States and remains one of its most contentious. The first phase of the project’s construction is currently underway in California’s Central Valley, including many communities that initially opposed CAHSR. While supporters champion increased connectivity and the provision of environmentally sustainable transportation alternatives, critics contend the project’s benefits will not outweigh its environmental costs and economic disruptions. …

Depth-Dependent Suppression Of Bipolar Degradation In 4h-Sic Diodes Via Proton Implantation And Evaluation Of Safe Operating Current Density Range, Atsushi Shimbori, Ryota Wada, Nobuhiro Tokoro, Takashi Kuroi, Hiu Yung Wong, Alex Q. Huang

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This work explores the role of implantation depth in suppressing bipolar degradation of 4H-SiC PiN diodes through proton implantation. Targeting depths aligned with active basal plane dislocations (BPDs) effectively reduces stacking-fault expansion, as confirmed by electroluminescence imaging [1,2]. From these observations, we quantified the effective range of suppression in both depth and safe operating current density. Room-temperature proton implantation (170keV, 1×1016 cm-2) into the buffer reduced forward-voltage drift ΔVF by 97% at 600A/cm2 . The implanted diode extended the safe operating current range to 1300A/cm2, ~200A/cm2 higher than the reference, confirming effective suppression …

Hybrid Densenet-U-Net Framework For Automated Grading Of Renal Cell Carcinoma, Rohini Jadhav, Banani Mohapatra, Bhavnish Walia, Sital Dash, Kailas Patil, Shrikant Jadhav, Ishwari Rohit Raskar

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Introduction: Precisely grading renal cell carcinoma (RCC) through histopathology slides is a requisite to predict the cancer prognosis and select treatments, however, there is a considerable variability in the assessment between observers. While some AI systems mainly rely on transformer-based and nuclei-centric models, they are computationally very demanding so their clinical use is thus limited. Hence, there is a need for practical and easy-to-understand solutions that can be integrated into digital pathology workflows. Methods: We built a hybrid framework that integrates U-Net-based tumor segmentation, convolutional feature extraction, nuclei-aware descriptors, stain normalization, and attention-based multiple instance learning for slide-level RCC grading. …

Building A Road To Mitigate Ambulance Patient Offload Time (Apot), William J. Manguil May 2026

Building A Road To Mitigate Ambulance Patient Offload Time (Apot), William J. Manguil

Doctoral Projects

Emergency departments (EDs) worldwide are experiencing increased utilization resulting in care delays for patients seeking urgent treatment. Despite critical circumstances that warrant emergency medical services (EMS) response, patients arriving to the ED via ambulance remain vulnerable to delays in care due to prolonged ambulance patient offload times (APOTs). The amount of health care providers and treatment space necessary to initiate care are both limited and often strained resources which dictate the need for innovative interventions to prevent patient harm. The following project outlines the interventions implemented at the project site to improve APOT as a means to enhance patient safety …

Many-Body Benchmark Of Electronic Charge And Spin Densities For Li1–Xnio2, Abdul Ghaffar, Shenli Zhang, Liwen F. Wan, Kayahan Saritas, Fernando A. Reboredo, Jaron T. Krogel

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Accurate benchmarks are particularly important for highly correlated oxides as mean-field approximations often fail to describe the subtle balance of charge transfer and magnetism in these materials with an accuracy comparable to experimental needs. Here we present accurate diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) results of the electronic charge and spin densities for the tunable highly correlated oxide Li1–xNiO2 for x = 0, 1/2, and 1. To enable quantitative comparisons, we introduce a robust density-partitioning scheme, extending Voronoi analysis to assign atomic charges from spatially noisy DMC densities. We then benchmark common approximations used in density functional theory (DFT). Comparison against DMC …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Nurse-Initiated Post-Discharge Phone Call In The Prevention Of Hospital Readmissions For Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Sierra Kane May 2026

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Nurse-Initiated Post-Discharge Phone Call In The Prevention Of Hospital Readmissions For Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Sierra Kane
