Identifying Parkinson’S Disease From Gait Biomechanics Using A Participant-Level Machine Learning Analysis Pipeline, Li Jin
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor control, balance, and gait impairments that significantly elevate fall risk. Traditional gait analysis focuses on spatiotemporal parameters, while gait variability, asymmetry, and balance measures offer more sensitive indicators of PD-related motor deficits. Machine learning studies using wearable gait data frequently report high classification accuracy but lack biomechanical interpretability and methodological rigor. Using the PhysioNet Gait in Parkinson’s Disease database, 93 individuals with PD and 72 healthy controls were analyzed during level-ground walking. Key biomechanical differences were identified: stride time coefficient of variation was significantly higher in PD bilaterally (left …
System Branding In Three Public Libraries: Live Oak Public Libraries, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, And Richland Library, Patrick Roughen
System Branding In Three Public Libraries: Live Oak Public Libraries, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, And Richland Library, Patrick Roughen
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article examines library catalogs as brand artifacts in the context of two ancient libraries: the Library of Alexandria and the library of the Temple of Horus at Edfu, Egypt. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic capital and brand theory, this research argues that the catalogs of these two institutions functioned as early branding instruments. The Pinakes, the catalog of the Library of Alexandria, projected a brand of universal knowledge and intellectual prestige, and the inscribed wall catalog at Edfu reflected a brand focused on sacred authority and the sustaining of cosmic order (Ma'at). Together, they illustrate two opposing …

Freedom Of Thought And Speech: Charles C. Burleigh And The Refraction Of Quaker Principles In Abolitionist Non-Violence, Jennifer Rycenga
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Charles C. Burleigh (1810-1878), an important American Abolitionist speaker, agent, and theorist, was also an advocate for non-violent resistance. He had many opportunities across his 30+ years fighting slavery to test his non-violent principles, due to mob violence against Abolitionist gatherings. At some of the most significant of these events, such as the destruction of the Abolitionist's Pennsylvania Hall in 1838, Burleigh witnessed the strength and resolve of African-American and white women in upholding non-violence and moral suasion.
While Burleigh never became a member of the Society of Friends, his life and thought run parallel to ideas and practices of …

Commercial capture fisheries worldwide are susceptible to perturbations and sudden declines, also known as shocks. While management reforms and diversification within wild fisheries have provided some stability, it is less clear how parallel sources of seafood production, such as aquaculture, fit into these dynamics, past and present. Marine aquaculture (mariculture) is one way to increase seafood supply as demand increases and fisheries landings potentially become more variable. This study examined historical trends in marine fisheries and mariculture in the state of California, U.S.A., with an aim to empirically understand local ‘blue transitions’, i.e. shifts from wild to farmed production. Words Can Hurt: A Review Of Racial Microaggressions And Their Effects On Cortisol Level, Edgar Perez-Lopez
McNair Research Journal SJSU
The study examines the impact of racial microaggressions on cortisol levels,
highlighting inconsistent findings across various research methodologies.
Microaggressions--subtle discriminatory actions--are linked to stress and
can raise cortisol levels, a hormone released in response to stress. Some
studies suggest that frequent microaggressions blunt cortisol response,
making it less available for future stressors, while others reported increased
cortisol levels. The divergence in results may be due to differences in
research designs, such as cross-sectional, interpersonal research, or
nomothetic, versus longitudinal, intrapersonal research, or idiographic
approaches. Combined, the results of each type of research proves chronic
and acute impact of microaggressions. The …

traditional Western gender roles. It divides the philosophical concept of
Plato’s “platonic love” as fully realized Eros from the basic social
interpretation of “platonic” relationships as connections devoid of sexual or
romantic feelings. Aristotle's definitions of friendship, divided into the three
categories of pleasure, utility, and virtue, are compared to friendships

friendships are found to more often fall into friendships of utility and
pleasure, while women's friendships …
Explainable Multi-Agent Llm Framework For Phishing Email Detection Via Role-Specialized Evidence Decomposition, Tanya Yadav, Mohammad Masum
Explainable Multi-Agent Llm Framework For Phishing Email Detection Via Role-Specialized Evidence Decomposition, Tanya Yadav, Mohammad Masum
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Phishing email remains a persistent and operationally critical cybersecurity threat, yet existing detection approaches, including traditional machine learning and single-pass large language model systems, either lack native interpretability or provide explanations that are difficult to standardize and audit. This paper introduces an explainable multi-agent LLM framework that decomposes phishing evidence across three role-specialized agents focused on linguistic patterns, psychological manipulation, and sender identity consistency. The framework then aggregates specialist outputs through schema-governed synthesis, enabling each intermediate and final decision to be structured, comparable, and auditable. The central contribution is the treatment of role-specialized evidence decomposition and explanation structure as first-class …

Conceptual Thermal Constraints On The Growth Of The First Tree On A Terraformed Mars, Agnieszka Wendland, Piotr Pałka, Robert Olszewski, Alison F.C. Bridger, Melinda A. Kahre, Christian Körner, Christopher P. Mckay
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The environmental conditions on present‑day Mars are far outside the range tolerated by known complex terrestrial life. Conceptual climate studies have suggested that, in hypothetical terraforming scenarios, artificially enhancing the greenhouse effect could restore Mars to more habitable surface conditions. Early colonizing terrestrial life on a warming Mars would plausibly consist of lichens and high‑alpine or high‑arctic plants. Here, we consider a later, more demanding step and investigate the thermal conditions under which the first tree could, in principle, grow on the Martian surface. Based on empirical treeline studies, we adopt thermal thresholds for a representa‑ tive high‑elevation conifer: a …

The asphalt industry faces major challenges, including the need for pavements that last longer and are more sustainable, as traditional asphalt production is costly and has a high environmental impact. To address this, researchers have been exploring modified asphalt binders such as rubber, charcoal, and waste cooking oil, which have shown promise in extending the lifespan, resistance to deformation, and durability of asphalt pavements. In addition, governments and industries are investing in the use of recycled and “green” materials to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental degradation of conventional asphalt mixtures. Building on this momentum, this study investigates the performance …

Accurate language assessment is essential in clinical and research contexts. However, most assessment tools and questionnaires have been developed within monolingual frameworks, overlooking the particularities of the vast multilingual population and, thus, often leading to misdiagnosis and inequitable care. Here, we examine the limitations of monolingual-centric approaches to language testing in multilinguals with acquired and progressive neurogenic disorders and explore the implications of multilingualism across linguistic, cognitive, neural, clinical, and sociocultural domains. We also address the need for technological innovation and theoretical refinement to better accommodate linguistic diversity in healthcare. Ultimately, we advocate for a nuanced, equitable, and culturally sensitive …

The Caspian Sea, the Earth's largest inland water body, faces water level decline, drawing comparisons to the collapse of the Aral Sea. Unlike the Aral Sea, the relative roles of climatic variability, hydrological changes, and anthropogenic pressures on the Caspian Sea remain poorly understood. Here, we integrate satellite observations, in situ hydrological records and reanalysis data to examine recent drivers of the Caspian water loss. We show that total river inflow to the Caspian Sea has declined significantly, primarily due to reduced discharge from the Volga River. At the same time, precipitation over the basin has remained broadly stable, while …
