Implementing An Embedded Information Literacy Program At The University Level: Best Practices, Ann Agee Sep 2007

Implementing An Embedded Information Literacy Program At The University Level: Best Practices, Ann Agee

Faculty and Staff Publications

Information literacy is the ability of individuals "to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information" (American Library Association, 1989, para. 3). At San Jose State University (SJSU), information literacy has been traditionally taught through one-shot, 50-minute lectures delivered by university librarians to students enrolled in a select few undergraduate courses. This method of instruction has proven to be neither sustainable nor effective. The lectures are not tailored by discipline and students might receive the same lecture several times while completing their lower-division coursework. SJSU wants to replace this format …

Standing Up For Open Source, Lee David Jaffe, Greg Careaga Jun 2007

Standing Up For Open Source, Lee David Jaffe, Greg Careaga

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The open source movement is a vital and innovative challenger to commercial channels for software and publishing. Interests and values shared between libraries and open source communities, along with significant functional advantages to the open source model, should lead librarians to adopt open source tools and become more engaged with open source developers and their projects. Instead, there is a significant gap between the potential of open source and the adoption of these tools in libraries. The authors address the causes and potential consequences, and suggest strategies that can be adopted by advocates for open source in libraries.

The Cost Of Negative Perceptions Of The Work Environment Among Intermediate Intensive Care Unit Nurses, Joselyn Peralta Dec 2006

The Cost Of Negative Perceptions Of The Work Environment Among Intermediate Intensive Care Unit Nurses, Joselyn Peralta

Master's Projects

This descriptive study assessed the perceptions of the work environment and the retention plans among registered nurses (RNs) who worked in the Intermediate Intensive Care Unit at a tertiary university hospital. Results from the Moos Work Environment Scale found that nurses perceived high levels of work pressure and low levels of clarity, coworker cohesion, and supervisor support. Results indicated that the intent to leave the unit was dependent on the nurses having other options in nursing, desiring further education, an undesirable scheduling process and unsafe patient care. The direct and indirect costs to hospitals could be offset by developing strategies …

Technological Change, Universal Access, And The End Of The Library, Wayne Bivens-Tatum Oct 2006

Technological Change, Universal Access, And The End Of The Library, Wayne Bivens-Tatum

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Library and Information Science (LIS) does not lend itself to philosophizing. Political philosophy offers a useful and necessary approach to thinking about libraries. Teleological thinking helps bring into relief some of the problems and issues of library and information science. When we do not address political problems teleologically, we may confuse means and ends, and ignore ends altogether. As an example of a teleological investigation, the author considers a proposition that some take to be the end of the library, the proposition that libraries should provide free access to all information to all persons all of the time. Should libraries …

Multigenerational Nurses' Perceptions Of Their Work Environment, Rukhsana Syed May 2006

Multigenerational Nurses' Perceptions Of Their Work Environment, Rukhsana Syed

Master's Projects

Objective: To examine the differences in multi-generational nurses' perceptions regarding their work environment. Background: Today's nursing workforce is comprised of individuals of many generations. Individuals of different generations share some values and beliefs, but they also vary in their perceptions regarding their work environments. It is a challenge for managers to create environments in which all staff members feel welcome and appreciated, a situation. which ultimately leads to decreased turnover, increased productivity, and a high quality of patient care. Methods: Survey packets (n = 850) were distributed to all RNs employed at an acute care hospital. To assess RNs' perceptions …

Information Society: European Considerations In Economic And Cultural Contexts, George Adam Holland Apr 2006

Information Society: European Considerations In Economic And Cultural Contexts, George Adam Holland

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The phrase "information society" is used across many disciplines, yet consensus on its meaning and significance is lacking. This paper explores possible meanings, with particular emphasis on economic and cultural factors. Frank Webster and Manuel Castells inform the discussion through their theoretical and empirical research on the topic. The European engagement development of information societies is analyzed with particular emphasis on Finland. Following this economic and cultural exploration of the information society, methodological implications are identified for research into information societies and consideration for information professionals.

‘Flex Your Power’: Energy Crises And The Shifting Rhetoric Of The Grid, Anne Marie Todd, A. Wood Jan 2006

‘Flex Your Power’: Energy Crises And The Shifting Rhetoric Of The Grid, Anne Marie Todd, A. Wood

Faculty Publications

In response to widespread power outages, rolling blackouts, and ubiquitous energy debates, this essay considers our relation to energy and the grid that produces it. First, we investigate California's multimedia Flex Your Power campaign, which defines consumers as nodes of the grid to emphasize their responsibility to maintain a stable energy supply. Second, we examine state and national responses to the 2003 blackout in the Northeastern United States, attending to three strategies through which grid administrators sought to impose order, enact hierarchy, and deindividuate power. We propose that the grid invokes personalization at the "local" level and abstraction at the …

Faculty Publications

In a companion paper [Niederman et al., 2006] we presented a multi-level research agenda for studying information systems using open source software. This paper examines open source in terms of MIS and referent discipline theories that are the base needed for rigorous study of the research agenda.

To achieve these ends, the overall …

An Exploratory Study Into Open Source Platform Adoption, Jason Dedrick, Joel West Jan 2004

An Exploratory Study Into Open Source Platform Adoption, Jason Dedrick, Joel West

Faculty Publications, School of Management

Research on open source software has focused mainly on the motivations of open source programmers and the organization of open source projects (Kogut and Metiu, 2001 and Lerner and Tirole, 2002). Some researchers portray open source as an extension of the earlier open systems movement (West and Dedrick, 2001). While there has been some research on open-systems software adoption by corporate MIS organizations (Chau and Tam, 1997) the issue of open source adoption has received little attention. We use a series of interviews with MIS managers to develop a grounded theory of open source platform adoption. We contrast this to …

Saving City Lifelines: Lessons Learned In The 9-11 Terrorist Attacks, Mti Report 02-06, Brian M. Jenkins Sep 2003

Saving City Lifelines: Lessons Learned In The 9-11 Terrorist Attacks, Mti Report 02-06, Brian M. Jenkins

Mineta Transportation Institute

This case study of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks examines how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, New York City Transit, Port Authority, and other transit systems responded to the events of 9-11, and how the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) worked to coordinate response and recovery operations; it also seeks to identify those lessons that can be captured before participants rotate or retire, memories dim, and what was learned is lost. The scope is limited to the evaluation of transit response, not other surface transportation elements such as bridges and tunnels, which seemed to function quite well and could be …

Issues Related To The Emergence Of The Information Superhighway And California Societal Changes, Iistps Report 96-4, Jan L. Botha, Roger Salstrom, R. Benjamin Knapp

Mineta Transportation Institute

The Norman Y. Mineta International Institute for Surface Transportation Policy Studies (IISTPS) at San José State University (SJSU) conducted this project to review the continuing development of the Internet and the Information Superhighway. Emphasis was placed on an examination of the impact on commuting and working patterns in California, and an analysis of how public transportation agencies, including Caltrans, might take advantage of the new communications technologies. The document reviews the technology underlying the current Internet “structure” and examines anticipated developments. It is important to note that much of the research for this limited-scope project was conducted during 1995, and …
