A Spatial Optimization Model For Resource Allocation For Wildfire Suppression And Resident Evacuation, Siqiong Zhou
A Spatial Optimization Model For Resource Allocation For Wildfire Suppression And Resident Evacuation, Siqiong Zhou
Master's Theses
Wildland-urban interface wildfires have been a significant threat in many countries. This thesis presents an integer two-stage stochastic goal programming model for comprehensive, efficient response to wildfire including firefighting resource allocation and resident evacuation. In contrast to other natural disasters, the progression of wildfires depends on not only the probabilistic fire spread scenarios but also decisions made during firefighting. The proposed model optimizes the resource preparations before the fire starts and resource allocation decisions during the fire event. This model takes into account different wildfire spread scenarios and their impact on high-risk areas. The two objectives considered are minimizing the …
Pedagogies Of Play: An Ethnographic Analysis Of Activity-Based Learning In Two Elementary Classrooms, Chelsea Lynn Halliwell
Pedagogies Of Play: An Ethnographic Analysis Of Activity-Based Learning In Two Elementary Classrooms, Chelsea Lynn Halliwell
Master's Theses
In this document I discuss the relationship between education standards for curriculum and structured play in the elementary classroom. I discuss the various forms of teacher-initiated structured play, and student-initiated informal play and resistance strategies - through participant observation, digital analysis, spatial analysis, semi-structured ethnographic interviews, and unstructured conversations - to understand the full range of learning strategies in elementary classroom settings. I analyze how these strategies relate to curricular standards, or how they might deviate from or transform those standards, which are partially shaped by federal and state education policy. I also outline and develop two hypotheses in an …

Superintendent Beliefs About The Assessment And Use Of School Climate Data For Continuous Improvement, Anji Buckner-Capone
Dissertations
Academic outcomes and health outcomes are interconnected and reciprocal and school climate has emerged as a way to capture some of this relationship. An increasing trend in education policy is using multiple measures of school success, including school climate, such as California’s Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). As school climate evolves as a critical component in state accountability there is a need to better understand the role of leaders in facilitating the implementation processes for school climate assessment accountabilities, including their beliefs and their practices. This mixed methods study explored the practices and beliefs of California Superintendents in their efforts …
Numerical Linked-Cluster Expansions For Disordered Lattice Models, M. D. Mulanix, Demetrius Almada, Ehsan Khatami
Numerical Linked-Cluster Expansions For Disordered Lattice Models, M. D. Mulanix, Demetrius Almada, Ehsan Khatami
Faculty Publications
Imperfections in correlated materials can alter their ground state as well as finite-temperature properties in significant ways. Here, we develop a method based on numerical linked-cluster expansions for calculating exact finite-temperature properties of disordered lattice models directly in the thermodynamic limit. We show that a continuous distribution for disordered parameters can be achieved using a set of carefully chosen discrete modes in the distribution, which allows for the averaging of properties over all disorder realizations. We benchmark our results for thermodynamic properties of the square-lattice Ising and quantum Heisenberg models with bond disorder against Monte Carlo simulations and study them …
Classification Of Hyperspectral Colon Cancer Images Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Sean Joseph Mobilia
Classification Of Hyperspectral Colon Cancer Images Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Sean Joseph Mobilia
Master's Theses
Hyperspectral images are 3-D images, which contain data in hundreds of spectral bands as opposed to 2-D images, which contain data in at most 3 bands (red, green, and blue). Hyperspectral imagery was initially developed for remote sensing; however, recently, researchers have started to see its potential in medical diagnosis and cancer detection. Hyperspectral images provide massive amounts of data about the objects they are studying, and this causes challenges during information processing. Machine learning tools, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), are known to be successful in extracting features and classifying traditional 2-D images. This thesis proposes CNN architectures …
Investigations And Analysis Of Dynamical And Steady State Properties Of Chemical Reaction Systems, Diego Ortega Hernandez
Investigations And Analysis Of Dynamical And Steady State Properties Of Chemical Reaction Systems, Diego Ortega Hernandez
Master's Theses
In this paper, we investigate results from chemical reaction network theory and a list of techniques to test for the reaction-coordinates dynamical system to have a partial order induced by a positive orthant cone. A successful result from one of these tests guarantees mono-stationarity (and indeed convergence). We also investigate a recently published algorithmic and computational approach to determine whether a reaction network establishes mono- or multi-stationarity. We test new reactions that have not been previously introduced in the literature for mono- or multi-stationarity using this approach. This includes the two-site phosphorylation reaction network and a modified double phosphorylation reaction …
Combining Blockchain And Swarm Robotics To Deploy Surveillance Missions, Ardalan Razavi
Combining Blockchain And Swarm Robotics To Deploy Surveillance Missions, Ardalan Razavi
Master's Theses
Current swarm robotics systems are not utilized as frequently in surveillance missions due to the limitations of the existing distributed systems' designs. The main limitation of swarm robotics is the absence of a framework for robots to be self-governing, secure, and scalable. As of today, a swarm of robots is not able to communicate and perform tasks in transparent and autonomous ways. Many believe blockchain is the imminent future of distributed autonomous systems. A blockchain is a system of computers that stores and distributes data among all participants. Every single participant is a validator and protector of the data in …
Zero And Low Energy Thresholds In Quantum Simulation, Yun Xuan Shi
Zero And Low Energy Thresholds In Quantum Simulation, Yun Xuan Shi
Master's Theses
Quantum simulation is the process of simulating a quantum mechanical system using either a quantum or a classical computer. Because quantum mechanical systems contain a large number of entangled particles, they are hard to simulate on a classical computer. It is the task of computational complexity theorists to estimate the amount of resources to do the same number of operations on either classical or quantum devices. This report first summarizes the state of the art in the field of quantum computing, and gives an example of a model of quantum computer and examples of quantum algorithms that are currently being …

Distribution Of Bit Patterns In Binary Sequence Generated Over Sub Extension Field, Md. Arshad Ali, Yuta Kodera, Yasuyuki Nogami, Satoshi Uehara, Robert Morelos-Zaragoza
Faculty Publications
The distribution of bit patterns is an important measure to check the randomness of a sequence. The authors of this paper observed this crucial property in a binary sequence which generated by using a primitive polynomial, trace function, and Legendre symbol defined over the sub extension field. The authors create a new dimension in the sequence generation research area by considering the sub extension field, whereas all our previous works are focused in the prime field. In terms of the distribution of bit patterns property, this research work has notable outcomes more specifically the binary sequence (defined over the sub …

Most social networks of today are populated with several millions of active users, while the most popular of them accommodate way more than one billion. Analyzing such huge complex networks has become particularly demanding in computational terms. A task of paramount importance for understanding the structure of social networks as well as of many other real-world systems is to identify communities, that is, sets of nodes that are more densely connected to each other than to other nodes of the network. In this paper we propose two algorithms for community detection in networks, by employing the neighborhood overlap metric …

Induced Quantum Dot Probe For Material Characterization, Yun-Pil Shim, Rusko Ruskov, Hilary M. Hurst, Charles Tahan
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
We propose a non-destructive means of characterizing a semiconductor wafer via measuring parameters of an induced quantum dot on the material system of interest with a separate probe chip that can also house the measurement circuitry. We show that a single wire can create the dot, determine if an electron is present, and be used to measure critical device parameters. Adding more wires enables more complicated (potentially multi-dot) systems and measurements. As one application for this concept we consider silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor and silicon/silicon-germanium quantum dot qubits relevant to quantum computing and show how to measure low-lying excited states (so-called "valley" …
