Relative Impacts Of Different Grade Scales On Student Success In Introductory Physics, David J. Webb, Cassandra A. Paul, Mary A. Chessey

Faculty Publications

In deciding on a student’s grade in a class, an instructor generally needs to combine many individual grading judgments into one overall judgment. Two relatively common numerical scales used to specify individual grades are the 4-point scale (where each whole number 0–4 corresponds to a letter grade) and the percent scale (where letter grades A through D are uniformly distributed in the top 40% of the scale). This paper uses grading data from a single series of courses offered over a period of 10 years to show that the grade distributions emerging from these two grade scales differed in many …

Machine Learning Discovery Of Computational Model Efficacy Boundaries, Michael S. Murillo, Mathieu Marciante, Liam G. Stanton Aug 2020

Machine Learning Discovery Of Computational Model Efficacy Boundaries, Michael S. Murillo, Mathieu Marciante, Liam G. Stanton

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Computational models are formulated in hierarchies of variable fidelity, often with no quantitative rule for defining the fidelity boundaries. We have constructed a dataset from a wide range of atomistic computational models to reveal the accuracy boundary between higher-fidelity models and a simple, lower-fidelity model. The symbolic decision boundary is discovered by optimizing a support vector machine on the data through iterative feature engineering. This data-driven approach reveals two important results: (i) a symbolic rule emerges that is independent of the algorithm, and (ii) the symbolic rule provides a deeper understanding of the fidelity boundary. Specifically, our dataset is composed …

Forensic Autosomal Short Tandem Repeats And Their Potential Association With Phenotype, Nicole Wyner, Mark Barash, Dennis Mcnevin

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Forensic DNA profiling utilizes autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) markers to establish identity of missing persons, confirm familial relations, and link persons of interest to crime scenes. It is a widely accepted notion that genetic markers used in forensic applications are not predictive of phenotype. At present, there has been no demonstration of forensic STR variants directly causing or predicting disease. Such a demonstration would have many legal and ethical implications. For example, is there a duty to inform a DNA donor if a medical condition is discovered during routine analysis of their sample? In this review, we evaluate the …

Don’T Be So Fast With The Knife: A Reply To Kapsner, Graham Priest

Comparative Philosophy

The is a brief reply to the central objection against the construction of my The Fifth Corner of Four by Andi Kapsner in his “Cutting Corners: A Critical Note on Priest’s Five-Valued Catuṣkoṭi. This concerns the desirability of adding a fifth corner (ineffability) to the four of the catuṣkoṭi.

Cutting Corners: A Critical Note On Priest’S Five-Valued Catuṣkoṭi, Andreas Kapsner Jul 2020

Cutting Corners: A Critical Note On Priest’S Five-Valued Catuṣkoṭi, Andreas Kapsner

Comparative Philosophy

Graham Priest has offered a rational reconstruction of Buddhist thought that involves, first, modeling the Catuṣkoṭi by a four valued logic, and then later adding a fifth value, read as “ineffability”. This note examines that fifth value and raises some concerns about it that seem grave enough to reject it. It then sketches an alternative to Priest’s account that has no need for the fifth value.

Izutsu’S Zen Metaphysics Of I-Consciousness Vis-À-Vis Cartesian Cogito, Takaharu Oda, Alessio Bucci Jul 2020

Izutsu’S Zen Metaphysics Of I-Consciousness Vis-À-Vis Cartesian Cogito, Takaharu Oda, Alessio Bucci

Comparative Philosophy

Chief amongst the issues Toshihiko Izutsu broached is the philosophisation of Zen Buddhism in his book Toward a Philosophy of Zen Buddhism. This article aims to critically compare Izutsu’s reconstruction of Zen metaphysics with another metaphysical tradition rooted in Descartes’ cogito ergo sum. Putting Izutsu’s terminological choices into the context of Zen Buddhism, we review his argument based on the subject-object distinction and establish a comparison with the Cartesian cogito. A critical analysis is conducted on the functional relationship between subject and object in Izutsu’s metaphysics of Zen (meditation). This is examined step by step from the perspective of …

A Russellian Analysis Of Buddhist Catuskoti, Nicholaos Jones Jul 2020

A Russellian Analysis Of Buddhist Catuskoti, Nicholaos Jones

Comparative Philosophy

Names name, but there are no individuals who are named by names. This is the key to an elegant and ideologically parsimonious strategy for analyzing the Buddhist catuṣkoṭi. The strategy is ideologically parsimonious, because it appeals to no analytic resources beyond those of standard predicate logic. The strategy is elegant, because it is, in effect, an application of Bertrand Russell's theory of definite descriptions to Buddhist contexts. The strategy imposes some minor adjustments upon Russell's theory. Attention to familiar catuṣkoṭi from Vacchagotta and Nagarjuna as well as more obscure catuṣkoṭi from Khema, Zhi Yi, and Fa Zang motivates the …

We show that for any positive integer n, there is some fixed A such that d(x) = d(x +n) = A infinitely often where d(x) denotes the number of divisors of x. In fact, we establish the stronger result that both x and x +n have the same fixed exponent pattern for infinitely many x. Here the exponent pattern of an integer x > 1is the multiset of nonzero exponents which appear in the prime factorization of x.
