With Liberty And Justice For Some: How Felony Disenfranchisement Undermines American Democracy, Kiley Staufenbeil

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

This paper examines the damaging effects of felony disenfranchisement on American democracy. The premise of American democracy is to include citizens in government processes, thus, felony disenfranchisement is inherently anti-democratic. The first section analyzes the historical timeline of the origins and prominence of felony disenfranchisement dating back to Ancient Greece. The paper considers the legal standing of felony disenfranchisement by examining relevant court cases, such as Richardson v. Ramirez (1974). Following this, a case study of the states that practice distinct levels of felony disenfranchisement, ranging from the most punitive states to the most permissive, is presented. The paper then …

Age-related episodic memory decline is characterized by striking heterogeneity across individuals. Hippocampal pattern completion is a fundamental process supporting episodic memory. Yet, the degree to which this mechanism is impaired with age, and contributes to variability in episodic memory, remains unclear. We combine univariate and multivariate analyses of fMRI data from a large cohort of cognitively normal older adults (N=100) to measure hippocampal activity and cortical reinstatement during retrieval of trial-unique associations. Trial-wise analyses revealed that (a) hippocampal activity scaled with reinstatement strength, (b) cortical reinstatement partially mediated the relationship between hippocampal activity and associative retrieval, (c) older age weakened …

Indian Contribution On Antibiotic Resistance: A Bibliometric Mapping And Visualization, Mahender Pratap Singh, Vijay Kumar Bharati

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Background: Antibiotic is a medicine that gradually reduces the effect of the bacteria available in our body and kills it, but if antibiotics are used continuously, the mutation in bacteria creates a resistance to it, which is called antibiotic resistance, and if antibiotic resistance has occurred then these antibiotics cannot kill the bacteria and patient may die. Objectives: Antibiotic medicine is closely related to human life and day by day antibiotic resistance increasing, so there is a need to count the research productivity of Indian scientists on AR. This study was undertaken to examine the research productivity of the literature …

Exercising Caution Upon Waking–Can Exercise Reduce Sleep Inertia?, Katya Kovac, Sally A. Ferguson, Jessica L. Paterson, Brad Aisbett, Cassie J. Hilditch, Amy C. Reynolds, Grace E. Vincent

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Sleep inertia, the transitional state of reduced alertness and impaired cognitive performance upon waking, is a safety risk for on-call personnel who can be required to perform critical tasks soon after waking. Sleep inertia countermeasures have previously been investigated; however, none have successfully dissipated sleep inertia within the first 15 min following waking. During this time, on-call personnel could already be driving, providing advice, or performing other safety-critical tasks. Exercise has not yet been investigated as a sleep inertia countermeasure but has the potential to stimulate the key physiological mechanisms that occur upon waking, including changes in cerebral blood flow, …
