Invisible Harm: Verbal Sexual Coercion Among College Students, Char Chezanne
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
This paper provides a review of literature and research on verbal sexual coercion on college campuses by focusing on heterosexual dynamics. The studies involved explore the factors that influence sexually coercive behavior, including parenting styles, heteronormative beliefs, and risk-taking behaviors. Furthermore, this paper reviews current informal and formal responses to campus sexual coercion by focusing on the overlooked power dynamics that influence sexual consent. This paper concludes that restorative justice serves as an alternative to traditional justice for campus-based sexual coercion because of its flexibility and applicability to nuanced sexual assault cases.
Gun Control In America: A Global Comparison, Lee Spieller
Gun Control In America: A Global Comparison, Lee Spieller
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
The United States has a high number of gun-related deaths compared to the rest of the world. Many approaches attempt to help mitigate these deaths, but few have proven ultimately successful on a national level. The purpose of this paper is to establish the need for gun reform by determining the relationship between guns and fatalities and covers how the US and foreign countries approach gun control. More specifically, this paper will examine each of the different approaches: firearm access restrictions, licensing restrictions, carry restrictions, and issuing parameters for concealed weapon permits. This examination will include firearm homicide rates as …
Willingess To Use Telehealth For Diabetes Management In The Rural Healthcare Setting, Andrew Kim
Willingess To Use Telehealth For Diabetes Management In The Rural Healthcare Setting, Andrew Kim
Doctoral Projects
Diabetes is a disease that has far reaching physically and financially consequences. This disease has shown to increase morbidity and mortality, along with increasing overall healthcare costs. Optimal management of diabetes may require a multidisciplinary approach across the span of multiple encounters with the diabetic patient. Considering the nature of diabetes, integration of telehealth has the opportunity to improve diabetes management by improving healthcare outcomes, along with potential cost savings. However, the use of novel technology like telehealth is only as useful if patients are willing to use it. Thus, this survey aimed to determining whether patients within a rural …

Educational Games: A Basic Understanding And Effective Uses, Kaitlin Kirkman
ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies
Since the invention of video games, many people would perceive these digital games as just entertainment. Increasingly there has been a shift into taking video games and turning them into educational programs to help people learn. In this paper, I discuss the different forms of educational games which are serious games, it’s subcategory serious educational games, and educational simulations. I compare and contrast the differences as well as provide examples. I also discuss effective ways to use educational games so that they can be more understood as an effective method for teaching. The concepts I discuss about effective educational games …
The Problematic Nature Of Execution By Lethal Injection In The United States And People’S Republic Of China, Franchesca Fanucchi
The Problematic Nature Of Execution By Lethal Injection In The United States And People’S Republic Of China, Franchesca Fanucchi
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
The United States and the People’s Republic of China perceive the death penalty as a fundamental feature of the criminal justice system. Lethal injection procedures provide these countries with the humane disguise necessary to preserve capital punishment in an environment of evolving societal standards. However, this essay examines the highly problematic nature of execution by lethal injection due to numerous medical, procedural, and bureaucratic concerns often concealed from the public and press. The low-visibility nature of lethal injection in the United States and China has become troublesome, especially since it prevents public, academic, and medical evaluation on the procedure's humaneness …
Evaluating The Clinical Impact Of Providing Home Blood Pressure Monitors To Patients With Elevated Or High Blood Pressure, Theresa La Guardia Asmus
Evaluating The Clinical Impact Of Providing Home Blood Pressure Monitors To Patients With Elevated Or High Blood Pressure, Theresa La Guardia Asmus
Doctoral Projects
Many clinicians continue to diagnose hypertension based on office-based readings, despite the 2015 United States Preventive Services Task Force recommendation for the use of home or ambulatory blood pressure monitoring to confirm the diagnosis of hypertension prior to initiating treatment. Without obtaining blood pressure readings outside of the clinic environment, it is impossible to correctly diagnose hypertension, particularly regarding masked hypertension and white coat hypertension.
Stanford Health Care implemented a quality improvement project that provided patients with a home blood pressure device to monitor out of clinic blood pressure readings. The purpose of the project was to improve clinical care …
Nurse Practitioners’ Perceptions Of Telehealth Behaviors, Michelle Austin
Nurse Practitioners’ Perceptions Of Telehealth Behaviors, Michelle Austin
Doctoral Projects
Problem: NP’s must be proficient in the behaviors that are required for a successful patient encounter to provide the full benefit of nurse practitioner (NP) telehealth. Consequently, it is imperative for NPs to understand telehealth etiquette behaviors which include the technical and non-technical skills that are necessary for an effective NP-patient patient telehealth encounter (Haney, Kott & Fowler, 2015). Telehealth has been incorporated into healthcare delivery and its use is expanding. In the United States, it is predicted to be used by seven million patients in 2020 (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2018). Appropriate access to health care …
Creating Accessory Dwelling Units (Adus) During The California Housing Shortage: Benchmarking Adu Programs Within Selected Bay Area City And County Jurisdictions Against The City Of The Santa Cruz And The County Of Santa Cruz, Ivo Niko Basor
Master's Projects
The State of California is currently in a housing crisis, which many researchers believe stems from a foundational issue with the supply and demand for housing (Tanner, Garcia, Buhayar, 2019). More specifically, California has seen a steady population increase for several decades; however, the growing demand for housing has not kept up with supply. The influx of new people coming to California, and birth rates exceeding death rates, have been defining factors in the growing demand for housing (Public Policy Institute of California, 2018). As high paying jobs are created and bring in top wage earners, and the cost of …
Improving Indigent Defense: An Evaluation Of Program Effectiveness For The California Defense Investigators Association’S Defense Investigator Training Academy, Sheree Martinek
Master's Projects
Training is a crucial component of investigation work; however, there is a significant discrepancy regarding the training mandated and received by prosecution-oriented and defense-oriented investigators. Prosecution investigators (such as law enforcement detectives or District Attorney investigators) have considerable resources and require extensive training aside from one’s education. In respect to training, investigators who work for the prosecution are required to complete the California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). Completion of POST is a minimum of 664 hours of training (POST, 2020). However, there is no mandatory training program, academy, or number of cumulative training hours required for an investigator …

California’S Proposition 47: The Safe Neighborhoods And Schools Act, Edith Garcia Fong
California’S Proposition 47: The Safe Neighborhoods And Schools Act, Edith Garcia Fong
Master's Projects
Proposition 47 made drastic changes to California’s criminal justice system. Critics and proponents of the measure have made sweeping claims about its impact on crime trends and the criminal justice system, in general. However, many of these claims are based on assumptions and are not based on actual data and research. Given the fact that California’s prison population is still subject to court oversight, it is essential that the effectiveness of Proposition 47 as a solution to this issue be evaluated. If the state hopes to maintain compliance with the court-mandated prison population caps, it must ensure to exhaust all …

Sustainable Cannabis Policy In California: Addressing The Legal Cannabis Industry’S Carbon Footprint, Genevieve Yip
Sustainable Cannabis Policy In California: Addressing The Legal Cannabis Industry’S Carbon Footprint, Genevieve Yip
Master's Projects
As cannabis cultivation can be highly energy-intensive, the legalization of cannabis growing has created concerns for energy forecasting, electric system reliability, rate design, and energy efficiency policies, as well as possible ramifications for the state’s electricity grid (California Energy Commission, 2018b). Indoor cannabis cultivation in California accounts for 3% of the state’s total energy consumption (Mills, 2012), and as the industry continues to grow, its energy consumption will result in significant greenhouse gas emissions, unless otherwise mitigated (Warren, 2015). The addition of a new industry that is highly energy-intensive, such as the legalized cannabis industry, is a problem for California. …

This research will evaluate what effect additional CVRP rebates provided to low-income consumers have on their adoptions of ZEVs. The purpose of this research is to determine whether the CVRP rebates are making it feasible and compelling enough for low-income consumers to adopt ZEVs at a rate that will lead to California meeting its greenhouse gas reduction goals.
Operational Procedures For Releasing Police Records: A Process Evaluation Of California Law Enforcement Agencies’ Implementation Of Senate Bill 1421, Bianca Madrid
Master's Projects
This research intends to explain how law enforcement agencies in California have implemented operational procedures to comply with the CPRA pursuant to SB 1421 requirements. Because SB 1421 vastly expanded the CPRA, demand for law enforcement record requests has significantly increased in volume. Also, due to key components of SB 1421 which lack clarity in defining specific terminology, each law enforcement agency had to develop its own interpretation of how to implement requirements set forth by the statute. Law enforcement agencies have implemented new requirements to reflect the changes in SB 1421 by establishing working protocols for compliance, developing standard …

Cost Effectiveness And Hospitalization Rates Of Those With Mental Health Issues Using On-Site Versus Off-Site Job Coaching, Jerry Dattilo
Cost Effectiveness And Hospitalization Rates Of Those With Mental Health Issues Using On-Site Versus Off-Site Job Coaching, Jerry Dattilo
Master's Projects
The State of California’s Department of Rehabilitation has established a goal of reducing the rate of unemployment for people suffering from mental illness (Department of Rehabilitation, 2020). Sheltered workshops and short duration employment efforts have proven to be less effective than the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) or other supported employment models. Provided that they have the right support and strategies, those suffering from mental illness can maintain competitive employment and reduce their incidences of hospitalization, dependency, boredom, and lack of fulfillment. The alienation one suffers from lack of social connection and employment cannot be understated. Participants in supported employment …

Patient-Centered Emr Communication, Christi Lynn Camarena
Doctoral Projects
The electronic medical record (EMR) has become the standard in health care documentation. The EMR has been shown to improve the availability of medical records, provide tools to facilitate communication, and improve patient safety. Because of the absence of standardized training and EMR research, there is a gap in understanding the relationship between the EMR and the provider-patient relationship. The EMR requires the provider to use purposeful and deliberate patient-centered EMR communications behaviors to facilitate a meaningful, engaging, and educational dialogue with patients. These behaviors have been studied in physician populations and standardized tools have been developed to assist in …

Respiratory Distress Observation Scale Implementation For Comfort Care Patients In The Acute Care Setting, Marianne Wachalovsky
Doctoral Projects
One of the most common symptoms at the end of life is respiratory distress. Respiratory distress or dyspnea is a subjective symptom and therefore challenging to assess, especially when the patient is unable to communicate. Controlling symptoms depend on the knowledge and assessment skills of the clinicians and their willingness to administer the necessary pharmacological intervention. Assessment and treatment of this symptom presented a gap in the quality of care for the patients in the hospital of the author. An exhaustive literature review established that this existed also in other clinical settings and led to the Respiratory Distress Observation Scale …
