Options For Low-Cost Manufacturing And Safer Cell Therapies, Melis Keceli
Master's Theses
The proposed work aims to overcome the economical and feasibility-related limitations of the chimeric antigen receptor therapies by developing an artificial cell signaling pathway whose design transforms K562 cells into in vivo living vectors to synthesize therapeutic proteins upon engaging diseased cells in the treatment of ovarian cancer. There are various advantages of using K562 cells throughout this process. First, Food and Drug Administration approves the reinfusion of K562 cells into patients’ bodies. Second, K562 cells are more affordable than T lymphocytes, and finally, these cells can be easily manipulated with any desired genetic material and can keep the expression …

Cyberbullying detection is one of the trending topics of research in recent years, due to the popularity of social media and the lack of limitations about using electronic communications. Detection of cyberbullying may prevent some bullying behaviors online. This paper introduced a Multimodal system that makes use of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Tensor Fusion Network, VGG-19 Network, and Multi-Layer Perceptron model, for the purpose of cyberbullying detection. This system can not only analyze the messages sent but also the extra information related to the messages (meta-information) and the images contained in the messages. The proposed system was trained and tested …

This study attempts to fill an essential knowledge gap on the information needs of the mathematicians in Sri Lankan universities. As the indispensability of the teaching and research of the university mathematicians towards all the other disciplines and various sectors of the country is widely understood, it is essential for the university libraries to methodically learn the characteristics of their information requirements for their academic endeavours. However, the unavailability of any such research output on the mathematicians of Sri Lanka led to this study with the objectives of examining the purposes of information, frequency of information seeking and the factors …

School and district leaders work in stressful jobs and a better understanding is needed about how these conditions affect their personal and professional lives. This study presents the stories of experienced K–12 public school and district administrators contending with and managing administrative stress and its effects on administrators. Through qualitative inquiry and narrative analysis, the learning that comes from experience is explored as a way of understanding administrative practice. Storied examples of stressful situations range from the most serious and traumatic events a school administrator might face to the daily grind of always being “on.” Powerful themes that emerged from …

Public school site administrators face enormous challenges day in and day out. COVID-19 has created more challenges than ever for any organization, but for public school site administrators these types of challenges are once in a lifetime. When crisis hits, leaders are expected to be strong and levelheaded. However, these leaders are experiencing high levels of stress which can lead to burnout, depersonalization, or worse. Using a quantitative method, the study was done to better understand the stress public school site administrators are under. Public school administrators in Silicon Valley were surveyed using the Administrator Stress Index, which is the …

Contextualized within the popularity of new media, youth engagement is a very important concept in the practice of public involvement. Guided by the current literature on youth engagement and media studies, this chapter examines the key engagement-related notions involving youth and media usage. Being informed by a variety of case studies on youth engagement through the use of media within various contexts globally, the chapter discusses the opportunities and challenges of engaging youth through media involvement. The specific notions covered in this chapter include (1) the role of “hybrid” media in youth engagement, (2) “intersectionality” illustrating the diversity of youth …

Building Pillars Where Bridges Are Easy To Imitate - Mediating Technologies In Knowledge-Based Economies, Guido Fioretti, Stephen K. Kwan, Stefania Niciforo
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
We carried out a qualitative investigation of a pioneer of the Industrial Internet of Things operating in Silicon Valley since 1989. We reconstructed a sequence of strategic turns and conceptualized their current business model in a way that is relevant for several other industries enabled by the Internet, generalizing Thompson’s concept of mediating technologies in order to adapt it to contemporary, knowledge-based economies. We propose an interpretive framework for mediating technologies that we express by means of semantic networks.

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Prior work exploring preschool-aged children’s reasoning with repeating patterns has shown that patterning ability is an important predictor of math achievement; however, there is limited research exploring older children’s growing pattern task performance. The current study tested whether presentation format impacts performance on growing pattern problems, and whether the effects of presentation format extend to transfer word problems for which no patterns are provided. Sixth grade students were randomly assigned to complete several growing pattern tasks in one of three presentation formats (figures, sequences of values, or tables of values), and later completed transfer story problems with no figures, sequences, …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In recent years, there has been a florescence of cross-cultural research using ethnographic and qualitative data. This cutting-edge work confronts a range of significant methodological challenges, but has not yet addressed how thematic analysis can be modified for use in cross-cultural ethnography. Thematic analysis is widely used in qualitative and mixed-methods research, yet is not currently well-adapted to cross-cultural ethnographic designs. We build on existing thematic analysis techniques to discuss a method to inductively identify metathemes (defined here as themes that occur across cultures). Identifying metathemes in cross-cultural research is important because metathemes enable researchers to use systematic comparisons to …

Numerical Investigations Of Transient Wind Shear From Passing Vehicles Near A Road Structure (Part I: Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Simulations), Hamid Rahai, Assma Begum
Mineta Transportation Institute
In this research, the authors performed unsteady numerical simulations of a moving Ahmed body under a freeway overpass at different distances from the bridge columns in order to evaluate transient wind shear and the wind load on these columns. Results have shown that when the vehicle is at 0.75W distance from the bridge columns, an unsteady wind speed of up to 24 m/s is observed at the columns with a pressure coefficient difference of 0.9. Here W is the width of the vehicle. These results indicate with an appropriate system for harnessing these wind energy potentials, significant renewable electric power …
