After years of advocacy and international negotiation, the General Assembly of the United Nations voted to officially recognize a stand-alone human right to water and sanitation on 28 July 2010. Since, academic scholarship has continued to grow in an effort to understand the implications of the codification of this human right. Yet, with this growth, it has become impractical if not impossible for scholars to keep up with the advancement of academic knowledge or to make sense of it in a systematic way. In short, to date, we know very little about the trends in the literature as they have …

Background: Transcriptomic data has demonstrated utility to advance the study of physiological diversity and organisms’ responses to environmental stressors. However, a lack of genomic resources and challenges associated with collecting high-quality RNA can limit its application for many wild populations. Minimally invasive blood sampling combined with de novo transcriptomic approaches has great potential to alleviate these barriers. Here, we advance these goals for marine turtles by generating high quality de novo blood transcriptome assemblies to characterize functional diversity and compare global transcriptional profiles between tissues, species, and foraging aggregations. Results: We generated high quality blood transcriptome assemblies for hawksbill (Eretmochelys …

Concepts of molecular biology and genetics are difficult for many biology undergraduate students to master yet are crucial for deep understanding of how life works. By asking students to draw their ideas, we attempted to uncover the mental models about genes and gene expression held by biology students (n = 23) and experts (n = 18) using semistructured interviews. A large divide was identified between novice and expert conceptions. While experts typically drew box-and-line representations and thought about genes as regions of DNA that were used to encode products, students typically drew whole chromosomes rather than focusing on gene structure …

Runs of homozygosity (ROH) occur when offspring inherit haplotypes that are identical by descent from each parent. Length distributions of ROH are informative about population history; specifically, the probability of inbreeding mediated by mating system and/or population demography. Here, we investigated whether variation in killer whale (Orcinus orca) demographic history is reflected in genome-wide heterozygosity and ROH length distributions, using a global data set of 26 genomes representative of geographic and ecotypic variation in this species, and two F1 admixed individuals with Pacific-Atlantic parentage. We first reconstructed demographic history for each population as changes in effective population size through time …

Professional athletes play an important role in addressing issues of social justice and promoting critical dialogues in society (Edwards, 2016). While the history of athlete activism can be traced back to the early twentieth century (Moore, 2017), recently athletes have spoken out about social issues that transcend sport (Modiano, 2017; Tredway, 2020). Though scholars have examined what Edwards (2016) has called the “fourth wave of athlete activism,” little is known about how various stakeholders perceive the activities of athlete activists. Specifically, scholars have yet to examine the perceptions of high school athletes regarding athlete activism. Further, little is known about …

Destruction of the religious practices of Indigenous people strikes at the core of their identity and connection to the places they have existed in since time immemorial. Northwestern California saw the world renewal ceremonies of the Tolowas (at the Yontocket in 1853) and the Wiyots (at Tuluwat in 1860) horrifically interrupted by massacres as they prayed for a better world for all humanity. The cultural and spiritual identities of the tribes were nearly erased by settler-colonists intent on destroying people they perceived as less than human and an obstacle in their quest for land acquisition. This chapter approaches the targeting …
