Drifting Towards Users’ Doorsteps: Domesticating Academic Library Services, Grace Arerosuoghene Arerosuoghene Dada Mrs
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Library is the heartbeat of research and development in the educational sector. However, since the digital transformation, library patronage had swayed like a pendulum creating gaps in patronage. Expanding (to schools) and extending (to host communities) the tenets of academic librarianship to far reaching ends is imperative to improving library services and increasing patronage. This study attempts to extract from heads of household and librarians, their opinion on domesticating some library services through inclusion of new services for students within and outside the library/school environment, obviously to salvage patronage and contribute to learning performance of students. The survey design was …

A Participatory Archives Approach To Fostering Connectivity, Increasing Empathy, And Building Resilience During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jessica Bushey
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This paper explores two pandemic-era projects conducted by the Museum and Archives of North Vancouver (MONOVA) using a participatory archives framework during the COVID-19 pandemic. #NorthVanStories, a rapid-respond social media collecting project, ran from May to September 2020 and received over 200 submissions. #NorthVanStories–Living Histories, a digital video oral history project, ran from summer 2020 to fall 2021 and produced five videos with seven storytellers from diverse and vulnerable communities. This paper discusses the power of collaborative documenting, storytelling, and memory-making to foster connectivity, increase empathy, and build resilience. It highlights the benefits of working collaboratively with organizations and communities; …

Evaluating Automated Truck Platoon (Atp) Deployment For The Los Angeles–Inland Empire Trade Corridor Enhancement, Shailesh Chandra, Aastha Chaudhary, Prakhar Srivastava, Jose Torres-Aguilera
Mineta Transportation Institute
The California Freight Mobility Plan 2020 lists the Los Angeles-Inland Empire trade corridor region as a prominent industrial hub experiencing an increase in freight flows. The California Freight Mobility Plan also regards automated truck platoon (ATP) as an emerging opportunity to minimize congestion on the trade corridor routes. Percentage change in accessibility from 2022 (“without” ATP) to 2040 (“with” ATP) is calculated for the eighteen industry sectors of the Los Angeles-Inland Empire trade corridor. The application of the accessibility formulation was carried out with data on travel time from I-710 and I-10 within Los Angeles County. The findings suggest that …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Background: Perinatal depression is a significant maternal mental health issue in sub-Saharan Africa. Because of the severe shortage of mental health specialists in this region, healthcare workers can be trained to deliver mental health services. Yet, little research has examined their views about maternal mental health. Aims: To help inform the development of a perinatal depression screening program, the aim of this pilot study was to explore the knowledge and understanding of perinatal depression among healthcare workers in rural Kenya. Methods: Fourteen healthcare workers participated in focus group interviews. Results: Content analysis of interview data yielded three primary themes: 1) …

Declines in eelgrass, an important and widespread coastal habitat, are associated with wasting disease in recent outbreaks on the Pacific coast of North America. This study presents a novel method for mapping and predicting wasting disease using Unoccupied Aerial Vehicle (UAV) with low-altitude autonomous imaging of visible bands. We conducted UAV mapping and sampling in intertidal eelgrass beds across multiple sites in Alaska, British Columbia, and California. We designed and implemented a UAV low-altitude mapping protocol to detect disease prevalence and validated against in situ results. Our analysis revealed that green leaf area index derived from UAV imagery was a …

Exploring Facilitators, Barriers And Concerns Of Police Using Social Media When Investigating Missing Children, Eleanor Howlings, Reka Solymosi
International Journal of Missing Persons
Missing person investigations involve the collection of information to ensure the person is located as fast as possible, minimising their exposure to harms. Social media is a valuable source of information in police investigations both to learn about the missing person, and to appeal for information to the public. To ensure social media is used safely and effectively, we must understand the concerns and experiences of investigating officers. In this pilot study, we analysed interviews from 8 experts who investigate missing children to identify the facilitators and barriers of using social media. We also identified concerns raised by officers around …

Shared Responsibility: Conceptualising How A Public Health Approach May Enhance Police Response To Missing Persons, Katie Gambier-Ross, Joe Apps Dr, Sarah Wayland Dr
International Journal of Missing Persons
When a person is reported missing there are substantial costs for the individual, their family and society. This paper conceptualises the experience of missing persons episodes, through a public health approach. This then allows police, stakeholders and the community to engage in discussions about who is vulnerable to going missing by intervening in a way that addresses risk. Historically, a missing persons episode involves an absence, typically followed by police involvement in consultation with next of kin with establishing the whereabouts of the missing person being the primary focus. Yet, the risk factors of going missing relate more to the …

Pilot Testing For Feasibility Of Role Of Public Libraries In Citizenship Information, Vanita Khanchandani
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper outlines the significance of the pilot study in determining the feasibility of the main study, i.e., the role of the public libraries in citizenship information, and entails pre-testing the measuring tool (questionnaire). In the pilot study, 25 items were assessed on 27 subjects, and internal reliability was determined using Cronbach’s Alpha. The Alpha was found to be 0.78, indicating acceptable consistency of the measuring tool. (questionnaire). This pilot study will be beneficial in determining how to administer the measuring instrument for conducting the actual study and will bring transparency to the research process. The study will embark …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In this chapter, the use of memory by Indigenous activists and movements in North America to unsettle the status quo by bringing attention to a contested past is reviewed to demonstrate how memory activism has become an integral component of the Indigenous rights movement of the twenty-first century. Centered on awaking the memory of settler-colonial society to unsettle the dominant narrative that pervades the understanding of Indigenous peoples as something of the past serves to spark the settler-colonial state's remembrance that Indigenous people are of the present. Acknowledging the past by honoring the promises that were made undermines the historical …
