Patient Acceptance Of Remote Scribing Powered By Google Glass In Outpatient Dermatology: Cross-Sectional Study, Sandra Odenheimer, Deepika Goyal, Veena Jones, Ruth Rosenblum, Lam Ho, Albert Chan

Faculty Publications

Background: The ubiquitous use of electronic health records (EHRs) during medical office visits using a computer monitor and keyboard can be distracting and can disrupt patient-health care provider (HCP) nonverbal eye contact cues, which are integral to effective communication. Provider use of a remote medical scribe with face-mounted technology (FMT), such as Google Glass, may preserve patient-HCP communication dynamics in health care settings by allowing providers to maintain direct eye contact with their patients while still having access to the patient’s relevant EHR information. The medical scribe is able to chart patient encounters in real-time working in an offsite location, …

Faculty Publications, Mechanical Engineering

A personalized and media-rich learning framework called “Knowledge and Curriculum Integration Ecosystem” (KACIE) has been developed and implemented in a junior level fluid mechanics course in Fall 2016 and Spring 2017. This model shares characteristics of blended instruction as well as a flipped classroom, with an overall structure that includes the application of established principles emerging from the learning sciences and from cognitive neuroscience. These principles have taken form in the KACIE model as classroom protocols or written instructions to scaffold and guide teaching and learning by faculty and students respectively. In KACIE, the course has been presented as a …

The indigenous Purépechan people of Mexico have endured a long history of conflict. Throughout their struggles, including those of conquest by the Aztec Empire and the Spanish, and all the historical trauma endured, they have managed to preserve their culture and remain resilient in the face of adversity. By exploring their history, economic system, social and political organization, ideology and religion, we can help preserve what remains of these incredibly strong indigenous people who were among the few indigenous tribes to have resisted the Aztec Empire takeover.

Advancements In Higher Education For Latino(A)/Chicano(A) Doctorates, Karina Chavez

McNair Research Journal SJSU

Latinos(as)/Chicanos(as) are one of the minorities least represented in graduate school (Ramirez, 2016). Although there are few studies that primarily focus on the limitations Latinos(as)/Chicanos(as) students encounter in undergraduate and graduate studies, the overall goal of this study was to focus on the strategies Latinos(as)/Chicanos(as) use to counteract these limitations. These areas of limitations fall into seven categories: educational programs, family support, stress, financial support, mentors, school involvement, and exclusion. A 70-question online survey was administered to those who met the following eligibility requirements: completed a PhD, reside in California, and identify as Latino(a) and/or Chicano(a). Ethnic Identity, Self-Esteem & Intra Group Conflicts Amongst Latinos, Christian Arevalo

McNair Research Journal SJSU

Unlike Salvadorans, Mexican/Mexican Americans have long established communities revolved around their culture. They have advanced in social class, education and political representation. On the other hand, Salvadorans have only just recently begun migrating and settling in predominantly Mexican/Mexican American communities. Competition over resources and the preservation of Mexican/Mexican American culture has caused continuing conflicts among Salvadorans and Mexicans/Mexican Americans. Additionally, inter-ethnic and in-group conflicts are also affected by generational differences (1st, 2nd, 3rd generation, etc.). Due to acculturation, Latinos/as struggle to retain their cultural heritage and parents often lose the ability to influence their children’s ethnic identity (customs, language, social …

Barriers To Providing Quality Care For Pediatric Patients With Autism Spectrum Disorder As Identified By Baccalaureate Prepared Registered Nurses: A Basis To Enhance Professional Practice, Ugo Ndubaku May 2018

Barriers To Providing Quality Care For Pediatric Patients With Autism Spectrum Disorder As Identified By Baccalaureate Prepared Registered Nurses: A Basis To Enhance Professional Practice, Ugo Ndubaku

Doctoral Projects

The increased prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) foretells that this sector of the population will be accessing health care services in greater numbers; thus, it behooves healthcare providers to prepare for their impending needs. This qualitative study describes the experiences of baccalaureate prepared registered nurses caring for children and adolescents with ASD in order to identify challenges that hinder providing comprehensive and individualized care. A purposive sample of 10 baccalaureate degreed registered nurses (RNs) who have worked or work in the pediatric unit was used to gather rich descriptive experiences. The qualitative data analyses were based on an interpretive …

Perceptions Of Caring In The Pediatric Medically Complex Population, Ivette Becerra-Ortiz

Doctoral Projects

In a hospital system that transitioned from a non-caring science model to a professional practice model based on the Theory of Human Caring/Caring Science, it is important to measure the outcomes of the care delivery transition. In a non-experimental, cross-sectional, correlational, quantitative study the aim was to compare a pre/post-Caring Science model implementation at a pediatric and obstetric medical center, by assessing perceptions of caring in the medically complex pediatric population and in the nurses that care for them.

This study used a convenience sample of 102 pediatric families enrolled in a complex care program, and 23 nurses providing care …
