The growing use of electric vehicles (EVs) has created a strong need for smart, data-driven charging management systems that can support large-scale and sustainable infrastructure. This study introduces a modular cloud-based framework that combines artificial intelligence and machine learning to provide predictive insights for energy demand and station expansion. The system mainly consists of two complementary models. The first is an AutoRegressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model that forecasts charging energy demand using transactional data from Palo Alto. The second is a Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) model that predicts optimal charging-station locations using spatial data from the U.S. Department …

The electron and hole surface roughness scattering (SRS)-limited mobilities, deconvolved from 4.2 K measurements, were compared between oxygen-inserted (OI) and control Si channel for n- and pMOSFETs. It was found that electron SRS-limited mobility in the OI-Si channel is 55% higher, whereas hole SRS-limited mobility is comparable to the control. To elucidate the difference, the Si/Si O2 interface roughness and the nanoscale thickness variation of the gate oxide were analyzed in detail, via high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images, and fed into numerical calculation of the SRS-limited mobility. The power spectral densities (PSDs) based on the Yule–Walker autoregressive model revealed that …

Exploring Clinical Ladder Program Participation Among Operating Room Nurses, Camille Sistoso-Lorenzana
Exploring Clinical Ladder Program Participation Among Operating Room Nurses, Camille Sistoso-Lorenzana
Doctoral Projects
Continuous professional development among nurses is vital, yet not all nurses embark on this career journey. The Clinical Ladder Program (CLP) is a retention strategy among various health institutions to retain talent and improve nurses' satisfaction, but this plan is unappealing or indifferent to some nurses. While the CLP is a motivation tool for nurses to focus on clinical expertise in bedside care (Riley et al., 2009), and resources are available to increase a nurse's chances of successfully advancing the ladder, participation in and perspectives on the CLP remain unknown, especially among operating room nurses. This project is guided by …

Introduction – We present the results from the observations of the galaxy NGC 628 with the Planetary Nebulae Spectrograph (PN.S) equipped with the Hα arm. With the third PN.S arm, the Hα arm, we measure the Hα fluxes, in addition to fluxes and line-of-sight velocities (LOSV) of monochromatic, spatially unresolved [OIII] 5007Å sources, in the nearly face-on disc of NGC 628. Methods – The narrow band color ([OIII] 5007Å–Hα) vs m5007 magnitude diagram does separate planetary nebulae (PNe) from single compact ionized HII regions and supernovae remnants (SNRs), which also emit in [OIII]5007 Å. The goals are to detect bona …

Increasing Near-Miss Reporting: An Evidence-Based Approach, Rosalud H. Sanchez-Lozada
Doctoral Projects
Near-miss events, defined as errors intercepted before reaching the patient, offer valuable opportunities for learning and prevention, particularly in high-acuity intensive care units (ICUs). Despite the availability of electronic reporting systems and national emphasis on patient safety, near-miss reporting remains inconsistent in many critical care settings. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project evaluated the impact of a structured educational intervention on near-miss reporting within a cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) at a large academic medical center. A single-group pre–post design was used to examine changes in reporting trends following a three-week intervention that included staff education, leadership …

Introduction: Precisely grading renal cell carcinoma (RCC) through histopathology slides is a requisite to predict the cancer prognosis and select treatments, however, there is a considerable variability in the assessment between observers. While some AI systems mainly rely on transformer-based and nuclei-centric models, they are computationally very demanding so their clinical use is thus limited. Hence, there is a need for practical and easy-to-understand solutions that can be integrated into digital pathology workflows. Methods: We built a hybrid framework that integrates U-Net-based tumor segmentation, convolutional feature extraction, nuclei-aware descriptors, stain normalization, and attention-based multiple instance learning for slide-level RCC grading. …

Many-Body Benchmark Of Electronic Charge And Spin Densities For Li1–Xnio2, Abdul Ghaffar, Shenli Zhang, Liwen F. Wan, Kayahan Saritas, Fernando A. Reboredo, Jaron T. Krogel
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Accurate benchmarks are particularly important for highly correlated oxides as mean-field approximations often fail to describe the subtle balance of charge transfer and magnetism in these materials with an accuracy comparable to experimental needs. Here we present accurate diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) results of the electronic charge and spin densities for the tunable highly correlated oxide Li1–xNiO2 for x = 0, 1/2, and 1. To enable quantitative comparisons, we introduce a robust density-partitioning scheme, extending Voronoi analysis to assign atomic charges from spatially noisy DMC densities. We then benchmark common approximations used in density functional theory (DFT). Comparison against DMC …

Background: Military sexual trauma (MST) can have significant adverse effects on mental health and well-being, often leading to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and maladaptive beliefs. Although effective psychotherapies exist, stigma, confidentiality concerns, and systemic barriers often hinder help-seeking among service members and veterans. Mobile mental health apps offer an accessible and anonymous support alternative, potentially addressing such barriers. However, app effectiveness depends on user engagement and emerging evidence suggests that engagement may be shaped by symptom severity. Objective: This retrospective observational study aimed to explore the relationship between posttraumatic symptom severity and user engagement with Beyond MST (US Department …

Understanding how prey selection influences foraging behavior is critical for assessing ecological flexibility in central place foragers. It can also inform how resources are partitioned among colonial breeding species like seabirds. The goal of the present study was to examine the spatial context and foraging effort by breeding pigeon guillemots Cepphus columba during the chick-provisioning period. We used a combination of miniature GPS loggers, time–depth recorders, and diet surveys of tracked individuals to test for associations between foraging location and prey selection. Guillemots were studied in 2023 and 2024 at Southeast Farallon Island, USA, where historical diet surveys indicate that …

Power Fuzzy Clustering: Flexible Distance Metrics And Inclusion Of Covariates, Phuc T. Nguyen, Cristina Tortora, Antonio Punzo
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Clustering is a fundamental task in statistics and machine learning aimed at identifying homogeneous groups within data. Among the available approaches, fuzzy clustering (FC) is particularly suited to poorly separated boundaries, as it allows partial memberships and captures uncertainty and overlapping structures. We introduce power fuzzy clustering (PFC), a general framework that unifies several FC methods, including fuzzy K-means and probabilistic distance clustering. By complementing the classical fuzzifier with a power parameter on distances, PFC enhances model flexibility while retaining interpretability. To accommodate clusters with different shapes and scales, we incorporate a volume parameter and alternative distance metrics (e.g., Mahalanobis …
