An Assessment Of Training Needs Of Records Management Personnel At The National Archives Of Zimbabwe, Tinashe Mugwambi, Samson Mutsagondo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Assessing the training needs of staff is important as it enables organizations to identify skills gaps and so effect remedial action to bring about productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness. This study used the case study of the Records and Information Management section of the National Archives of Zimbabwe (NAZ) to identify areas where skills and competencies lacked, the reasons why there were skills gaps as well as mitigation measures to deal with the challenge. Without such an exercise, organizations continue to falter and fail to deliver as expected. The study used the organization-task-person model as its theoretical framework. The model propounds …

The Transportation Sector, Cap-And-Trade And Blockchain: A Carbon Credit Trading Platform, Aditya Mankar, Forouzan Golshani

Mineta Transportation Institute

This study offers a solution that facilitates direct trading of carbon credits with no intermediaries by using blockchain technology aligned with the cap-and-trade system. With this solution, along with other major transformations in the industry, the transportation sector can take more ownership of emissions and mitigate the impact of its role as the largest contributor of greenhouse gasses. The solution sits at the confluence of the Cap-and-Trade initiative, carbon credit trading, and blockchain technology. Although the concept of blockchains has been the subject of significant curiosity, scrutiny, boosterism, investment, criticism, it most importantly is at the core of useful, rapidly …

Collaborative System Usability In Spaceflight Analog Environments Through Remote Observations, Shivang Shelat, Jessica J. Marquez, Jimin Zheng, John A. Karasinski

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The conventional design cycle in human–computer interaction faces significant challenges when applied to users in isolated settings, such as astronauts in extreme environments. Challenges include obtaining user feedback and effectively tracking human–software/human–human dynamics during system interactions. This study addresses these issues by exploring the potential of remote conversation analysis to validate the usability of collaborative technology, supplemented with a traditional post hoc survey approach. Specifically, we evaluate an integrated timeline software tool used in NASA’s Human Exploration Research Analog. Our findings indicate that voice recordings, which focus on the topical content of intra-crew speech, can serve as non-intrusive metrics for …

The social, economic, and ecological impacts of wildfires are increasing over much of the United States and globally, partially due to changing climate and build-up of fuels from past forest management practices. This creates a need to improve coupled fire–atmosphere forecast models. However, model performance is difficult to evaluate due to scarcity of observations for many key fire–atmosphere interactions, including updrafts and plume injection height, plume entrainment processes, fire intensity and rate-of-spread, and plume chemistry. Intensive observations of such fire–atmosphere interactions during active wildfires are rare due to the logistical challenges and scales involved. The California Fire Dynamics Experiment (CalFiDE) …

A variety of criteria may influence the efficacy of networks of marine protected areas (MPA) designed to enhance biodiversity conservation and provide fisheries benefits. Meta-analyses have evaluated the influence of MPA attributes on abundance, biomass, and size structure of harvested species, reporting that MPA size, age, depth, and connectivity influence the strength of MPA responses. However, few empirical MPA evaluation studies have used consistent sampling methodology across multiple MPAs and years. Our collaborative fisheries research program systematically sampled 12 no-take or highly protective limited-take MPAs and paired fished reference areas across a network spanning 1100 km of coastline to evaluate …

We characterize the equation of state (EoS) of the SU(N>2) Fermi-Hubbard Model (FHM) in a two-dimensional single-layer square optical lattice. We probe the density and the site occupation probabilities as functions of interaction strength and temperature for N=3, 4, and 6. Our measurements are used as a benchmark for state-of-the-art numerical methods including determinantal quantum Monte Carlo and numerical linked cluster expansion. By probing the density fluctuations, we compare temperatures determined in a model-independent way by fitting measurements to numerically calculated EoS results, making this a particularly interesting new step in the exploration and characterization of the SU(N) FHM.

On December 5, 2022, an indirect drive fusion implosion on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved a target gain Gtarget of 1.5. This is the first laboratory demonstration of exceeding "scientific breakeven"(or Gtarget>1) where 2.05 MJ of 351 nm laser light produced 3.1 MJ of total fusion yield, a result which significantly exceeds the Lawson criterion for fusion ignition as reported in a previous NIF implosion [H. Abu-Shawareb et al. (Indirect Drive ICF Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 075001 (2022)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.129.075001]. This achievement is the culmination of more than five decades of research and gives proof that laboratory fusion, based …

Remaining Useful Life Prediction Using Graph Convolutional Attention Networks With Temporal Convolution-Aware Nested Residual Connections, Yupeng Wei, Dazhong Wu, Janis Terpenny

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Degradation of engineered systems can result in poor performance and failure. Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) have been used to predict the remaining useful life (RUL) of engineered systems by analyzing condition monitoring data. Conventional GCNs typically stack multiple spectral graph convolutional layers, where each layer aggregates condition monitoring data and then projects the aggregated data into another feature space. However, conventional GCNs suffer from two issues. Firstly, repeated aggregation operations affect the temporal correlation of condition monitoring data. Secondly, repeated aggregation and projection operations may generate less significant features, resulting in poor prediction performance. To address these issues, we introduce …

Investigating The Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Manual And Automated Driving: A Systematic Review, Miaomiao Dong, Yuni Lee, Jackie Cha, Gaojian Huang

Mineta Transportation Institute

There are direct correlations between drunk driving and car-related injuries, disabilities, and death. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) may provide useful driver support systems to prevent or reduce road accidents. However, AVs are not yet fully automated and require human drivers to take over the vehicle at times. Therefore, understanding how alcohol affects driving performance in both manual and automated driving is important because manual drives may offer insights into the takeover process in AVs. A systematic review of 53 articles from eight databases was conducted. Findings were categorized based on the human information processing model, which can be extended to the …

Understanding Workforce Diversity In The Transit Industry: Establishing A Baseline Of Diversity Demographics, Asha W. Agrawal, Evelyn Blumenberg, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, Brittney Lu

Mineta Transportation Institute

This study provides baseline data on the status of the racial/ethnic and gender diversity of the transit agency workforce in the U.S. and identifies potential barriers and promising practices for diversifying this workforce. Public transit agencies function best when the diversity of their workforce represents the communities they serve, yet previous research finds an underrepresentation of women and minorities in senior and managerial roles, along with an overconcentration of men and workers of color—particularly Black workers—in operational roles (e.g., drivers, janitors).

The study updates those earlier studies with newer data drawn from five discrete research tasks: 1) review of the …
