Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Consumer interest in ancient grains has been growing in the United States over the last 10 years. Whole grain ancient wheats incorporation into breads may be a way to increase whole grain consumption among Americans, but there is no research evaluating sensory liking of whole ancient wheat breads among American consumers. The objective of this study was to explore the sensory liking of whole ancient wheat bread types and to explore factors that may be associated with sensory preferences. The study recruited 104 untrained participants of diverse ethnicities affiliated with San José State University (San José, CA 95192, USA). Participants …

Exploring Self-Dehumanization As A Factor In Misinformation Belief And Spread, Andrew Weiss, Souvick Ghosh, Frances Johnson
Exploring Self-Dehumanization As A Factor In Misinformation Belief And Spread, Andrew Weiss, Souvick Ghosh, Frances Johnson
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The role of dehumanization is little explored in the literature of misinformation studies, primarily seen as a mechanism of right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) to denigrate members of targeted outgroups. One noted aspect of dehumanization is the unexpected impact it has on the person enacting it as well as victims, resulting in the noticeable phenomenon of self-dehumanization, in which persons deny their own humanity. Notably, a link to self-dehumanization in information behavior may be evident in the foundational research of Eflreda Chatman, whose examination of information poverty, life in the round and normative behavioral theory resulted in sometimes perplexing findings where those …

The economic burden of lameness in dairy cattle is a significant challenge facing the worldwide dairy industry. Studies suggest that it can cost the industry billions of dollars annually, with the exact cost varying by region. In the United States, the cost of lameness is estimated to be approximately $2 billion per year, while in the United Kingdom, it is around £200 million per year. These costs include lost milk production, decreased fertility, and treatment expenses. The impact of lameness on dairy cattle is far-reaching, posing a significant economic burden on farmers and countries and affecting animal welfare, milk production, …

New Zealand Security Agencies’ Secrecy, Accountability, And Transparency In The Modern Era, Ben Amata
New Zealand Security Agencies’ Secrecy, Accountability, And Transparency In The Modern Era, Ben Amata
Secrecy and Society
New Zealand’s security agencies need to balance conflicting missions of secrecy, accountability, and transparency in conducting national security government operations. Citizens expect protection without violating their liberties and for security agencies to act effectively and legally. From public revelations about the agencies and government reform efforts, the agencies evolved from almost total secrecy to greater accountability and transparency since World War II. This study employs a historical methodology, which examines primary source documents to reveal the history of secret behavior and to reform the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service and the Government Communications Security Bureau.

Recent studies of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) have shown their globular cluster (GC) systems to be central in unveiling their remarkable properties and halo masses. Deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging revealed 54 GC candidates around the UDG NGC5846_UDG1 (UDG1), with a remarkable 13 per cent of the stellar light contained in the GC system. We present a kinematic analysis of UDG1's GC system from observations with the integral field spectrograph Keck Cosmic Web Imager on the Keck II telescope. We measure recessional velocities for 19 GCs, confirming them as members of UDG1, giving a total of 20 confirmed GCs when combined …

Thromboembolic diseases are a significant cause of mortality and are clinically treated enzymatically with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). Interestingly, prior studies in fibrin fibers and fibrin gels have demonstrated that thrombolysis may be mechanically sensitive. This study aims to expand mechano-lytic studies to whole blood clots. Furthermore, this study investigates not only how mechanics impacts lysis but also how lysis impacts mechanics. Therefore, clots made from whole human blood are exposed to tPA while the clots are either stretched or unstretched. After, the resulting degree of clot lysis is measured by weighing the clots and by measuring the concentration of …

Nothing Is Off Limits, But Not Everything Is Done Right: Exploring Ineffability, Alejandro Maciel
ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies
Games are capable of addressing absolutely anything. No topic is too big, too controversial, or too emotional. but not everything is done well; the problem isn't the subject, it's always the delivery. When the developers approach heavy topics without care, they risk doing harm. bwhen they do their research and consult communities and write with purpose, the result can be transformative. Representation, when handled with attention, isn't political correctness; it's simply good storytelling. it's how games become more than entertainment. They become tools for empathy, education, and more valuable connections

Evaluation Of Long-Term Performance Of Transportation Earthworks Prone To Weather-Driven Deterioration Under Changing Climate, Amr Morsy, Emma Varela
Mineta Transportation Institute
Embankments are key transportation infrastructure features providing essential support for long, linear stretches of transportation infrastructure, including highways and railways, in California and globally. Clay embankments are susceptible to weather-related deterioration processes that can gradually compromise their stability and, in some cases, lead to unexpected failures. Climate change, along with the associated shifts in weather patterns, is projected to adversely impact weather-related deterioration processes, leading to exacerbated failures and/or shorter service life. This study evaluated the impact of climate change on the rate of weather-driven deterioration of embankments in two locations in California: Los Angeles and Sacramento. Specifically, a multi-phase …

Fuel Cell System Development For Heavy Duty Vehicles, Yu Yang, Hen-Geul Yeh, Bryan Aguirre
Mineta Transportation Institute
As California advances its ambitious goals for transportation electrification to combat climate change, hydrogen-powered fuel cells are emerging as a viable solution for overcoming the challenges of heavy-duty vehicles, offering an efficient alternative to lithium-ion batteries because they produce minimal chemical, thermal, and carbon emissions. One type of hydrogen fuel cell technology called proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) has garnered the most attention due to its distinct advantages, including relatively low operating temperatures (60–80 °C) and reliable performance at high current densities. However, despite their promise, PEMFCs face challenges, including in optimizing stack power output and safety concerns. To …

Construction Of Ultraslow-Spreading Oceanic Crust: New Insights On Volcanic Processes And Deposits From High-Resolution Mapping At The Mohns Ridge, Håvard Hallås Stubseid, Anders Bjerga, Ryan Portner, Haflidi Haflidason, Rolf Birger Pedersen
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The volcanic activity at ultraslow-spreading ridges is less understood compared with that at faster-spreading ridges. Studies of year-to-year changes along the faster-spreading ridges have provided important information regarding the size and frequency of eruptions. However, ultraslow-spreading ridges produce less frequent eruptions, limiting the possibility to study short-term changes in the seafloor morphology to understand longer-term volcanic processes. Therefore, a different approach is needed to estimate the size and frequency of volcanic eruptions at the slowest spreading ridges. Here, we use meter-scale bathymetric maps and backscatter data together with visual observations and geochronology of both basalts and sediments to study the …

As part of a U.S. Department of Education grant, we developed over 60 hours of online professional development (OPD) modules in Spanish. This mixed methods study: (1) explores Spanish-English middle school bilingual teachers’ (MSBTs') shifts in language ideologies before and after completing the OPD, and (2) investigates if and how OPD resources support implementation of practices that reflect translanguaging pedagogy. Data sources include pre- and post-OPD survey results and semi-structured interviews. The two surveys were analyzed based on their scales; the interviews were analyzed iteratively using inductive and deductive codes. Survey analysis showed positive shifts in MSBTs’ beliefs and increased …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Sentiment analysis of movie reviews is a significant application of Natural Language Processing (NLP) that determines whether a review expresses a positive or negative opinion. This analysis is valuable for understanding audience feedback, market trends, and consumer preferences (1-2).The goal of this project is to classify movie reviews as positive or negative using basic NLPheuristics without relying on advanced machine learning or deep learning models. The primary contribution of this research is demonstrating that straightforward heuristic methods, such as word frequency analysis and simple rule-based systems, can achieve reasonable accuracy (3-4). While advanced methods typically offer higher accuracy, heuristic-based models provide …

Politics, Traditional Librarianship, Progressive Librarianship, And Conflicting Visions Of Services For Children, Bill Crowley
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The paper addresses the ongoing challenges within public library youth services between programs of Traditional Librarianship, heavily influenced by local religious and political realities, and Progressive Librarianship, a secular approach aiming to remedy perceived past library failures. At the risk of oversimplification, Traditional Librarianship, the original American public library philosophy, long prioritized helping youth develop into educated citizens with a strong moral foundation. Within the limits of generalizing, Progressive Librarianship can be considered a change-oriented philosophy seeking to provide youth services committed to social justice and a reversal of power relationships to the benefit of those previously underserved. The effects …
