The Influence Of Maternal Glucocorticoids On Offspring Phenotype In High-And Low-Risk Environments, Kirsty J. Macleod, Tracy Langkilde, Cameron P. Venable, David C. Ensminger, Michael J. Sheriff Nov 2021

The Influence Of Maternal Glucocorticoids On Offspring Phenotype In High-And Low-Risk Environments, Kirsty J. Macleod, Tracy Langkilde, Cameron P. Venable, David C. Ensminger, Michael J. Sheriff

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Elevated maternal glucocorticoid levels during gestation can lead to phenotypic changes in offspring via maternal effects. Although such effects have traditionally been considered maladaptive, maternally derived glucocorticoids may adaptively prepare offspring for their future environment depending upon the correlation between maternal and offspring environments. Nevertheless, relatively few studies test the effects of prenatal glucocorticoid exposure across multiple environments. We tested the potential for ecologically relevant increases in maternal glucocorticoids in the eastern fence lizard (Sceloporus undulatus) to induce adaptive phenotypic changes in offspring exposed to high or low densities of an invasive fire ant predator. Maternal treatment had limited effects …

Mapping E-Commerce Locally And Beyond: Citt K12 Special Investigation Project, Thomas O’Brien, Deanna Matsumoto

Mineta Transportation Institute

As all aspects of the American workplace become automated or digitally enhanced to some degree, K12 educators have an increasing responsibility to help their students acquire the technical skills necessary to organize and interpret information. Increasingly, this is done through Geographic Information Systems (GIS), especially in careers related to transportation and logistics. The Center for International Trade & Transportation (CITT) at CSU Long Beach has developed this K12 Special Investigation Project to introduce ArcGIS StoryMaps, an engaging, accessible and sophisticated web-based GIS application. The lessons center on e-commerce and its accompanying environmental and economic impact. Still, the activities can be …

Informing Wetland Management With Waterfowl Movement And Sanctuary Use Responses To Human-Induced Disturbance, Fiona Mcduie, Austen A. Lorenz, Robert C. Klinger, Cory T. Overton, Cliff L. Feldheim, Joshua T. Ackerman, Michael L. Casazza Nov 2021

Informing Wetland Management With Waterfowl Movement And Sanctuary Use Responses To Human-Induced Disturbance, Fiona Mcduie, Austen A. Lorenz, Robert C. Klinger, Cory T. Overton, Cliff L. Feldheim, Joshua T. Ackerman, Michael L. Casazza

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Long-term environmental management to prevent waterfowl population declines is informed by ecology, movement behavior and habitat use patterns. Extrinsic factors, such as human-induced disturbance, can cause behavioral changes which may influence movement and resource needs, driving variation that affects management efficacy. To better understand the relationship between human-based disturbance and animal movement and habitat use, and their potential effects on management, we GPS tracked 15 dabbling ducks in California over ~4-weeks before, during and after the start of a recreational hunting season in October/November 2018. We recorded locations at 2-min intervals across three separate 24-h tracking phases: Phase 1) two …

Photography And Modern Public Housing In Los Angeles, Nicole Krup Oest

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In the 1940s, Los Angeles faced an acute housing crisis. The local housing authority responded with a controversial program of slum clearance and public housing, as well as photography that presented the crisis in innovative ways. This book brings this photography together with previously unpublished sources to uncover a largely unexamined concept of home photography. Case studies from Los Angeles, New York and Berlin along with FBI records and almost forgotten bulletins invite a new understanding of the history of housing and photography, in which scientists and photographers played central roles.

Application Of Intelligence Needs For Promoting Users Patronage In Libraries Of Public Tertiary Institutions In Ondo State, Nigeria, Adewusi Akinola

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract

It has been observed in recent times that most undergraduates either do not visit their campus library or do so occasionally throughout their stay in the university. Librarians and faculty members alike complain that young people too often conceive the research process as beginning and ending with an internet search. Students’ conviction that the internet provides more efficient, productive, and enjoyable paths to information may perhaps be the reason for this scenario. The question is, will librarians leave it as it currently exists or work now to make the library be as it must exist in the future? This …

Improved Shadow Correction For The Marine Optical Buoy, Moby, Kenneth Voss, Edouard Leymarie, Stephanie Flora, B. Carol Johnson, Arthur Gleason, Mark Yarbrough, Michael Feinholz, Terrance Houlihan

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

A 3-D instrument self-shading correction has been developed for the MOBY upwelling radiance measurements. This correction was tested using the 23 year time series of MOBY measurements, at the Lanai, Hawaii site. The correction is small (less than 2%) except when the sun and collectors are aligned within 20° azimuth on opposite sides of the main MOBY structure. Estimates of the correction uncertainty were made with a Monte-Carlo method and the variation of the model input parameters at this site. The correction uncertainty was generally less than 1%, but increased to 30% of the correction in the strongest shadow region.
