Adversarial Attacks And Defenses In Multivariate Time-Series Forecasting For Smart And Connected Infrastructures, Pooja Krishan, Rohan Mohapatra, Sanchari Das, Saptarshi Sengupta
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The emergence of deep learning models has revolutionized various industries over the last decade, leading to a surge in connected devices and infrastructures. However, these models can be tricked into making incorrect predictions with high confidence, leading to disastrous failures and security concerns. To this end, we explore the impact of adversarial attacks on multivariate time-series forecasting and investigate methods to counter them. Specifically, we employ untargeted white-box attacks, namely the Fast Gradient Sign Method (FGSM) and the Basic Iterative Method (BIM), to poison the inputs to the training process, effectively misleading the model. We also illustrate the subtle modifications …

L&D On-Ramps And Off-Ramps For The Mobility Workforce: A Blueprint For Knowledge Ecosystem Formation In The Fourth Industrial Revolution, Tyler Reeb, Barbara Taylor, James Reuter
Mineta Transportation Institute
After a yearlong consensus study, this report presents a blueprint with implementation tools and strategies for CSULB and other CSU campuses to adopt a knowledge ecosystem model in higher education. By conducting talent pipeline pilots for internship preparation activities and related survey and focus group research, the research team found near universal support for pursuing university-industry partnerships. Faculty identified extracurricular activities, experiential learning opportunities, and guidance on further education as their top three priorities when mentoring students in professional development. There was, however, a paradoxical perception among faculty about what universities provide in terms of knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) …

Using Virtual Learning Labs To (Re)Mediate Exclusionary Discipline Practices For Young Children Of Color With Disabilities, Saili Kulkarni, Sunyoung Kim, Nicola Holdman
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Disabled children of color (ages 3-8) face multiple, intersecting oppressions in schools and are more likely to be excluded and/or harshly punished for minor behavioral issues compared to white and/or non-disabled peers. Approaches that center multiple stakeholders (families, teachers, and administrators) using a formative intervention called a Learning Lab (LL) have worked to reduce discipline disparities among secondary and upper primary students of color with disabilities (Bal, 2016). Knowing that discipline disparities can start as early as preschool (Kulkarni et al., 2021), however, we examined how LL (re)mediates exclusionary and harsh discipline practices for young children of color with disabilities. …

Genie: Enhancing Information Management In The Restaurant Industry Through Ai-Powered Chatbot, Megha Gupta, Venkatasai Dheekonda, Mohammad Masum
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In the dynamic restaurant industry, we introduce "Genie," an AI-powered chatbot, represents an advancement in customer service efficiency through technological innovation. Designed to enhance restaurant operations including order processing, reservations, and FAQs management, Genie leverages advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. By converting input queries into word embeddings and applying a sophisticated tag classification system, Genie precisely interprets customer intents and generates accurate responses, thereby markedly improving the dining experience. Our thorough examination of various word embeddings and classifiers—Word2Vec, Glove, BERT, Gaussian Naive Bayes, XGB, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), and Recurrent Neural Networks—revealed that the combination of Word2Vec and ANN …

Navigating The Digital Frontier: Key Challenges For Dental College Librarians In Managing Electronic Collections, Trupti Aniruddha Tulsankar, Vrushali Rane
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study focuses on the challenges and opportunities in digital collection management faced by librarians in Dental College libraries across Maharashtra. The study findings reveal that there are limitations in using e-resources and the ICT infrastructure in dental college libraries needs to be improved. The challenges dental college librarians face include unannounced hikes in the pricing of digital resources, poor understanding and interpretation of licensing agreements, interrupted power supply, and lack of skilled library staff to manage resources. By addressing these challenges, Dental colleges can enhance their ability to give students access to the latest e-resources and support their learning …

To predict ecosystem change in the Arctic Ocean, understanding Arctic phytoplankton phenology is essential. We develop a marine ecosystem model focusing on phytoplankton dynamics and the competition for multiple resources based on knowledge from in situ data obtained in the Chukchi Sea. The model is designed to include the unique ecological characteristics of the Arctic Ocean. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first model successfully simulating the current paradigm for Arctic phytoplankton phenology, including both under-ice blooms and succession of phytoplankton groups. Sensitivity experiments show that the dominance of diatoms can be sustained by lateral transport of …

Importance: Surrogate misunderstanding of patient survival prognosis in the intensive care unit (ICU) is associated with poor patient and surrogate outcomes. Shared decision-making (SDM) may reduce misunderstanding. Objective: To evaluate the association between SDM-aligned communication and prognostic misunderstanding. Design, Setting, and Participants: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at 13 medical and surgical ICUs at 5 hospitals in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Washington between December 2012 and January 2017. Participants were surrogates of adult patients receiving prolonged mechanical ventilation and ICU physicians. Analysis was performed May to November 2023. Exposure: SDM-aligned communication during ICU family meetings, defined as the presence …

Who’S Actually Afraid Of Artificial Intelligence (Ai?), Anthony Adeloye
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Purpose of the study: The main purpose of the study is to explore and discuss the views of a group of Nigerian academic librarians about Artificial Intelligence (AI). The study is considered important because a perusal of an academic librarian’s role requires the ability to organise and manage knowledge which invariably entails the use of some sort of technology which in the context of this study, is artificial intelligence (AI).
Method: To understand the degree to which academic librarians in Nigeria perceive the role of AI in academia, and indeed, society, data were collected from an online survey that …

Every individual has a fundamental right to communicate and access equal opportunities to fully participate in society. However, this right may not be fully manifested for individuals with communication access needs especially those from underrepresented groups. This project had two aims, to determine 1) the specific experiences, challenges, and aspirations related to the cultural identities of people of color (POC) who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and 2) how AAC service providers and manufacturers can support POC AAC users in a culturally and linguistically responsive manner. We conducted an online, asynchronous focus group with seven participants over eight weeks. …
