Progressive Oxygenation Of The North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre, Jannes Koelling, Andrea J. Fassbender, Alison R. Gray, Gregory C. Johnson, Jonathan D. Sharp, Dustin Carroll

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) is one of the few regions where the deep ocean is in direct contact with the atmosphere, making it a key location for interior ocean ventilation through gas exchange. We use a novel observation-based data product to analyze large-scale patterns of the air-sea flux of oxygen, finding a mean annual flux of 48.1 (Formula presented.) 14.6 Tmol (Formula presented.) from the atmosphere into the ocean integrated over the SPNA ((Formula presented.) N– (Formula presented.) N). An analysis of a fully-closed oxygen budget from the data-assimilative ECCO-Darwin ocean biogeochemistry model suggests that the net uptake is …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Understanding the sequence of embryonic and larval development and the factors necessary to induce reproduction in captivity are critical for developing new species for commercial or conservation aquaculture. In this study, we describe the adult reproductive behaviours and development of eggs, embryos and early larvae of captive monkeyface pricklebacks, Cebidicthys violaceus, compared to previously documented wild observations. Eggs were laid in cohesive clutches and guarded by the male parent until hatching began 23 days post fertilization at 13°C. Fertilized eggs were spherical, approximately 1.5 mm in diameter, covered in an opaque chorion, and contained six adhesive pads around the outside. …

On The Road To A Better Life? Rural Road And Economic Development In Albania, Santosh Gautam, Ermal Llirjani, Patralekha Ukil

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This study evaluates the impact of investment in rural roads on household welfare in Albania using a difference-in-differences method. We find that treated households experienced a 35-percentage point increase in the road quality and reduced travel times to the nearest motorable roads. Land and housing values rose significantly, and household heads were less likely to be unemployed, with a shift toward self-employment. While household income did not change significantly, consumption—particularly on non-food items—increased. These findings highlight the welfare-enhancing effects of improved connectivity and suggest that rural infrastructure investments can promote local economic activity. Policymakers should consider pairing road upgrades with …

Coastal Water Information Orders: Reverse-Engineering New York City’S Data Dashboards, James A. Hodges, Rachel Paprocki

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This article examines the information systems governing individual relationships to urban coastal waterways, drawing from two data publication initiatives in New York City. In these two cases, data structure and web design features cultivate specific forms of knowledge about water quality, pollution, and the health risks represented by recreational activities such as swimming and fishing. Analysis of the data structure and web source code shows the forms of knowledge concerning water quality each project facilitates or obscures. Findings are considered within the framework of an ‘information order’, which refers to the prevailing conditions for knowledge that are facilitated by communication …

Acceleration Metrics Predict Propulsive Power At Within-Dive Temporal Scales In California Sea Lions, Mason R. Cole, Elizabeth A. Mchuron, Dan P. Costa, Paul J. Ponganis, Birgitte I. Mcdonald Oct 2025

Acceleration Metrics Predict Propulsive Power At Within-Dive Temporal Scales In California Sea Lions, Mason R. Cole, Elizabeth A. Mchuron, Dan P. Costa, Paul J. Ponganis, Birgitte I. Mcdonald

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Background: Locomotion can drive variation in an animal’s energy expenditure, but the energetic cost of movement is difficult to measure at fine time scales in free-living animals. The 3 axis acceleration metrics Dynamic Body Acceleration (DBA) and Minimum Specific Acceleration (MSA) are commonly used in biologging studies as a proxy for activity or energy expenditure. These metrics hold potential for relatively simple and affordable estimates of movement-based energy expenditure, but have not been validated for use at fine temporal scales (e.g., within dives) due to logistical limitations of metabolic measurement techniques. Here, we use rates of propulsive power (W kg …

Salmon Rushdie’S Frontier Pedagogy: Notes On Two Episodes In “Step Across This Line", Narayana Chandran Kizhakkethil

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

In the Indian multilingual classrooms teachers often discover certain details about the political semantics of the English texts they teach. When that happens, the language means much more to non-English readers who happily realize that English grants them a little more freedom to convey meanings to them than it does a monolingual readership. My example here is Salman Rushdie’s Tanner Lectures in Human Values called “Step Across This Line.” While his immediate context is the 9/11 tragedy and the politically prudent ways the US might cope with its aftermath, he returns time and again to those who brave borders, face …

Without Them, There Is No You: The Role Of Personal Choice And History In Resisting Political Control, Heidi Turner Oct 2025

Without Them, There Is No You: The Role Of Personal Choice And History In Resisting Political Control, Heidi Turner

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

In 2011, Korean-American journalist Suki Kim went undercover as an English teacher at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, working to teach her students while simultaneously recording everything she could about the workings of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). In 2014, her book Without You, There is No Us was published as a memoir, in part due to the inclusion of personal details considered less relevant to the story, thereby undercutting her journalistic credentials.

Here, using C. S. Lewis’s The Abolition of Man as a theoretical framework for understanding oppressive regimes and the ways that they control …

Central to the system is the Dynamic Wildfire Response Algorithm (DWRA), a hybrid decision-making framework combining AI-driven techniques including reinforcement learning (RL), genetic algorithms (GA), and deep learning …

Robust Hashing For Improved Cnn Performance In Image-Based Malware Detection, Sanket Shekhar Kulkarni, Fabio Di Troia Oct 2025

Robust Hashing For Improved Cnn Performance In Image-Based Malware Detection, Sanket Shekhar Kulkarni, Fabio Di Troia

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This paper presents a comparative study on the impact of robust hashing in enhancing image-based malware classification. While Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have shown promise when working with image-based malware samples, their performance degrades significantly when obfuscation techniques are taken into consideration to hamper the malware classification or detection. To address this, we apply a robust hashing technique that generates invariant visual representations of malware samples, enabling improved generalization under obfuscation implemented as image salting. Using a custom obfuscation method to simulate polymorphic variants, we evaluate MobileNet, ResNet, and DenseNet architectures across five salting conditions (0% to 40%). The results …

Hypoxia Exposure Fine-Tunes Mitochondrial Function In Sea Turtle Cells, B. Gabriela Arango, David C. Ensminger, Dianna Xing, Céline A. Godard-Codding, José Pablo Vázquez-Medina

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Abstract: Sea turtles experience extreme fluctuations in oxygen levels derived from extended breath-hold diving, yet the cellular adjustments underlying hypoxia tolerance in these animals remain poorly understood. Here, we employed metabolite profiling, extracellular flux assays and microscopy analyses of the mitochondrial reticulum to investigate how primary cells derived from sea turtles and lizards cope with extended hypoxia exposure. Cells from both species proliferate in primary culture, stain positive for fibroblast markers, are metabolically active and stabilize HIF1-α when exposed to chemical or environmental hypoxia. In contrast to lizard cells, sea turtle cells exhibit a faster and more robust response to …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Edible insects are nutritious, having high levels of protein, essential amino acids, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. In areas where sorghum is a primary crop, mixing this gluten-free grain with protein-rich insect powder provides a novel approach to making nutrient-rich products. Understanding the sorghum and mopane worm flours' metabolomic changes during bioprocessing can however, enhance their nutritional value and food safety. The research investigated metabolite compounds that are found in raw and processed (fermented, malted (sorghum), and ultrasonicated) mopane worms and sorghum. In the study, sorghum grains were traditionally fermented and malted at 35°C for 48 h and ultrasonicated for …

Transcultural Competence And Empathy In Language Education: Imagining The Unimaginable, Michiko Uryu Sep 2025

Transcultural Competence And Empathy In Language Education: Imagining The Unimaginable, Michiko Uryu

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The 2007 MLA report offered guidelines and competencies for foreign language majors at American universities in the age of globalization. The notion of translingual and transcultural competence suggests that today’s foreign language education is not merely a matter of language acquisition, but humanistic learning. The ultimate goal for foreign language learners should be to gain alternative ways of seeing the world, namely, “imagining the unimaginable” (Ozick, 1987). This underscores the central importance of empathy in foreign language education. Yet the true challenge lies in how to assess such an abstract concept. Even eighteen years since its initial publication, the report …

Climate Change-Related Threats To Railroads: Implications For Threat, Hazard And Risk Assessment, Frances L. Edwards, Daniel C. Goodrich Sep 2025

Climate Change-Related Threats To Railroads: Implications For Threat, Hazard And Risk Assessment, Frances L. Edwards, Daniel C. Goodrich

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Climate change has created new challenges for railroads around the world. The rail systems operate in open environments, subjecting them to increased heat, changing locations of heavy rains, developing sea level rise and storm surge, and a longer and stronger wildfire season. This research investigates how an updated threat and hazard identification and risk assessment (THIRA) can lead to the development of climate adaptation strategies that limit damage and disruption to the railroad enterprise. The THIRA analyzes which threats are of most concern in a specific rail segment, and which climate change adaptation strategies give a beneficial return on investment.

Deep Learning-Based Drowsiness Detection System For Driver’S Safety, Sindhu Vidyanathan Dixith, Shrikant Jadhav, Youngsoo Kim, Naveenkumar Jayakumar

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Driver drowsiness is a leading contributor to road accidents, accounting for over 100,000 crashes and approximately ~1000 fatalities each year in the United States alone, as per National Safety Council (NSC). To mitigate this urgent public-safety risk, we propose a real-time Driver Drowsiness Detection System that achieves both high accuracy and fast inference on standard hardware. Our key idea is to combine two complementary deep-learning strategies: 1) a custom Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) paired with a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier, and 2) a lightweight transfer-learning model built upon a pre-trained convolutional backbone. We evaluate these approaches on two datasets: …

Using Large Language Models To Investigate The Origin Of Chronic Wasting Disease, G. Kent Webb Sep 2025

Using Large Language Models To Investigate The Origin Of Chronic Wasting Disease, G. Kent Webb

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This use case reports on the impressive output, hallucinations, instability, and limitations of three Large Language Models (LLMs): ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok. The LLMs were prompted in an investigative sequence and responses checked. The collected information supports the common theory that chronic wasting disease (CWD) in North America originated in 1967 at a research facility in Fort Collins, Colorado, where deer were reported to have been exposed to sheep with a similar disease - scrapie. Findings include that: no sheep with scrapie were detected in the area around Fort Collins prior to 1967; domestic sheep reportedly exposed to scrapie were …
