A Comparison Of Methods To Evaluate Energy Expenditure Of Incubating Wandering Albatrosses, Scott A. Shaffer, D P. Costa, H Weimerskirch Jan 2001

A Comparison Of Methods To Evaluate Energy Expenditure Of Incubating Wandering Albatrosses, Scott A. Shaffer, D P. Costa, H Weimerskirch

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Measurements of incubation energetics can vary depending on the method used to measure metabolism of an incubating bird. Therefore, we evaluated the energy expenditure of six male and four female wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans Linnaeus) using doubly labeled water (DLW), the rate of mass loss, and estimates of metabolic water production derived from water influx rate (WIR). Incubation metabolic rates (IMR) determined with DLW ( 169 ± 21 kJ kg d SD) were significantly lower than estimates derived from mass loss ( 277 ± 46kJ kg d SD) and WIR ( males=289 ± 60 kJ kg d vs. females = …

Storytelling, Folktales And The Comic Book Format, Gail De Vos Jan 2001

Storytelling, Folktales And The Comic Book Format, Gail De Vos

Faculty Publications

The reading process in comics is an extension of text. In text alone the process of reading involves word-to-image conversion. Comics accelerate that by providing the image. When properly executed, it goes beyond conversion and speed and becomes a seamless whole. In every sense, this misnamed form of reading is entitled to be regarded as literature because the images are employed as a language. There is a recognizable relationship to the iconography and pictographs of oriental writing. When this language is employed as a conveyance of ideas and information, it separates itself from mindless visual entertainment. This makes comics a …

Playing “Sherlock Holmes”: Enhancing Students’ Understanding Of Prejudice And Stereotyping, Ellen N. Junn, L. Grier, D. Behrens Jan 2001

Playing “Sherlock Holmes”: Enhancing Students’ Understanding Of Prejudice And Stereotyping, Ellen N. Junn, L. Grier, D. Behrens

Office of the Provost Scholarship

A very simple, innovative classroom exercise designed to heighten students' understanding of stereotyping and prejudice is described. Students' evaluation of the exercise was very positive. Students reported greater awareness and understanding of their own and others’ stereotypes and prejudice and of the negative effects of prejudice, with females more than males reporting enhanced awareness of others’ stereotyping. Students also rated the exercise as very enjoyable. There was a trend among Non-White more than White students to report that the exercise helped show them how to reduce stereotypes and more Non-White than White students offered solutions for reducing prejudice that involved …

Defensible Space In East Palo Alto: University And Bay Mixed-Use Development, Thanicha Niyomwan Dec 2000

Defensible Space In East Palo Alto: University And Bay Mixed-Use Development, Thanicha Niyomwan

Master's Projects

University and Bay Mixed-use Development will be planned based mainly on the defensible space concept. The concept of a pedestrian-friendly environment would be a secondaiy concept to be applied to the development plan. Since the defensible space concept deploys residents themselves as the key players to ensure their own security, the success of the proposed development depends on residents. Only when the residents choose to adopt the intended role, the proposed development becomes defensible (Newman, 1975).

Residents’ cooperation plays a vital role not only in this proposed development but also in any neighborhood revitalization. Attempts to save a declining neighborhood …
