Tradition And Innovation: Extremeñan Connections And Collaborations, Jo Farb Hernandez

The writer discusses the collaboration between California artist Sam Hernández and the Moreno León family from Extremadura, Spain, who create tinajas, monumental ceramic storage vessels. While Hernández approached this collaboration with admiration for the elegance of the traditional tinaja, and respect for the Moreno León ceramists, the innovation in superimposing his own images led to a totally new set of sculptures that, though linked to his earlier oeuvre, are markedly different from it. By recontextualizing the tinaja into a contemporary narrative through the overlay of his chosen subject matter, he shifted the collaboration into a new territory, as, at the …

Community Libraries In Indonesia: A Survey Of Government-Supported And Independent Reading Gardens, Stian Håklev

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Reading gardens (taman bacaan) are a unique form of community libraries that have sprouted up in Indonesia since the year 2001. They represent the culmination of more than a century of development of both private and government-led efforts to bring books to people. This article surveys the current situation of community libraries in Indonesia, using statistics from the government, as well as a survey conducted among community libraries in the greater Jakarta area. This report provides data on terrorist attacks against public surface transportation targets and serious crimes committed against such targets throughout the world. The data are drawn from the MTI database of attacks on public surface transportation, which is expanded and updated as information becomes available. This analysis is based on the database as of February 20, 2010. Data include the frequency and lethality with which trains, buses, and road and highway targets are attacked; the relationship between fatalities and attacks against those targets; and the relationship between injuries and attacks against them.
