“From Where I Sit”: Filipino Youth, Sexuality And Immigration In Participatory Action Research, Valerie Francisco Oct 2010

“From Where I Sit”: Filipino Youth, Sexuality And Immigration In Participatory Action Research, Valerie Francisco

Faculty Publications, Sociology

Studies of young people's experiences of sexuality rarely discuss how immigration and settlement impact youths' understanding of their bodies, sexual identities, and knowledge. In this paper, Filipino youth in collaboration with adult allies, conducted a New York City-based participatory action research project and found that young people's experiences and understanding of sexuality are narrated by silences, solidarity and paradoxical spaces. This study explores the contradictory experiences of passivity and subjectivity in the sexual lives of young people. Lastly, as an adult collaborator on the project I assess how “participation” as a logic of inquiry allows for youth and adult collaborators …

Monitoring Carboplatin Ototoxicity With Distortion-Product Otoacoustic Emissions In Children With Retinoblastoma, Shaum Bhagat, Johnnie Bass, Stephanie White, Ibrahim Qaddoumi, Matthew Wilson, Jianrong Wu, Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo

Faculty Publications

ObjectiveCarboplatin is a common chemotherapy agent with potential ototoxic side effects that is used to treat a variety of pediatric cancers, including retinoblastoma. Retinoblastoma is a malignant tumor of the retina that is usually diagnosed in young children. Distortion-product otoacoustic emission tests offer an effective method of monitoring for ototoxicity in young children. This study was designed to compare measurements of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions obtained before and after several courses of carboplatin chemotherapy in order to examine if (a) mean distortion-product otoacoustic emission levels were significantly different; and (b) if criterion reductions in distortion-product otoacoustic emission levels were observed in …

In Appreciation Of The Kind Of Rhetoric We Learn In School: An Institutional Perspective On The Rhetorical Situation And On Education, Kathleen F. Mcconnell Aug 2010

In Appreciation Of The Kind Of Rhetoric We Learn In School: An Institutional Perspective On The Rhetorical Situation And On Education, Kathleen F. Mcconnell

Faculty Publications

Theoretical discussion of the rhetorical situation has been dedicated largely to questions of its ontology and of how it is constituted. Where this ontological orientation has inclined theorists to treat the concept as a theoretical premise, an institutional orientation would instead frame constructivist accounts of the rhetorical situation as a political-pedagogical commitment and treat the ethical obligations that arise from any given situation as bound to specific institutional forms. From an institutional perspective, the rhetorical situation is to conscience as the institution of school is to education. The distinction of both rhetorical situations and schools lies not in their contrivedness …

A Genome-Wide Analysis Reveals No Nuclear Dobzhansky-Muller Pairs Of Speciation Genes Between S. Cerevisiae And S. Paradoxus, But Suggests More Complex Incompatibilities, Katy Kao, Katja Schwartz, Gavin Sherlock Jul 2010

A Genome-Wide Analysis Reveals No Nuclear Dobzhansky-Muller Pairs Of Speciation Genes Between S. Cerevisiae And S. Paradoxus, But Suggests More Complex Incompatibilities, Katy Kao, Katja Schwartz, Gavin Sherlock

Faculty Publications

The Dobzhansky-Muller (D-M) model of speciation by genic incompatibility is widely accepted as the primary cause of interspecific postzygotic isolation. Since the introduction of this model, there have been theoretical and experimental data supporting the existence of such incompatibilities. However, speciation genes have been largely elusive, with only a handful of candidate genes identified in a few organisms. The Saccharomyces sensu stricto yeasts, which have small genomes and can mate interspecifically to produce sterile hybrids, are thus an ideal model for studying postzygotic isolation. Among them, only a single D-M pair, comprising a mitochondrially targeted product of a nuclear gene …

The Labyrinth Of Philosophy In Islam, Nader El-Bizri Jul 2010

The Labyrinth Of Philosophy In Islam, Nader El-Bizri

Comparative Philosophy

This paper focuses on the methodological issues related to the obstacles and potential horizons of approaching the philosophical traditions in Islam from the standpoint of comparative studies in philosophy, while also presenting selected case-studies that may potentially illustrate some of the possibilities of renewing the impetus of a philosophical thought that is inspired by Islamic intellectual history. This line of inquiry is divided into two parts: the first deals with questions of methodology, and the second focuses on ontology and phenomenology of perception, by way of offering pathways in investigating the history of philosophical and scientific ideas in Islam from …

Scientometric Study Of Doctoral Dissertations In Biochemistry In The University Of Kerala, India, K.G. Pillai Sudhier, V. Dileep Kumar

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Biochemistry is the most fascinating subject as it deals with the chemical language of life. The ultimate goal of biochemistry is to describe the phenomena that distinguish living from non-living in the language of chemistry and physics. Researchers in biochemistry use specific techniques native to biochemistry, but increasingly combine these with techniques and ideas from genetics, molecular biology and biophysics. In India at present around 75,000 students are enrolled in research and nearly 11,000 are awarded PhDs every year, of which 50 percent are from science and technology disciplines. Theses and dissertations reflect the scholarly communication process. Scientometrics and citation …

This paper examines the role of libraries in the preservation and accessibility of the indigenous knowledge in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The survey method was used for the study and data were collected with the questionnaire from 82 respondents drawn from six libraries in the region. Niger Delta people use indigenous knowledge to improve agricultural production, acquire education and basic skills, conserve their natural environment, and resolve conflicts. Libraries in the Niger Delta region do not manage indigenous knowledge resources effectively. To preserve and make indigenous knowledge accessible, libraries should collaborate with indigenous people to record indigenous knowledge, …

Situated Practices Of Information Use And Representation: An Ethnographic Study Of A Web Design Project For Boys, Kristen Rebmann Jun 2010

Situated Practices Of Information Use And Representation: An Ethnographic Study Of A Web Design Project For Boys, Kristen Rebmann

Faculty Publications

This article explores the production practices employed by children building personal webpages in a semi-structured afterschool program: the Fifth Dimension (5D). Following a critical Multiliteracies (CritMLs) approach to learning design, this ethnographic study introduced web-building practices to the children of the 5D and followed their production of personal webpages over a 9 month period. By structuring the intervention this way, it was possible to simultaneously observe the development of both the webpage as artifact as well as the child-participant. Along these lines, the study describes the unique and particular social contexts from which personal webpages emerge and develop over time. …

Hispanic Computer Brigade Silicon Valley Computer Camp, Patricia Backer, Belle Wei

Faculty Publications

Hispanic students are vastly underrepresented in computing during a time when the Hispanic population in the U.S. is growing dramatically. By 2020, Hispanics will account for 50% of the workers in California. And, by 2050, the Hispanic population is projected to triple in the United States with 25% of the U.S. population being of Hispanic origin. The College of Engineering (CoE) at San José State University proposed a new approach for recruiting Hispanic students into computing disciplines and careers through the Hispanic Computer Brigade (HCB) initiative. By forming HCBs in two local high schools, we aimed to inspire and engage …

Use Of Reproductive Health Information On Contraception Among Female Undergraduates Of University Of Ibadan, Mercy I. Ijirigho

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Survey and focus group research on a sample of female undergraduates at the University of Ibadan sought information on their use of information on contraception. Results showed that female undergraduates receive information on contraception regularly through the broadcast media and friends; however, they have only partial knowledge, because of twelve method of contraception, they are generally familiar with only three, particularly condoms. A majority have a positive perception of contraception and feel that they should be exposed to information on the adoption of contraception and that it should be discussed openly since such information is quite necessary, although they also …

H. T. Tsiang: A Critical Overview Of His Work In Literary And Social Context, Floyd Cheung

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

A Chinese exile in the United States, H. T. Tsiang (1899-1971) wrote several books in English that represent pioneer works in the canon of Asian American literature. Although few know his work today, Tsiang is one of the earliest and most prolific innovators of Asian American literature, anticipating some of the appropriative methods, formal techniques, and critical strategies that have come to characterize the tradition.
