Hybrid Veggies & Mixed Kids: Ecocriticism And Race In Ruth Ozeki's Pastoral Heartlands, Melissa Eriko Poulsen Oct 2011

Hybrid Veggies & Mixed Kids: Ecocriticism And Race In Ruth Ozeki's Pastoral Heartlands, Melissa Eriko Poulsen

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This paper explores the troping of racial categories and mixed race bodies in Ruth Ozeki’s All Over Creation (2003) and My Year of Meats (1999). Moving through both transnational and local space, Ozeki’s writes an ecocritical pastoral text in order to resist representations of people of mixed race stemming from nineteenth century racial theory. Drawing attention to the consumption of food within and across national borders, whether genetically modified potatoes or hormone-infused beef, Ozeki simultaneously highlights the uncritical consumption of the language of biology around the mixed race body. All Over Creation and My Year of Meats are constructed around …

Feasting With 'The Other': Transforming The Self In Food Adventuring Programs, Jacqui Kong Oct 2011

Feasting With 'The Other': Transforming The Self In Food Adventuring Programs, Jacqui Kong

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

Food adventuring television programs are a relatively recent phenomenon which merge two previously distinct genres of television programming, i.e. travel programs and cooking shows. These programs often feature celebrity chefs or famous personalities going in search of ‘new’, ‘exciting’ culinary adventures which, more often than not, open doors to experiencing and learning about different groups, cultures and their specific ways of life. As such, ‘difference’ is the highlight and main focus of these programs – not just the cuisine which is featured. It is this multilayered, complex terrain in these food adventuring programs which leaves much room for analysis. ‘Difference’, …

A Psychoanalytical Approach To Bich Minh Nguyen's Stealing Buddha's Dinner, Wenying Xu Oct 2011

A Psychoanalytical Approach To Bich Minh Nguyen's Stealing Buddha's Dinner, Wenying Xu

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

Racial minorities in the U.S. are often tormented by the tension between the corporeal and the ontological, with the former experienced as confining and the latter expansive. Such ambivalence often expresses itself in one's relationship with food. Here I propose to illustrate how Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytical theory on desire can assist us in understanding ethnicity as a bodily performance, which I venture to call an embodied ontology, applying this concept to Bich Minh Nguyen's Stealing Buddha's Dinner (2007).

Generation Of Forests On Terrain With Dynamic Lighting And Shadowing, Jonathan Ben-David Oct 2011

Generation Of Forests On Terrain With Dynamic Lighting And Shadowing, Jonathan Ben-David

Master's Projects

The purpose of this research project is to exhibit an efficient method of creating dynamic lighting and shadowing for the generation of forests on terrain. In this research project, I use textures which contain images of trees from a bird’s eye view in order to create a high scale forest. Furthermore, by manipulating the transparency and color of the textures according to the algorithmic calculations of light and shadow on terrain, I provide the functionality of dynamic lighting and shadowing. Finally, by analyzing the OpenGL pipeline, I design my code in order to allow efficient rendering of the forest.

Interface Design For Graphics Editor On Multi- Touch Point Systems, Srujitha Mullapudi Oct 2011

Interface Design For Graphics Editor On Multi- Touch Point Systems, Srujitha Mullapudi

Master's Projects

The main objective of the project is to use the touch sensitive device capability of the iPad to give a better user experience and functionalities for the artists. In this project, I have explored different interactions that can give a better experience for artist when compared to traditional computer-mouse interaction. In the traditional Computer-mouse interaction it is very difficult for the user to draw smooth curves, without having to use built-in functions for drawing curves. In this application the user can use the touch panel to do free drawing, the user can basically feel the device as a object for …

Augmented-Life Phone Organizer, Chao-Hsin Shih Oct 2011

Augmented-Life Phone Organizer, Chao-Hsin Shih

Master's Projects

Augmented-Life Phone Organizer (ALPO) is a geo-based mobile application for users to search for businesses and make corresponding actions such as calling, navigating, or viewing comments about the business. Users can take image notes and attach them to a virtual wall, so others can view the image at the same GPS coordinates later. Users can also view all business images and augmented notes superimposed on the real world through a mobile device screen and camera. We have measured application usability and feature practicality by conducting function tests on three users, and the results are encouraging.

Establishing Lower Developmental Thresholds For A Common Blowfly: For Use In Estimating Elapsed Time Since Death Using Entomologyical Methods, Gail S. Anderson, Jodie-A. Warren

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Forensic entomology is a science used to estimate a post-mortem interval (PMI). Larvae develop at predictable rates and the time interval for this development can be used to estimate the PMI. Environmental temperatures are not constant and fluctuate with the photoperiod. In early and late insect seasons, temperatures can drop to below threshold temperatures where development essentially ceases. Threshold temperatures differ for different species and should be determined by raising insects at the extremely low temperatures. The lower threshold temperature for Protophormia terraenovae for egg hatch is 10.3°C ; for first instar larvae to molt to second instar larvae it …

Meso-Circulation Associated With Summer Convection Over The Central Antilles, Mark Jury, Sen Chiao Sep 2011

Meso-Circulation Associated With Summer Convection Over The Central Antilles, Mark Jury, Sen Chiao

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

The mesoscale structure of the circulation and convection over central Caribbean Antilles islands in midsummer is analyzed. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent over islands such as Hispaniola and Jamaica as confluent trade winds circulate over heated mountainous topography. Observational data from a rain gauge network, profiles from aircraft and radiosonde, satellite estimates of rainfall, and mesoscale reanalysis fields are studied with a focus on July 2007. A statistical decomposition of 3-hourly high-resolution satellite rainfall reveals an “island mode” with afternoon convection. Trade winds pass over the mountains of Hispaniola and Jamaica with a Froude number <1, leading to a long meandering wake. The Weather Research and Forecasting model is used to simulate climatic conditions during July 2007. The model correctly locates areas of diurnal rainfall that develop because of island heat fluxes, confluent sea breezes, and mountain wakes.

Determinants Of Library Use Among Students Of Agriculture: A Case Study Of Lagos State Polytechnic, Ajayi Taiwo Abosede, Ogunyemi Oluwole Ibikunle

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The study looked at the factors that affect agricultural students’ use of the library. Simple random sampling was used to select 145 students. The data were analyzed using the probit model. Age was found to have a negative effect on the use of the library by students. Alternative to library have negative significant effect while library use with friend, availability of relevant materials and hours spent in the library have significant positive effect on the library use. Positive Library staff response to students encourages students’ use of the library while the location of the library does not have negative effect …

Using Skos To Express Faceted Classification On The Semantic Web, Theresa Putkey Sep 2011

Using Skos To Express Faceted Classification On The Semantic Web, Theresa Putkey

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper looks at Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) to investigate how faceted classifications can be expressed in RDF and shared on the Semantic Web. This paper first restates a definition of faceted classification, shares a faceted taxonomy, restates the definition of the Semantic Web and RDF, then looks into the SKOS standard and the PoolParty software to build a faceted taxonomy in an SKOS compliant format. This paper then discusses the research approach.
