Virtual Kung Fu Sifu With Kinect, Naveen Kumar Keerthy Apr 2012

Virtual Kung Fu Sifu With Kinect, Naveen Kumar Keerthy

Master's Projects

In this computer world almost everything is made available online. All possible systems are making use of the Internet and so does the learning systems. People willing to learn any kind of arts, but have no time would look for a tutor who would be available at his/her ease. An attempt to satisfy the same is the project that I’ve implemented. My focus is mainly on Kung fu an ancient form of Chinese Martial arts. Learning Kung fu needs a lot of practice and therefore demands having a professional kung fu master monitoring all the time, which is very expensive. …

Influence Of Motivation On Turnover Of Library Personnel In Some Public Universities In South West Nigeria, Oyetola Solomon Olusegun

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

A characteristic of organisations in the 21st century is the continuous and rapid pace of change. Volatile free market economic environments, rapidly changing technologies, global competition, workforce diversity, and new organisational structures are some of the challenges an organisation faces. Organisations may differ in the priority they attach to the human resource component, in their efforts toward achieving high productivity and competitive advantage, yet they all recognize the value of a qualified, motivated, stable, and responsive team of employees (Huselid, 1995).

Retention and productivity levels of the existing workforce are an essential concern in human resource management. Employee …

Towards Accelerated Development Of Academic Library Services In Nigeria For National Development In The 21st Century, Rose B. Okiy

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

Academic libraries are libraries established in tertiary institutions. They include libraries in Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education. The roles of these libraries are similar and that is to effectively support institutions to attain the key functions of teaching, research and community service. These institutions are responsible for the production of middle and higher level manpower for national development. The extent to which they are able to effectively accomplish that task depends largely on how well their libraries are equipped with the relevant information resources.

According to the National Policy of Education (1998), the goals of tertiary education are …

Perceived Use Of Networked Multimedia Applications On Learning In Selected Universities In South West Nigeria, Emmanuel K. Ogunlana

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

Unlike paper books, networked electronic multimedia allows many people simultaneous access to the same materials. These resources are available all the time, from office or home to research institutes and Universities. More sources can be consulted and relevant information can be obtained immediately. Widespread use of this technology has implications for the learning, studying, local network capabilities and the services provided by libraries. It adds new dimensions to the learning experience, most concepts are easier to present and comprehend when words are complemented with images and animations. Learners retain more when a variety of senses are engaged in delivering …

The Effects Of Video Formats In Online News: A Study Of Recall And Stickiness, August Grant, Diane Guerrazzi, Jack Karlis Apr 2012

The Effects Of Video Formats In Online News: A Study Of Recall And Stickiness, August Grant, Diane Guerrazzi, Jack Karlis

Faculty Publications

News organizations putting content on their websites may better engage their audience by offering a choice of raw video rather than packages. A two-by-three experiment studied the relationships among video format, time spent, and recall for online news. Test subjects viewed a traditional, broadcast-type standard news “package,” a disassembled package, and raw video with text. Results showed users spent significantly more time with the raw video format than with the other two formats. Time spent was strongly correlated with post-test recall of elements of each story, but there was no direct relationship between format and recall. A model is proposed …

Ototoxic Hearing Loss And Retinoblastoma Patients, Shaum Bhagat Mar 2012

Ototoxic Hearing Loss And Retinoblastoma Patients, Shaum Bhagat

Faculty Publications

Chemotherapy is often used in the conservative management of retinoblastoma. Chemotherapy drugs, while ameliorative, can produce long-lasting side effects that potentially can affect survivor quality of life. Carboplatin is a common chemotherapy agent with known ototoxic side effects that is used in the treatment of retinoblastoma (Rodriguez-Galindo et al., 2003). The potential for carboplatin-induced hearing loss is of concern to the medical professional, given that retinoblastoma is often diagnosed in early childhood and children with retinoblastoma have visual impairments. This chapter will outline the mechanisms underlying carboplatin ototoxicity. The extent of knowledge concerning the pathophysiology of carboplatin-induced hearing loss will …

Facilitating Ict Adoption Among Research Scientists In Ghana, Lucy Dzandu, Perpetua Dadzie

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

Information in the modern context is considered as a strategic resource parallel in importance to land, labour, capital, and entrepreneurship – the traditional economic resources which are vital inputs for national development at all levels. Without information, the very functioning of society would come to a standstill. One institution which plays a vital role in the collection, processing, storage and dissemination of information is the library. Libraries of all types serve as information providers and aim at satisfying the information needs of their clientele.

In the present era new information technologies are used to perform library functions. The librarian …

Educators' Perspective On Library Education In Nigeria, Adam Gambo Saleh Mar 2012

Educators' Perspective On Library Education In Nigeria, Adam Gambo Saleh

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Library education in Nigeria is very much tied up with the general social and political history of the country. As such, those who aspired to become librarians went to Britain to qualify for the Associate of the Library Association (ALA). However, with the attainment of independence in 1960, the country witnessed the establishment of tertiary institutions at various levels. The first library school was established at University College Ibadan in 1960.

Prior to this period, the Carnegie Corporation has sponsored two studies (Margaret Wrong in 1939 and Ethel Fagan in 1940) to survey the library needs of West Africa with …

Nailing Jelly To The Wall: Understanding Postmodernism's Influence On Library Information Science, Bob Lemoine

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

How did we get into this anyway? "Defining" postmodernism

Q: What do you get when you cross a postmodernist with a Mafia boss?

A: Someone who will make you an offer that no one can understand!

(Cook, 2001(b), p. 18)

This is the attempt to define something which by its very nature avoids definition. Before we can speak of the influence postmodernism is having on library and information areas, we have to at least make the attempt to understand what postmodernism is. Several of these "definitions" are what postmodernism is not while others focus on what postmodernism seeks to be. …

Particle Transport Over Rough Hillslope Surfaces By Dry Ravel: Experiments And Simulations With Implications For Nonlocal Sediment Flux, Emmanuel Gabet, Morgan Mendoza Feb 2012

Particle Transport Over Rough Hillslope Surfaces By Dry Ravel: Experiments And Simulations With Implications For Nonlocal Sediment Flux, Emmanuel Gabet, Morgan Mendoza

Faculty Publications

Past studies of hillslope evolution have typically assumed that soil creep processes are governed by a linear relationship between local hillslope angle and transport distance. The assumption of “linear diffusion” has fallen out of favor because, when coupled with an expression of mass continuity, it yields unrealistic hillslope profiles. As a consequence, a better understanding of the mechanics of sediment transport is needed. Here we report results from a series of flume experiments performed to investigate sediment transport by dry ravel, a common soil creep process in arid and semiarid environments. We find that, at gentle slopes, transport distances follow …
