Walking Through The Aristotelian Lane: Amartya Sen On Rational Choice, Barada Laxmi Panda
Walking Through The Aristotelian Lane: Amartya Sen On Rational Choice, Barada Laxmi Panda
Comparative Philosophy
The term ‘rational choice’ has great impact on the life of a rational agent. Rational choice helps the agent to understand her capability of making choice and the intentional involvement for working on a particular aspect considering certain circumstances. At the same time, this creates a lot of dilemmas in terms of understanding the freewill of the agent while being committed for a work. Following this, Amartya Sen’s discussion on this subject seems relevant where Sen very prominently reflects on the point that rational choice involves freedom, rationality, and normativity. These three features are coherent with each other and with …
A Constructive Dialogue Between Confucianism And Transcendentalism Of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Yuedi Liu
A Constructive Dialogue Between Confucianism And Transcendentalism Of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Yuedi Liu
Comparative Philosophy
Ralph Waldo Emerson, an American Transcendentalist, is known as “the American Confucius”. He is also deeply influenced by the Confucianism from Confucius to Mencius, moreover, there is a constructive dialogue and engagement between them. However, it can not be inferred that Confucianism is also transcendentalism. First, Confucianism is based on “One-worldness”. Second, Confucianism is a kind of Guanxi-ism (relationism), so it is not individualism. Third, Confucianism is not intuitionism, but has the“structure of emotion-reason”. Fourth, Confucianism is not focus on “Oversoul”, but towards a pan-aestheticism based on the integration of Rites and Music. However, there are many similarities between American …

Carbon-rich Wolf-Rayet (WR) binaries are a prominent source of carbonaceous dust that contribute to the dust budget of galaxies. The “textbook” example of an episodic dust-producing WR binary, WR 140 (HD 193793), provides us with an ideal laboratory for investigating the dust physics and kinematics in an extreme environment. This study is among the first to utilize two separate JWST observations, from Cycle 1 ERS (2022 July) and Cycle 2 (2023 September), to measure WR 140’s dust kinematics and confirm its morphology. To measure the proper motions and projected velocities of the dust shells, we performed a novel point-spread function …

Animals requiring purposeful movement for survival are endowed with mechanoreceptors, called proprioceptors, that provide essential sensory feedback from muscles and joints to spinal cord circuits, which modulates motor output. Despite the essential nature of proprioceptive signaling in daily life, the mechanisms governing proprioceptor activity are poorly understood. Here, we identified nonredundant roles for two voltage-gated sodium channels (NaVs), NaV1.1 and NaV1.6, in mammalian proprioception. Deletion of NaV1.6 in somatosensory neurons (NaV1.6cKO mice) causes severe motor deficits accompanied by loss of proprioceptive transmission, which contrasts with our previous findings using similar mouse models to target NaV1.1 (NaV1.1cKO). In NaV1.6cKO animals, we …
The Influence Of Maternal Size/Age Effects On The Physiological Responses Of Adult Female Gopher Rockfish (Sebastes Carnatus) To Ocean Acidification And Hypoxia, Dylan H. Sarish
Master's Theses
Climate change is rapidly reshaping the chemistry of the ocean. Fishes living in California coastal waters are experiencing increased ocean acidification and hypoxia (OAH) due to more frequent and intense upwelling. Nearshore rockfish may be particularly threatened by these conditions due to their long generational times. However, it is unknown how OAH may impact maternal physiology and reproduction in these viviparous fish. To understand the physiological effects of OAH during gestation, adult female gopher rockfish, Sebastes carnatus, were exposed to a variety of combined OAH stress treatments during different gestational stages. Routine metabolic rate (RMR), maximum metabolic rate (MMR), blood …

Japanese Incarceration Memorial As Trauma Portfolio Play, A. J. Faas, Alyssa Singh, Cibella Gamma
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In collaboration with the Japanese American Museum of San José, California, we examined their exhibit of WWII-era incarceration of Japanese Americans to understand how the presentation of different positionalities (e.g., Japanese/American, loyal/disloyal) engage with and contest the terms of incarceration and internal politics within the Japanese American community. In our analysis, we focus on the reproduction and contestation of particular narratives of power and identity and treat the memorial exhibit as a variety of community-based “trauma portfolio” that unsettles state bureaucratic constructions of suffering and (in)justice. We conclude by identifying transformative possibilities for engaging with the different positionalities of incarcerated …

Promoting Participation And Self-Efficacy Among Youth With Disabilities In Community-Based Vocational Education, Allison Hollender
Promoting Participation And Self-Efficacy Among Youth With Disabilities In Community-Based Vocational Education, Allison Hollender
Doctoral Projects
Occupational therapy, with its focus on participation, contextual adaptation, and strength-based practice, is uniquely suited to support the growth and inclusion of youth in transition (Angell et al., 2018; Cahill et al., 2020; Carroll et al., 2025). Research indicates that transitional-aged youth (TAY) with disabilities, ages 14-24, are less likely to graduate from high school, pursue postsecondary education, or live independently (BLS, 2024; Cheng & Shaewitz, 2022; Cook et al., 2015). These disparities are compounded by occupational deprivation, or limited opportunities for meaningful participation, which can negatively impact long-term self-efficacy and belonging (Arbesman & Logsdon, 2011; Cahill et al., 2020). …
Unconditional-To-Conditional Transfer And Optimization For Web-Based Skybox Gan, Crystal Kwong
Unconditional-To-Conditional Transfer And Optimization For Web-Based Skybox Gan, Crystal Kwong
Master's Projects
Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are known for their ability to generate high quality
images mimicking real life or even particular art styles. Yet for all their capability, casually
training a GAN on an average machine can be infeasible as GANs require an enormous amount
of time and data to train. Even with a trained GAN, model inference demands heavy
computations, making GANs difficult to deploy on applications. To address these limitations,
techniques such as transfer learning and quantization have been leveraged to speed up training of
GANs and lighten computational cost of GAN inference. This project aims to use such …
Effects Of Data Augmentation On Sponge Identification Using Computer Vision Models, George Ku
Effects Of Data Augmentation On Sponge Identification Using Computer Vision Models, George Ku
Master's Projects
Coral reefs can be primarily found in tropical and sub-tropical regions of our oceans, providing a thriving habitat for millions of species. Marine sponges, which can be frequently found in coral reefs, play a critical role that contributes to the maintenance of these ecosystems, including the recycling of nutrients through water filtration. However, rising ocean temperatures and acidification due to climate change have resulted in the bleaching and death of coral reefs worldwide. In order to preserve these reefs and the sponges that depend on them, scientists have been performing studies on their biodiversity. This includes collecting numerous images of …
Phishing Detection Using Continual Learning And Large Language Models, Gopi Prajeev Battula
Phishing Detection Using Continual Learning And Large Language Models, Gopi Prajeev Battula
Master's Projects
Adaptive phishing detection remains crucial as the nature of cyber-attacks changes over time, which renders static models obsolete. This project extends phishing detection through the implementation of continual learning approaches, namely Elastic Weight Consolidation (EWC) and Learning Without Forgetting (LWF) with RoBERTa, a Large Language Model (LLM) and compares the results of these approaches against GPT-4o-mini, another LLM. Our approach begins with fine-tuning RoBERTa on multiple phishing datasets to establish an effective baseline. EWC is then implemented to preserve vital model parameters based on their importance measured by the Fisher Information Matrix, while LWF uses knowledge distillation to retain prior …
Optimization Of Permutation Flowshop Scheduling Using An Island Genetic Algorithm For Makespan Minimization, Sahil Salim
Optimization Of Permutation Flowshop Scheduling Using An Island Genetic Algorithm For Makespan Minimization, Sahil Salim
Master's Projects
The Permutation Flowshop Scheduling Problem is a well-known NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem that involves the sequencing of n jobs across m machines in the same order to minimize the total makespan value. This project proposes a Heterogeneous Island Genetic Algorithm framework (HIGA). Each island represents a group of solutions that evolve in parallel using different initialization heuristics, crossover and mutation operators, and adaptive parameters. A dynamic, stagnation-based migration strategy is proposed to maintain targeted communication between the islands. The proposed HIGA approach was compared against the basic Standard Genetic Algorithm (SGA) and a more advanced Niche-based Genetic Algorithm (NEH-NGA) on …

“They're Like Slash”: Multimodality And Embodied Agency In Students' Critical Engagements With Texts, María José Aragón, Meghan Corella, Nora W. Lang
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Despite recent calls to more fully incorporate multimodal perspectives into literacies research, there is still limited scholarship examining how students critically engage in reading activities by drawing on embodied practices. Racially and linguistically minoritized students are particularly disadvantaged by dominant logocentric and developmentalist approaches, which privilege oral and written discourse and often position these students as less capable of performing complex literacy practices. Drawing from three independent ethnographic studies, our multimodal interactional analysis examines how students of a range of ages and raciolinguistic backgrounds use embodied actions and other semiotic resources to agentively navigate text, task, and ideological constraints in …

Changing fire regimes have important implications for biodiversity and challenge traditional conservation approaches that rely on historical conditions as proxies for ecological integrity. This historical-centric approach becomes increasingly tenuous under climate change, necessitating direct tests of environmental impacts on biodiversity. At the same time, widespread departures from historical fire regimes have limited the ability to sample diverse fire histories. We examined 2 areas in California's Sierra Nevada (USA) with active fire regimes to study the responses of bird, plant, and bat communities to a broad spectrum of temporal, spatial, and severity patterns of fire. Bird and plant species richness peaked …

Words And Stardom: Modernist Poetic Responses To Asta Nielsen, Karl E. Toepfer
Words And Stardom: Modernist Poetic Responses To Asta Nielsen, Karl E. Toepfer
Open Educational Resources
This essay discusses how four modernist poets portrayed the Danish movie star Asta Nilesen (1881-1972). German Hans Schiebelhuth (1895-1944) describes the "demonic" power of Nielsen's image to awaken dark aspects of his adolscent personality. For the Flemish poet Paul van Ostaijen (1896-1928), Nielsen's cinematic image provokes a radical shattering of language into extravagant "word-images." Danish writer Rudolf Broby-Johansen (1900-1987) linked Nielsen's image to a radical (Marxist) critique of oppressive sexual politics within a capitalist society. German Franz Behrens (1895-1977) composed a lengthy, expressionist ode to Nielsen from the perspective of one who actually worked as a screenwriter in the German …

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are widely implemented tools for long-term ocean conservation and resource management. Assessments of MPA performance have largely focused on specific ecosystems individually and have rarely evaluated performance across multiple ecosystems either in an individual MPA or across an MPA network. We evaluated the conservation performance of 59 MPAs in California's large MPA network, which encompasses 4 primary ecosystems (surf zone, kelp forest, shallow reef, deep reef) and 4 bioregions, and identified MPA attributes that best explain performance. Using a meta-analytic framework, we evaluated the ability of MPAs to conserve fish biomass, richness, and diversity. At the …

Wildlife researchers must balance the need to safely capture and handle their study animals to sample tissues, collect morphological measurements, and attach dataloggers while ensuring their results are not confounded by stress artifacts caused by handling. To determine the physiological effects of research activities including chemical immobilization, transport, instrumentation with biologgers, and overnight holding on a model marine mammal species, we collected hormone, blood chemistry, hematology, and heart rate data from 19 juvenile northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) throughout a translocation experiment. Across our six sampling timepoints, cortisol and aldosterone data revealed a moderate hormonal stress response to handling accompanied …
A Unifying Double-Reference Approach To Semantic Paradoxes: From The White-Horse-Not-Horse Paradox And The Ultimate-Unspeakable Paradox To The Liar Paradox In View Of The Principle Of Noncontradiction, Bo Mou
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The purpose of this study is to suggest and explain an engaging approach to three distinct types of (alleged or genuine) semantic paradoxes, the White-Horse-Not-Horse Paradox, the Ultimate-Unspeakable Paradox, and the Liar Paradox, in a unifying way that is sensitive to distinct features of them. Although the three types of semantic paradoxes address distinct types of objects, and although their seemingly paradoxical features are different (alleged or genuine), their distinct structures and contents can be understood and treated on the same common ground, which is jointly conceived in people's pretheoretic understandings of truth and of the double-reference feature of people's …

Recent decades have seen a renewal of interest in panpsychism as a solution to the hard problem of consciousness. This has, in part, also driven an increase in interest in classical Indian philosophical traditions among analytic philosophers of mind. Many of these cross-cultural studies pertaining to panpsychism (and cosmopsychism) have focused on one particularly influential school of Indian philosophy, Advaita (non-dual) Veda nta, the most famous proponent of which is sankara. In this work, we would like to consider the view of another influential philosopher and the school that developed based on his view - Rama nuja (eleventh century CE) …

Species distribution models (SDMs) have been developed for multiple cetacean species within the California Current Ecosystem (CCE) from shipboard survey data collected by the Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) in summer and fall, thus limiting the ability to inform management decisions in cool seasons when abundance and distribution patterns are substantially different. Winter and spring SDMs have been developed for a few species using California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) shipboard survey data, but model predictions are limited to the waters off southern and central California. In this study, winter and spring density estimates for the entire CCE study area …

It is challenging to stimulate gamma motor neurons, which are important regulators of muscle spindle afferent function, without also recruiting alpha motor neurons. Here, we test the feasibility of stimulating gamma motor neuron axons using optogenetics in two transgenic mouse lines. We used an ex vivo muscle–nerve preparation in adult mice to monitor muscle spindle afferent firing, which should increase in response to gamma motor neuron-induced lengthening of the sensory region of the muscle spindle. A force transducer measured alpha motor neuron-mediated twitch contractions. Blue LED light (470 nm; 1–5 mW) was delivered via a light guide to the sciatic …

Aquaculture contributes approximately half of all global aquatic food production and will be critical in addressing future seafood demand, including the United States (U.S.). Many states, territories, and countries are developing and updating aquaculture specific policy in an effort to plan for, and better manage the expansion of aquaculture in their territorial waters. The U.S. has considerable potential to sustainably expand aquaculture production, which has been a focus in both federal and state policy. State aquaculture plans have been used for over 40 years to help plan and coordinate aquaculture development, with a growing emphasis on sustainability. Here, we located …
