Visual literacy, which is the ability to effectively identify, interpret, evaluate, use, and create images and visual media, is an important aspect of science literacy. As molecular processes are not directly observable, researchers and educators rely on visual representations (e.g., drawings) to communicate ideas in biology. How learners interpret and organize those numerous diagrams is related to their underlying knowledge about biology and their skills in visual literacy. Furthermore, it is not always obvious how and why learners interpret diagrams in the way they do (especially if their interpretations are unexpected), as it is not possible to “see” inside the …

From Fully-Supervised Single-Task To Semi-Supervised Multi-Task Deep Learning Architectures For Segmentation In Medical Imaging Applications, S M Kamrul Hasan
Theses
Medical imaging is routinely performed in clinics worldwide for the diagnosis and treatment of numerous medical conditions in children and adults. With the advent of these medical imaging modalities, radiologists can visualize both the structure of the body as well as the tissues within the body. However, analyzing these high-dimensional (2D/3D/4D) images demands a significant amount of time and effort from radiologists. Hence, there is an ever-growing need for medical image computing tools to extract relevant information from the image data to help radiologists perform efficiently. Image analysis based on machine learning has pivotal potential to improve the entire medical …

Journal of Applied Packaging Research
Tray blanks were moisturised to study the effect of different blank moisture content levels on forming behaviour and mechanical properties of paperboard tray packages. The blank moisturisation was done by spraying water to the blanks before their three-dimensional (3D) forming. The trays were 3D formed by press forming or deep drawing. Visual quality and punch force values were used as indicators to evaluate the forming behaviour of the trays. The mechanical properties of the trays were investigated with compression, torsion, and storing tests. A high blank moisture content reduced the punch force, and the elevated blank moisture was connected to …

Frequency Control Of Microgrid Network Using Intelligent Techniques – Ann, Pso And Anfis, Ann Mary Toms
Theses
The electric grid is a complex system that transmits electricity from the point of generation to the point of consumption. According to the IEA, worldwide energy-related carbon emissions in 2021 will be 36.3Gt, 60% greater than at the start of the industrial revolution. Researchers have used intelligent solutions for power system frequency regulation to ensure that the system's frequency is maintained. A proper frequency control of the microgrid necessitates the modeling and study of the systems. To emulate the operation of the human brain, frequency control employs a variety of artificial intelligence-based computer algorithms. This thesis generates a complete state …

Articles
This report presents a mathematical model of juvenile delinquency in the New York State. In particular, we develop a juvenile delinquency system of non-linear differential equations using the mathematical epidemiology framework. In constructing this model, we assume that juvenile delinquency can be studied as a socially infectious disease. The stability of the juvenile delinquency-free equilibrium of the model is examined using the standard non-linear dynamical systems theory technique. We carried out a data fitting based on real-life data from the New York State Criminal Justice Services. The research result reveals that the formulated model conforms with the available data and …

Analysis Of Strain Correction Procedures For Single Fiber Tensile Testing, Amy Engelbrecht-Wiggans, Amanda L. Forster
Articles
Accurate strain measurement for single fibers is critical for many engineering applications. Typically, the crosshead displacement is used to calculate strain when performing mechanical testing, however there are complicating factors: slack in the specimen or slipping/seating in the grips, other grip effects, and load frame compliance. These are addressed in various testing standards for single fibers, such as ASTM Standards D3822, “Standard Test Method for Tensile Properties of Single Textile Fibers” and C1557, “Standard Test Method for Tensile Strength and Young's Modulus of Fibers”. In this work, an analysis of single fiber test data has been performed to examine both …

Side-Channel Attacks And Countermeasures For The Mk-3 Authenticated Encryption Scheme, Peter Fabinski
Side-Channel Attacks And Countermeasures For The Mk-3 Authenticated Encryption Scheme, Peter Fabinski
Theses
In the field of cryptography, the focus is often placed on security in a mathematical or information-theoretic sense; for example, cipher security is typically evaluated by the difficulty of deducing the plaintext from the ciphertext without knowledge of the key. However, once these cryptographic schemes are implemented in electronic devices, another class of attack presents itself. Side-channel attacks take advantage of the side effects of performing a computation, such as power consumption or electromagnetic emissions, to extract information outside of normal means. In particular, these side-channels can reveal parts of the internal state of a computation. This is important because …

Effect Of Plasma Treatment On Soil Degradation Of A Biodegradable Mulch Film, Swapnil Bhattacharya
Theses
Biodegradable Mulch Films (BMFs) offer a sustainable alternative to traditional non-degradable PE mulch films. However, their slow rate of biodegradation can lead to plastics accumulation in the soil. In this study, a commercially available BMF based on polybutylene adipate co-terephthalate (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA) is examined. Here the effects of gliding arc plasma treatment on the bulk and surface properties, as well as its soil degradation behavior, is studied. An increase in surface oxygen containing species and hydrophilicity was observed following plasma treatment. Only a small hydrophobic recovery was noted over 30 days. No changes in the bulk polymer …
