Thermal Degradation Of Polymer Blends Containing The Poly(Hydryoxy Ether Of Bisphenol-A), Joseph S. Formosa May 1987

Thermal Degradation Of Polymer Blends Containing The Poly(Hydryoxy Ether Of Bisphenol-A), Joseph S. Formosa

Theses

The thermal degradation of blends of phenoxy with polycaprolactone , poly ( 1 , 4-butylene adipate), poly(l,4-cyclohexane-dimethylene succinate), poly( 2 , 2-dimethyl-l , 3-propylene succinate), and poly( hexamethylene sebacate) has been studied using thermogravimetric analysis, direct-pyrolysis mass spectrometry, and infrared spectroscopy. For each blend, the polyester componenent was less thermally stable in the blend compared to the pure state. The thermal stability of the phenoxy was not affected by the presence of the polyesters in the blends. Blends of phenoxy with polycaprolactone and with poly ( 1 , 4-butylene adipate) degrade in two-step mechanisms where the amount of weight loss …

A Digital Indicator Diagram Generation System For The Ricardo E6 Engine, Peggy A. Faber May 1987

A Digital Indicator Diagram Generation System For The Ricardo E6 Engine, Peggy A. Faber

Theses

This paper explains and evaluates an indicator diagram generation system for a single cylinder, internal combustion, research engine. The apparatus is digital and consists of a piezo-electric pressure transducer with charge amplifier, a shaft encoder, a digital oscilloscope, and a computer with printer. Motoring data provides valuable information on the performance of the system which is used in the computer software to produce results accurate to 5.4 percent. Results include the indicator diagram itself, the work produced, the horsepower, and the indicated mean effective pressure. Included are an overview of indicator diagram theory, discussion of the apparatus, evaluation of the …

Four Input Nor Gate Array For Emcr210, Theodore Lemmond May 1987

Four Input Nor Gate Array For Emcr210, Theodore Lemmond

Theses

At the Rochester Institute of Technology, a freshmen laboratory project, utilizing a NOR logic array and the existing PMOS process, has been successfully incorporated into the microelectronic engineering curriculum. This paper outlines the structure of this new course. Students are introduced to digital logic and I.C. fabrication by designing a simple digital circuit and realizing it in the gate array. Completion of the circuit is accomplished by making a mask and photolithographically defining the metal layer. The circuits are then tested for functionality.

A Study Of Toray's Negative Working Driographic Printing Plate And The Effect Ink Tack Has On Toning In The Non-Image Area, Larry M. Capitano May 1987

A Study Of Toray's Negative Working Driographic Printing Plate And The Effect Ink Tack Has On Toning In The Non-Image Area, Larry M. Capitano

Theses

Driography is a planographic printing process. A driographic printing plate differs from a conventional offset lithographic plate in that water is not required to keep the non-image area clean of ink during printing. Water, or fountain solution, is not required during printing because a silicone rubber coating which repels ink is used for the non-image area of a driographic plate. The first driographic plate was introduced in the early 1970's by the 3M Company. The plate was a positive working printing plate and has since been discontinued. Driography has since been researched by a number of companies but only one …

Psyxpert: An Expert System For Aiding Psychiatrists In The Diagnosis Of Psychotic Disorders, Mary A. Overby Apr 1987

Psyxpert: An Expert System For Aiding Psychiatrists In The Diagnosis Of Psychotic Disorders, Mary A. Overby

Theses

Psyxpert is an expert computer system designed to aid psychiatrists in the diagnosis of mental disorders when psychotic features are the prominent part of the presenting clinical picture. The knowledge base contains psychiatric knowledge in the form of production rules. The system uses a backward-chaining control strategy to guide the consultation. Psyxpert provides a menu-driven user interface and an explanation subsystem. The system uses certainty and importance measures to produce a diagnosis with an attached certainty factor and recommendations for further evaluation or therapy. Psyxpert is written in Virginia Tech HC Prolog and runs on Digital Equipment Corporation's VAX 11/780 …

A Finite Element Solution Of Thermal Wave Propagation In Elastic Media, Dominic N. Dalo Apr 1987

A Finite Element Solution Of Thermal Wave Propagation In Elastic Media, Dominic N. Dalo

Theses

The rational theory of thermodynamics is used to develop equations governing the propagation of thermal waves. A new vector quantity is introduced to account for the thermal waves. The phenomenon of thermal wave propagation is illustrated by considering the problem of one-dimensional heat conduction in a finite slab subjected to a heat flux pulse. The solution is obtained via the finite element method. A discussion of the results and their significance is also presented.

An Expert System To Optimize Combinational Logic, Gu-Ching Lin Feb 1987

An Expert System To Optimize Combinational Logic, Gu-Ching Lin

Theses

Twenty to fifty percent of the active area of most semicustom integrated circuits is devoted to combinational logic. Automating the synthesis and optimization of combinational circuitry can result in significant improvements in both the design cycle time and the overall area of the implementation. This thesis presents a rule-based system that optimizes combinational logic for a given technology. By performing Boolean function minimization, decomposition, logic synthesis and a series of local transformations4, the system achieves area reductions and saves valuable design time.

The Effect Of S-Donor Ligands On The Sensation Of Silver Bromide Crystals With Iridium (Iii), Juan A. Zuleta Feb 1987

The Effect Of S-Donor Ligands On The Sensation Of Silver Bromide Crystals With Iridium (Iii), Juan A. Zuleta

Theses

Different concentrations of potassium thiocyanate (SCN) were used in combination with Iridium (III) hexachloride (Ir) to surface sensitize an octahedral silver bromide emulsion. Surface sensitivity increased by 0.90 log H over the unsensitized emulsion when Ir and SCN were added during sensitization compared to 0.45 log H when the iridium salt was used alone. A decrease of 2.40 log H was observed when an Ir-SCN complex was formed and then added to the emulsion. An increase of 1.05 log H was obtained if gold, thiocyanate and iridium were used. Similar results were obtained using tetramethylthiourea (TMT) or thiodiglycol (TG) instead …

Research And Development Of A Computer Program For Calculating Rotor System Dynamic Response Including Foundation And Pedestal Flexibility Effects, Shixiang Zhou Feb 1987

Research And Development Of A Computer Program For Calculating Rotor System Dynamic Response Including Foundation And Pedestal Flexibility Effects, Shixiang Zhou

Theses

Details are presented of the research and development of a computer program for the calculation of Rotor System Dynamic Response including foundation and pedestal flexibility effects. Eight-coefficient bearings are used to permit elliptical orbit rotor motions. The bearings are mounted in massive, damped flexible pedestals, which are themselves mounted upon a foundation structure with distributed mass and stiffness properties. The foundation is in turn, supported on a number of flexible-damped supports. Different foundation properties in the horizontal and vertical directions are included. The results obtained are compared with data by other investigations. Applications of the code are described which validate …
