A Mathematical Analysis Of An Electronic Dot Generating Scanner For Dot Resolution And Tone Reproduction, Frederick K. Waechter Oct 1987

A Mathematical Analysis Of An Electronic Dot Generating Scanner For Dot Resolution And Tone Reproduction, Frederick K. Waechter

Theses

An electronic dot generating scanner is a complex machine. This complexity is based in the photographic methods which the scanner is designed to duplicate. This study addresses the mathematical principles of the entire scanner system. This paper was intended to provide an improved understanding of the scanner system. The hypothesis states that a mathematical analysis with experimental verification can be developed to accurately model the internal optics, tone reproduction, and output dot characteristics of an electronic dot generating scanner. The analysis begins with a functional block diagram, which shows the information flow through the scanner. This diagram breaks the process …

Factors Influencing The Rate Of Sensitization And Maximum Sensitivity Of An Iridium (Iii) Surface Sensitized Silver Bromide Emulsion, Nimrod Natan Sep 1987

Factors Influencing The Rate Of Sensitization And Maximum Sensitivity Of An Iridium (Iii) Surface Sensitized Silver Bromide Emulsion, Nimrod Natan

Theses

A monodisperse silver bromide emulsion was surface sensitized with potassium hexachloroiridate (III). The rate of sensitization and maximum photographic sensitivity were determined at different sensitization conditions. The effects of silver ion concentration (pAg), length of sensitization, and the presence of the thiocyanate onion during sensitization were defined. The highest gain of sensitivity of an Iridium sensitized emulsion over an unsensltized emulsion was 0.43 log H units at pAg 9 after 30 minutes of after-ripening at 70 C. The highest gain of sensitivity of an iridium + thiocyanate sensitized emulsion over an unsensltized emulsion was 0.55 log H units at pAg …

Comparison Of The Mid-Frequency Line Edge Noise Algorithms Of Jim Hamerly And Yigal Gur For The Best Correlation To The Psychophysical Defect Known As Raggedness, Kevin Huff Aug 1987

Comparison Of The Mid-Frequency Line Edge Noise Algorithms Of Jim Hamerly And Yigal Gur For The Best Correlation To The Psychophysical Defect Known As Raggedness, Kevin Huff

Theses

A study was conducted to compare the mid-frequency line edge noise algorithms of Jim Hamerly and Yigal Gur. Comparisons were made to determine which algorithm correlated best with the psychophysical defect known as raggedness. Tests were conducted on "standard" observers using a series of test images with varying amounts of edge noise. A master image was produced photographically and ensuing images generated with random error using electrophotographic processes. Scanning of the images to determine output metric values was done on a Zeiss microdensitometer. It was found that with electrophotographic prints, the Hamerly algorithm has a correlation coefficient of .83. Determination …

Evaluation Of Some Multivariate Cusum Schemes, Susan L. Spindler

Theses

This paper will review and compare five multivariate CUSUM techniques. Two of these are proposed by Crosier (1986), the multivariate CUSUM and the CUSUM of T (COT). It will also compare two proposed by Pignatiello (1986), the multivariate CUSUM #1 (MCl) and the multivariate CUSUM #2 (MC2). The fifth method which will be compared is the multivariate Shewhart method. A discussion of the method of computation and a comparison of results of all the above methods using the same data set will be included. Additionally, a short commentary on the cusum method by Woodall and Ncube is enclosed. Graphical interpretation …

Interactive Virtual Debugger For Gpss/H, Eugene Johnson Jul 1987

Interactive Virtual Debugger For Gpss/H, Eugene Johnson

Theses

GPSS (General Purpose System Simulator) is a language, designed to aid the computer modeling and simulation of a wide variety of different real life systems. As with any other large programming project, debugging GPSS programs is unavoidable and often difficult. The present thesis describes an Interactive Visual Debugging System for GPSS/H which attempts to simplify the debugging task by allowing the programmer to observe the actual behavior of the model in simulated real time, while preserving all traditional interactive debugging tools - breakpoints, system traps, selective displays, etc. The present version of the Interactive Visual Debugger is developed for the …

Dye Image Stability Of Polaroid Time Zero Supercolor Prints, Anthony Zych Jun 1987

Dye Image Stability Of Polaroid Time Zero Supercolor Prints, Anthony Zych

Theses

This paper discusses research on an automatic focusing system for IC-linewidth measuring instruments. The instrument incorporates a collimated light source, a device to move a sample in small, precise increments, and a charge-coupled device. The autofocusing model would measure the step-height to a focus position. Thickness of samples on an enlarged scale were measured to verify the feasibility of this device.

Automatic Differentiation: Implementation In The Ada Programming Language, Robert P. Herloski Jun 1987

Automatic Differentiation: Implementation In The Ada Programming Language, Robert P. Herloski

Theses

This thesis describes the characteristics of a novel computational technique called automatic differentiation, and gives an implementation of this technique in the Ada® programming language. Automatic differentiation is a technique with which one can directly calculate the value of any partial derivative of nearly any function that has been programmed into a computer (at any point of interest), without requiring the algebraic derivation of the desired partial derivative of the function of interest. It is closely related to the technique of power series manipulation, with which one can find, for example, the sum, product, square root, etc., of given power …

A Low-Noise Ccd Electrometer Using Buried-Channel Ldd Nmosfets, Eric G. Stevens Jun 1987

A Low-Noise Ccd Electrometer Using Buried-Channel Ldd Nmosfets, Eric G. Stevens

Theses

A iow-noise, CCD electrometer is presented that makes use of devices akin to buried-channel, LDD NMOS FETs. Self-aligned source and drain contacts are used that result in high performance and a simplified process. These devices were fabricated in a scaled, buried-channel NMOS CCD process without adding any process complexity. In spite of the higher capacitances associated with the scaled process (higher levels of doping and thinner gate oxides) in which this device was constructed, the input referred voltage responsivity or sensitivity of this electrometer is 15 /xV/electron, the highest reported to date. This high responsivity leads to superior noise performance. …

Design And Testing Of A Computer-Controlled Square Wave Voltammetry Instrument, Nancy L. Wengenack Jun 1987

Design And Testing Of A Computer-Controlled Square Wave Voltammetry Instrument, Nancy L. Wengenack

Theses

Square Wave Voltammetry is rapidly becoming the most popular and versatile electrochemical technique used in research laboratories today. A discussion of electroanalytical techniques, which are the forerunners to square wave voltammetry, provides a basis for understanding the theoretical and experimental aspects of SWV which are presented. A computer-controlled square wave voltammetry system was designed and built using an IBM PC computer, a Tecmar data acquisition board, an EG&G PARC Model 264A Polarographic Analyzer/Stripping Voltammeter, an EG&G PARC Model 303A Static Mercury Drop Electrode, and the scientific software package, ASYST. The system was tested by performing computer-controlled square wave voltammetry on …

An Investigation Of Quantification Of Image Quality With Respect To Screen Ruling On The Appearance Of Multicolor Print, Yi-Sheng Lu May 1987

An Investigation Of Quantification Of Image Quality With Respect To Screen Ruling On The Appearance Of Multicolor Print, Yi-Sheng Lu

Theses

Using a finer screen ruling will result in an improved final image quality in the color printing process. Studies have shown that beyond certain screen frequencies any further increase in the number of lines per inch has negligible benefit on multicolor process printing when using the half-tone printing precess. The objective of this research is to quantify the image quality of multicolor process printing by comparing the results of using several different screen rulings. The final image quality was subjectively evaluated based on the appearance of otherwise identical reproductions with the only difference being the screen ruling. The results of …

A Study Of The Discernibility Of Electrophotostatic Copied Typestyles As Compared With Non-Electrophotostatic Copied Typefaces, Laura A. Melchionne May 1987

A Study Of The Discernibility Of Electrophotostatic Copied Typestyles As Compared With Non-Electrophotostatic Copied Typefaces, Laura A. Melchionne

Theses

This paper reports the results of an investigation into the discernibility of seven typefaces when overlayed by 15 different gauges brought into contact with each type face. Discernibility was tested under two conditions; standard (original typeset words) and electrophotostatically copied (second generation copies of the original typeset words) . The question that this investigation was attempting to answer was whether or not certain typefaces are more discernible after electrophotostatic copying than other typefaces. The seven typefaces were chosen because they have a known aesthetic preference that can be catergorized in three groups; most preferred, inbetween and least pre ferred. Preference …

Characterization Of Ion Implanted Antimony, Michael J. Cumbo May 1987

Characterization Of Ion Implanted Antimony, Michael J. Cumbo

Theses

Ion implanted antimony (121Sb) is characterized as an n-type dopant in single crystal (100) oriented silicon. The required implantation equipment and critical parameters are discussed. The experimental procedures used in this study are presented along with the resulting data on dopant distribution and crystal damage annealing. The tradeoffs between antimony and arsenic, the more commonly used heavy n-type dopant, are examined from both a process end a device perspective. The context of this comparison is in applications that require a heavily doped layer beneath a thin deposit of epitaxial silicon. Results of a specific buried layer process characterization are included.

A Performance Comparison Between A Wide-Hinged Endpaper Construction And The Library Binding Institute Standard Endpaper Construction, Claudia Chaback May 1987

A Performance Comparison Between A Wide-Hinged Endpaper Construction And The Library Binding Institute Standard Endpaper Construction, Claudia Chaback

Theses

For the last fifty years , library binders have employed a standard endpaper construction for all of its bindings. Now, because of new binding techniques and the deterioration of paper some preservationists have placed a demand on library binders to develop an alternate endpaper construction. The purpose of this study was to determine the hinge strength and openability performance of the two most conmon library binding techniques, oversewing and Singer side sewing, which were flat backed and rounded/backed in relation to the currently used the LBI Standard endpaper as compared to the wide-hinged endpaper construction. It was questioned if there …
