Solid Modeling Interactive Interface For Design Drafting, Edward Maruggi Aug 1988

Solid Modeling Interactive Interface For Design Drafting, Edward Maruggi

Theses

Providing certain Solid Modeling software systems with Computer-Aided Design Drafting facilities allows these systems to produce industry acceptable engineering drawing displays. A method is put forth to provide these facilities through the design and implemention of a two-dimensional interactive graphics package that interfaces with these systems. This allows other graphical and textual elements to be added to displays produced by the Solid Modeling systems.

Viscoelastic Damping Of Beams, Mansour Messalti Aug 1988

Viscoelastic Damping Of Beams, Mansour Messalti

Theses

The composite damping characteristics of a viscoelastic sandwich beam are investigated. The sandwich consists of an elastic central layer coated on both sides with a viscoelastic material and two outer layers made out of the same material as the central layer. The composite beam is investigated for damping effectiveness. As in the work of DiTaranto and Kerwin, and also Mead, the energy dissipation due to the vibratory motion of the system is assumed to take place due to the shear deformation of the viscoelastic layer only. The assumption that the outer layers do not stretch or contract during bending, further …

Diagnosis Expert System With Automated Query To A Process Control System, Richard Winslow Jul 1988

Diagnosis Expert System With Automated Query To A Process Control System, Richard Winslow

Theses

This thesis describes the development of a diagnosis expert system for an automated process control facility. To reduce the number of user responses to the expert system, a network interface was created between the expert system and the process control computer. This document focuses on the unique concerns associated with the development, validation, and implementation of an expert system that is directly interfaced to a process control system.

Extraction Methods For Iodine From Crude Oil Systems For The Determination Of 129i/127i Ratios, Sharon Tullai Jul 1988

Extraction Methods For Iodine From Crude Oil Systems For The Determination Of 129i/127i Ratios, Sharon Tullai

Theses

129I/127I ratios were investigated as a potential for dating and tracing studies of crude oil systems. 129I/127I ratios were measured using a tandem accelerator mass spectrometer located at the University of Rochester. Carrier-free methods for AgI preparation are discussed for formation waters, petroleum, and source and reservoir rocks. Formation water extractions include the use of oxidizing and reducing agents to extract iodine into carbon tetrachloride. Samples prepared in this way gave good ratio measurements with no contamination. Two methods for iodine extraction from petroleum are employed. The first is a sodium biphenyl extraction which will extract up to 90% of …

Dbprolog: A Prolog/Relational Database Interface, Diane Oagley Jun 1988

Dbprolog: A Prolog/Relational Database Interface, Diane Oagley

Theses

dbProlog is a prototype system that provides a C-Prolog user access to data in an external relational database via both loose and tight coupling. To the application programmer, dbProlog is a group of six built-in Prolog predicates that effect communication between a C-Prolog process and a database management system process. Prolog application program statements may be written using the six predicates to make the interface transparent to an end-user. The system is based on a "driver" process that must be customized to the interfaced DBMS and whose primary function is the translation of requests and replies between C-Prolog and the …

A Window-Oriented User-Interface For Image Processing Systems On Unix Based Workstations., Sandeep Mehta Jun 1988

A Window-Oriented User-Interface For Image Processing Systems On Unix Based Workstations., Sandeep Mehta

Theses

The advent of digital image processing has led to the availability of a very large number of software systems. However there is an absence of a cohesive general-purpose image processing environment isolated from hardware or the underlying operating system. The trend in computing in science and engineering, is towards distributed workstations, especially with the availability of high-performance microprocessors. Hence there is a need for a unified software environment on workstations for use in scientific applications. This thesis describes the design and implementation of a window oriented user-interface. The interface runs on top of a Image Processing system, running on workstations …

Analytical Study Of The Aerodynamic Removal Of Small, Charged Particles From A Dielectric Surface, Carl Bothner Jun 1988

Analytical Study Of The Aerodynamic Removal Of Small, Charged Particles From A Dielectric Surface, Carl Bothner

Theses

The need to aerodynamically remove isolated charged particles 50 to 500 micrometers in size from a bed comprised of numerous smaller 10-15 micrometers size charged particles is identified. To facilitate accurate prediction for successful particle removal, a new analytical method is presented for determining the magnitude and location of the aerodynamic drag force acting on a spherical particle in a boundary layer flow. Wind tunnel experiments are conducted on spheres of 2 to 2.5 cm diameter in turbulent boundary layer flow for sphere Reynolds numbers on the order of 10,000. The experiments measure the drag force on the sphere and …

Design And Implementation Of A Simulator For A Local Area Network Utilizing An Ibm Pc/At Or Compatible Computer, Christian G. Midgley May 1988

Design And Implementation Of A Simulator For A Local Area Network Utilizing An Ibm Pc/At Or Compatible Computer, Christian G. Midgley

Theses

The purpose of this project is to provide a fixture which may be used as a local area network for a course similar to the Small Systems Workshop course (EECC756) as taught in the spring of 1986. This fixture will provide the physical layer of the local area network. This network would be Ethernet like but use an RS-232C communication between the fixture and the nodes. In addition to simulating the ether the fixture would provide for on-line analysis of the packets being sent to provide feedback to the student as well as the professor. The IBM PC/AT type personal …

The purpose of this study was to address, through colorimetric analysis, color variation as it relates to the efficiency of trapping. A developing awareness of colorimetric analysis in the graphic arts, as well as the realization of some of the limitations of densitometry when applied to color analysis provided impetus for such a study.

High-Performance Liquid Chromatographic Analysis Of Commonly Used Drugs, Gregg C. Hider May 1988

High-Performance Liquid Chromatographic Analysis Of Commonly Used Drugs, Gregg C. Hider

Theses

This research project had two major goals. Selected members of six groups of clinically useful drugs were obtained to develop and optimize reverse-phase isocratic high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLO separations using the Hewlett Packard Series 1090 M HPLC. All optimized methods displayed excellent resolution between compounds within a method. Each optimized drug assay developed, displayed good linearity and precision. The second and primary goal of this research project was to provide RIT with a teaching tool. These optimized separations were incorporated into six laboratory experiments, written in a format that RIT's undergraduate students of Medical Technology could easily follow and complete …

Information Theoretic Analysis Of Multi-Stage Communication/Imaging Systems, William O'Such Apr 1988

Information Theoretic Analysis Of Multi-Stage Communication/Imaging Systems, William O'Such

Theses

A method for the system analysis of a multistage photographic or communication system is developed. By following the input signal through the system and estimating the output signal and the output signal without noise, the information capacity after each stage can be estimated. The relationship between the variance and the integral of the power spectrum is used in accounting for the effects of each of the component characteristics: modulation transfer function, density-log exposure relationship and granularity. This method is implemented in a computer program which allows one to vary the characteristics of the components and determine the resultant changes in …
