Development Of A Low-Cost Eye Screening Tool For Early Detection Of Diabetic Retinopathy Using Deep Neural Network, David Mwanguo Mwasikira
Theses
It has been said that technology used in the lab does not directly transfer to what is done in healthcare. Research on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) has seen tremendous growth over the last couple of years but it is also true not much of that knowledge has been transferred into practice to benefit patients in need. One reason is that it’s a new frontier with untested technologies and one that is evolving too fast. Also, the Real Healthcare situation can be very complicated presenting itself with numerous challenges starting with strict …
Theory And Algorithms For Reliable Multimodal Data Analysis, Machine Learning, And Signal Processing, Dimitris G. Chachlakis
Theory And Algorithms For Reliable Multimodal Data Analysis, Machine Learning, And Signal Processing, Dimitris G. Chachlakis
Theses
Modern engineering systems collect large volumes of data measurements across diverse sensing modalities. These measurements can naturally be arranged in higher-order arrays of scalars which are commonly referred to as tensors. Tucker decomposition (TD) is a standard method for tensor analysis with applications in diverse fields of science and engineering. Despite its success, TD exhibits severe sensitivity against outliers —i.e., heavily corrupted entries that appear sporadically in modern datasets. We study L1-norm TD (L1-TD), a reformulation of TD that promotes robustness. For 3-way tensors, we show, for the first time, that L1-TD admits an exact solution via combinatorial optimization and …

Can Feature Requests Reveal The Refactoring Types?, Sultan Fahad Almassari
Theses
Software refactoring is the process of improving the design of a software system while preserving its external behavior. In recent years, refactoring research has been growing as a response to the degradation of software quality. Recent studies performed an in-depth investigation in (1) how refactoring practices are taking place during the software evolution, (2) how to recommend refactoring to improve the design of software, and (3) what type of refactoring operations can be implemented. However, there is a lack of support when it comes to developers’ typical programming tasks, including feature updates and bug fixes. The goal of this thesis …

Deep Learning Of Scene-Specific Classifier For Pedestrian Detection In Dubai, Abduljalil Alolama
Deep Learning Of Scene-Specific Classifier For Pedestrian Detection In Dubai, Abduljalil Alolama
Theses
The performance of a generic pedestrian detector varies based on the data fed to it; when applied to a specific scene, its performance degrades dramatically, which require the detector to be fed with the specific target in mind so that it can produce the desired predictions and detect for the user the specified target. In this paper, I propose to feed the automated specialization of a scene-specific pedestrian detector, with multiple sources from pictures to even videos beginning with a generic video surveillance detector, however manually marking samples to ease the process, as the knowledge accumulated from the master program …

Pedagogical Evaluation Of Cognitive Accessibility Learning Lab In The Classroom, Saad Khan
Pedagogical Evaluation Of Cognitive Accessibility Learning Lab In The Classroom, Saad Khan
Theses
In a study conducted by Webaim, 98.1% of sites had a detectable accessibility issue. This poses a profound challenge to the 1 billion users across the world who have a disability. This indicates that developers either are not aware of how to make the sites accessible or aware of how critical it is to make the sites usable by all users. This problem is further compounded by the lack of available resources that can educate students and future developers in making their software accessible. To address current limitations/challenges, we have developed an all-in-one immersive learning experience known as the Accessibility …
Automatic Speech Recognition For Low-Resource And Morphologically Complex Languages, Ethan Morris
Automatic Speech Recognition For Low-Resource And Morphologically Complex Languages, Ethan Morris
Theses
The application of deep neural networks to the task of acoustic modeling for automatic speech recognition (ASR) has resulted in dramatic decreases of word error rates, allowing for the use of this technology in smart phones and personal home assistants in high-resource languages. Developing ASR models of this caliber, however, requires hundreds or thousands of hours of transcribed speech recordings, which presents challenges for most of the world’s languages. In this work, we investigate the applicability of three distinct architectures that have previously been used for ASR in languages with limited training resources. We tested these architectures using publicly available …

Computational Design, Simulation Of Meshing, And Stress Analysis Of Strain Wave Gear Drives, Eloy Yague-Spaude
Computational Design, Simulation Of Meshing, And Stress Analysis Of Strain Wave Gear Drives, Eloy Yague-Spaude
Theses
Strain wave gear (SWG) drives were patented in 1959 by C. Walton Musser as a coaxial, compact, and lightweight gear drive providing remarkably large gear ratios without backlash. This outstanding performance requires the use of a flexible gear, as well as a meshing process with two regions of tooth contact as opposed to traditional gear drives, which only mesh in a single region. The latter drives have been studied for centuries under the principles of solid mechanics whereas SWG drives lack strong bodies of literature, principles, and computational tools for their design.
SWG drives include three parts: wave generator, flexible …

A safe and comfortable outdoor travel experience could not only increase the safety and fun of travel but …
A Dynamic Programming Approach To Determine Optimum Modularity Level In Industrial Packaging, Marshal Louie, Kumar B
A Dynamic Programming Approach To Determine Optimum Modularity Level In Industrial Packaging, Marshal Louie, Kumar B
Journal of Applied Packaging Research
Modular packaging facilitate customization for accommodating variable product sizes in a product family. When determining package sizes for product variability, packaging engineers does not find difficulty to determine package dimension for less product variety whereas if the product variety is more, then determining the dimension of modular package involves complex decision-making and time-consuming process to find the optimal solution. This in turn directly impacts the overall lead time of the supply chain. Thus, in this paper a dynamic programming is developed to determine the quantity and dimension of modular packages for every demand of assorted products sizes. The program helps …

Daniel: Towards Automated Bug Discovery By Black Box Test Case Generation & Recommendation, Michael G. Peechatt
Theses
Finding and documenting bugs in software systems is an essential component of the software development process. A bug is defined as a series of steps that produces behavior which differs from the software specification and requirements. Finding steps to produce such behavior requires expert knowledge of the possible operations of the software in development as well as intuition and creativity. This thesis proposes the Directed Action Node Input Execution Language (DANIEL), a language that represents test cases as directed graphs, where each node represents an action, and possible input arguments for each action are represented along the incoming directed edges. …

Architecting A One-To-Many Traffic-Aware And Secure Millimeter-Wave Wireless Network-In-Package Interconnect For Multichip Systems, M Meraj Ahmed
Architecting A One-To-Many Traffic-Aware And Secure Millimeter-Wave Wireless Network-In-Package Interconnect For Multichip Systems, M Meraj Ahmed
Theses
With the aggressive scaling of device geometries, the yield of complex Multi Core Single Chip(MCSC) systems with many cores will decrease due to the higher probability of manufacturing defects especially, in dies with a large area. Disintegration of large System-on-Chips(SoCs) into smaller chips called chiplets has shown to improve the yield and cost of complex systems. Therefore, platform-based computing modules such as embedded systems and micro-servers have already adopted Multi Core Multi Chip (MCMC) architectures overMCSC architectures. Due to the scaling of memory intensive parallel applications in such systems, data is more likely to be shared among various cores residing …

Air Injection In A Pseudo Boiling System, Saikat Das
Theses
The continuous development of microelectronic industry and miniaturization of microchips has led to a demand for large amount of heat removal from their surface. Conventional cooling systems are unable to extract such large amount of heat and thus necessitating efficient thermal management. Pool Boiling provides a highly efficient way to remove high heat at low wall superheats. Enhancement of heat transfer by pool boiling will result in reduced size and better efficiency of the device. The current research work focuses on the application of enhanced heat removal technique by macro-convection mechanism using an air injection system. Air injection through the …

Learning With Limited Labeled Data In Biomedical Domain By Disentanglement And Semi-Supervised Learning, Prashnna Kumar Gyawali
Learning With Limited Labeled Data In Biomedical Domain By Disentanglement And Semi-Supervised Learning, Prashnna Kumar Gyawali
Theses
In this dissertation, we are interested in improving the generalization of deep neural networks for biomedical data (e.g., electrocardiogram signal, x-ray images, etc). Although deep neural networks have attained state-of-the-art performance and, thus, deployment across a variety of domains, similar performance in the clinical setting remains challenging due to its ineptness to generalize across unseen data (e.g., new patient cohort).
We address this challenge of generalization in the deep neural network from two perspectives: 1) learning disentangled representations from the deep network, and 2) developing efficient semi-supervised learning (SSL) algorithms using the deep network.
In the former, we are interested …
Expo 2020 Positive & Negative Sentiment, Tariq Albehandy
Expo 2020 Positive & Negative Sentiment, Tariq Albehandy
Theses
Sentiment analysis is the progression of detecting positive or negative sentiment in text. It’s often used by businesses to detect sentiment in social data, gauge brand reputation, and understand customers. Since customers express their thoughts and feelings more openly than ever before, sentiment analysis is becoming an important tool to monitor and understand that sentiment. Inevitably analyzing customer feedback, such as opinions in survey responses and social media conversations, allows brands to learn what makes customers happy or frustrated, so that they can tailor products and services to meet their customers’ needs. For example, using sentiment analysis to automatically analyze …
Generation, Verification, And Attacks On Elliptic Curves And Their Applications In Signal Protocol, Tanay Pramod Dusane
Generation, Verification, And Attacks On Elliptic Curves And Their Applications In Signal Protocol, Tanay Pramod Dusane
Theses
Elliptic curves (EC) are widely studied due to their mathematical and cryptographic properties. Cryptographers have used the properties of EC to construct elliptic curve cryptosystems (ECC). ECC are based on the assumption of hardness of special instances of the discrete logarithm problem in EC. One of the strong merits of ECC is providing the same cryptographic strength with smaller key size compared to other public key cryptosystems. A 256 bit ECC can provide similar cryptographic strength as a 3072 bit RSA cryptosystem. Due to smaller key sizes, elliptic curves are an attractive option in devices with limited storage capacity. It …

Articles
We consider the time-dependent response of a gravitationally thinning inviscid liquid sheet (a coating curtain) leaving a vertical slot to sinusoidal ambient pressure disturbances. The theoretical investigation employs the hyperbolic partial differential equation developed by Weinstein et al. (Phys. Fluids, vol. 9, issue 12, 1997, pp. 3625–3636). The response of the curtain is characterized by the slot Weber number, We0=ρqV/2σ" role="presentation" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: normal; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; display: inline-table; word-spacing: normal; overflow-wrap: normal; white-space: nowrap; float: none; direction: ltr; max-width: none; max-height: none; min-width: 0px; min-height: 0px; position: …
Restriction Of Placing Certain Single-Use Plastic Products On The Hungarian Market, Anita Boros
Restriction Of Placing Certain Single-Use Plastic Products On The Hungarian Market, Anita Boros
Journal of Environmental Sustainability
One of the means of rationalizing Hungarian waste management -in the context of the waste hierarchy- is to increase the rate of waste recycling and reprocessing. Although the Hungarian plastics industry is a very dynamically developing area, the Hungarian legislator has also recognized that the use of certain products is extremely harmful in the long run. Accordingly, stricter measures than the EU directive have been taken and accordingly a number of single-use plastic products from July 2021 are to be banned. In addition, in the case of plastic carrier bags, economic tools have been developed and further improved, which, according …

Landlords Of The Digital World: How Territoriality And Social Identity Predict Playing Intensity In Location-Based Games, Samuli Laato, Bastian Kordyaka, A.K.M. Najmul Islam, Konstantinos Papangelis
Presentations and other scholarship
Popular location-based games (LBGs) such as Pokemon GO have been downloaded hundreds of millions of times and have been shown to have a positive impact on mild exercise and social well-being of their players. Several currently popular LBGs introduce a gamified implementation of territorial conflict, where players are divided into teams that battle for the ownership of geographically distributed points of interest. We investigate how social factors and territoriality influence playing intensity in the context of Pok´emon GO. Using reasoning from social identity theory, we propose a structural model connecting territoriality, sociality and playing intensity. To test the model, we …

This paper presents an ensemble part-of-speech tagging approach for source code identifiers. Ensemble tagging is a technique that uses machine-learning and the output from multiple part-of-speech taggers to annotate natural language text at a higher quality than the part-of-speech taggers are able to obtain independently. Our ensemble uses three state-of-the-art part-of-speech taggers: SWUM, POSSE, and Stanford. We study the quality of the ensemble's annotations on five different types of identifier names: function, class, attribute, parameter, and declaration statement at the level of both individual words and full identifier names. We also study and discuss the weaknesses of our tagger to …
