Fluid, Ben Dombey Jun 2013

Fluid, Ben Dombey

Theses

For my thesis body of work, I created sculptures comprised of glass and other components. Through material explorations, trial and error, and experimentation, I further developed my sensibilities toward glass. By stretching, curving, stacking, and encasing glass, the resulting sculptures are abstract and self-referential. Through the process of creating, I made many discoveries. I hope viewers will connect with the work and create their own dialogue amongst the sculptures. Experimentation and trial and error were key to the body of work. Implementing my knowledge of glass and the successes of previous attempts, I created controlled scenarios to manipulate glass. Once …

Numerical Identification Of A Variable Parameter In 2d Elliptic Boundary Value Problem By Extragradient Methods, Selin Sariaydin Jun 2013

Numerical Identification Of A Variable Parameter In 2d Elliptic Boundary Value Problem By Extragradient Methods, Selin Sariaydin

Theses

This work focuses on the inverse problem of identifying a variable parameter in a 2-D scalar elliptic boundary value problem. It is well-known that this inverse problem is highly ill-posed and regularization is necessary for its stable solution. The inverse problem is studied in an optimization framework, which is the most suitable framework for incorporating regularization. This optimization problem is a constrained optimization problem where the constraint set is a closed and convex set of the admissible coefficients. As an objective functional, we use both the output least squares and modified output least squares functionals. It is known that the …

A Graph Theoretic Approach To Quantifying Grey Matter Volume In Neuroimaging, Ashley Zanca Jun 2013

A Graph Theoretic Approach To Quantifying Grey Matter Volume In Neuroimaging, Ashley Zanca

Theses

Brain atrophy occurs as a symptom of many diseases. The software package, Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) is one of the most respected and commonly used tools in the neuroimaging community for quantifying the amount of grey matter (GM) in the brain based on magnetic resonance (MR) images. One aspect of quantifying GM volume is to identify, or segment, regions of the brain image corresponding to grey matter. A recent trend in the field of image segmentation is to model an image as a graph composed of vertices and edges, and then to "cut" the graph into subgraphs corresponding to different …

Abstract: In the fall of 2010, faculty in the School of Interactive Games & Media at the Rochester Institute of Technology began the initial planning for an achievement system meant to recognize and reward student engagement in non-curricular activities—specifically activities that successful graduates of the program regularly cited as significant factors in their undergraduate experience. This paper describes the design process used to create the initial version of the Just Press Play system, the results of the implementation during the 2011-12 academic year, and the significant redesign of the system that took place based on assessment of the first year …

Calibration For Real-Time Non-Invasive Blood Glucose Monitoring, Matthew Sidley Jun 2013

Calibration For Real-Time Non-Invasive Blood Glucose Monitoring, Matthew Sidley

Theses

Blood glucose monitoring is a primary tool for the care of diabetic patients. At present there is no non-invasive monitoring technique of blood glucose concentration that is widely accepted in the medical industry. Some promising success has been shown by the RIT ETA Lab research group that an antenna's resonant frequency can track, in real time, changes in glucose concentration. However, these changes in antenna response would be unique to an individual depending on various parameters such as the person's metabolism, body mass index, chemical profile etc. Therefore, amongst the several issues that still need to be addressed in the …

Designing Pictorial Stimuli For Perceptual Image Difference Experiments, Susan Farnand Jun 2013

Designing Pictorial Stimuli For Perceptual Image Difference Experiments, Susan Farnand

Theses

Imaging system development often involves impact assessment of design choices. For systems that generate images for human consumption, such as cameras and displays, the effect of design decisions are often evaluated using `real-world' images. System changes can have complicated effects on pictorial images that do not, as yet, have specified instrumental measurement methods. Consequently, human observers are often used in image quality assessment. However, human observers can react differently to complex pictorial stimuli both between observers and for a single observer over the course of a lengthy experiment. In an experimental setting, pictorial scenes present a greater opportunity than do …

Our research study revealed TouchPad as the most natural remote control.

Sustainability Impact Of Nanomaterial Enhanced Lithium Ion Batteries, Matthew Ganter Jun 2013

Sustainability Impact Of Nanomaterial Enhanced Lithium Ion Batteries, Matthew Ganter

Theses

Energy storage devices are becoming an integral part of sustainable energy technology adoption, particularly, in alternative transportation (electric vehicles) and renewable energy technologies (solar and wind which are intermittent). The most prevalent technology exhibiting near-term impact are lithium ion batteries, especially in portable consumer electronics and initial electric vehicle models like the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf. However, new technologies need to consider the full life-cycle impacts from material production and use phase performance to the end-of-life management (EOL). This dissertation investigates the impacts of nanomaterials in lithium ion batteries throughout the life cycle and develops strategies to improve each …

Control Of Invasive Typha Spp. In A Restored Freshwater Wetland, Kathryn Boa Jun 2013

Control Of Invasive Typha Spp. In A Restored Freshwater Wetland, Kathryn Boa

Theses

Wetlands are critically important habitats that provide many ecosystem services but loss and degradation of wetland habitat and functions has led to the growing need to create and restore functionally sound wetlands. In temperate climates, Typha spp. are an invasive plant genus that is problematic for mitigation efforts as it spreads quickly and aggressively into disturbed habitats and creates monotypic stands with dense rhizomes that are difficult to eradicate. Control is most often attempted through mechanical cutting or application of herbicide. In this study I surveyed four mitigation wetland vegetation communities in two years to determine species distribution and change …

Integration Technologies For Implantable Microsystems, Dean Johnson Jun 2013

Integration Technologies For Implantable Microsystems, Dean Johnson

Theses

Microsystems targeted for implantation require careful consideration of power, thermals, size, reliability, and biocompatibility. The presented research explored appropriate integration technologies for an implantable drug delivery system suitable for use in mice weighing less than 20 grams. Microsystems technology advancements include in situ pump diaphragm formation; integrated, low volume microfluidic coupling technologies; and incorporation of a low voltage, low-power pump actuation with a zero-power off state. Utility of the developed integration technologies have been tested through in vitro reliability and validation experiments. A Context-Based Framework For Mobile Applications, Omkar Kolangade Jun 2013

A Context-Based Framework For Mobile Applications, Omkar Kolangade

Theses

Mobile applications have become commonplace in the past few years. In domains such as healthcare, app user experience becomes even more critical. If healthcare apps are not user friendly, patients simply stop using them, or worse still, they may use these apps with disastrous consequences. One approach to improving app user experience is to keep track of mobile context, which is any information that can be used to characterize the situation of an entity, where an entity can be a person, place, or object. In this thesis, a system was designed using the following features. Relevant, context-based alerts are provided …

Dreams And Memories, Sarah Arditti Jun 2013

Dreams And Memories, Sarah Arditti

Theses

In this document I analyze my work, process, and the success or failure of each piece in a body of artwork completed for the Masters of Fine Arts in Fine Arts Studio at Rochester Institute of Technology. My artwork explores personal dreams and memories through experimentation with material, color, technique and form. The works, a combination of paintings and objects, are each connected to a dream or memory and convey a paradox between reality versus illusion, or a sense of detachment from the real world.

Mimicking Mesh Refinement To Construct Initial Data For A Binary Black Hole System, Bradley James Jun 2013

Mimicking Mesh Refinement To Construct Initial Data For A Binary Black Hole System, Bradley James

Theses

In order to perform an evolutionary calculation in General Relativity, accurate initial data is needed. A pseudospectral numerical method to solve both linear and nonlinear ordinary differential equations is introduced. We then calculate solutions to the Hamiltonian and momentum constraints for a binary black hole system utilizing such a pseudospectral method. The error resulting from the implementation is discussed at three locations in space: near the black holes, far from the black holes, and in between. A method to mimic mesh refinement through appropriate coordinate transforms is introduced with the result of lowering the maximum error in the system.

Http Man-In-The-Middle Code Execution, Brian Adeloye May 2013

Http Man-In-The-Middle Code Execution, Brian Adeloye

Theses

As the Internet continues to mature, users are faced with an increasingly hostile environment on the World Wide Web. Additionally, public WiFi networks continue to become more popular, hackers infiltrate corporate networks with regularity, and oppressive governments continue to intercept and modify their citizens' web traffic. The concept of using an untrusted network is becoming more familiar. Accordingly, it is no longer acceptable to design and build systems under the assumption that they will only operate in trusted environments, or that they are not important enough to warrant basic security measures. This thesis describes a relatively basic HTTP man-in-the-middle attack …

Lady Bits, Kristina Starr May 2013

Lady Bits, Kristina Starr

Theses

In this thesis, the focus is on issues of identity, feminism, notions of beauty, the gendered body, and performance. I created an alter ego Lily de L'Etoile based on the Jewish Mythology of Lilith, to act as the performer in this work. Through the use of photography, video and performance I explore the notion that one's identity is formed and affected by outside factors, such as the media, and pop culture. I look at how these outside factors affect one's self-perception and permeate our lives. Key artists discussed in dialog with this work are Joan Jonas, Cindy Sherman, Libby Rowe, …

Allegories Through Material, Ian Bassett May 2013

Allegories Through Material, Ian Bassett

Theses

Through my experience I have found that all things have a function. I am particularly drawn to the utilitarian object and it's ability to transform the world around us. Nails, bricks, writing quills and various other functional objects have had a profound affect on the development of humans. These objects, which were created out of need, have propelled humans on an evolutionary process allowing for mechanical advantages, that then allow for growth. The utilitarian object has the ability, through symbol and metaphor, to articulate my personal interests in words, language, labor, time, perceptions, and value. I am re-interpreting and re-contextualizing …

Sobject, Lloyd Warren Iii May 2013

Sobject, Lloyd Warren Iii

Theses

Attempting to find a solution to the problem of how to make art that is both critical yet participatory, sobject explores subject/object relations within the development of the medical gaze in the history of medico-clinical perception and Modern Art. Sobject works both analytically, tracing these apparently parallel developments, and synthetically as it forms a methodological approach from the interpolating spaces of each. It locates and analyzes histories of objective instrumentation between subjects and objects, then works to open and redistribute these into new possibilities. It does this by developing an artistic practice that engages with contemporary forms of institutionalized instrumentation, …

Systems Evaluation For Computer Graphics Rendering Of The Total Appearance Of Paintings, Lin Chen May 2013

Systems Evaluation For Computer Graphics Rendering Of The Total Appearance Of Paintings, Lin Chen

Theses

One of the challenges when imaging paintings is recording total appearance, that is, the object's color, surface microstructure (gloss), and surface macrostructure (topography). In this thesis, various systems were used to achieve this task, and a psychophysical paired comparison experiment was conducted to evaluate their performance. A pair of strobe lights arranged at 60° from the normal on either side of the painting captured color information where the strobes produced either directional or diffuse illumination geometry. By adding a third strobe, arranging them 120° apart annularly, and cross polarizing, diffuse color and surface normal maps were measured. A fourth strobe …

Deconstruction In Nature, Joseph Tarantelli May 2013

Deconstruction In Nature, Joseph Tarantelli

Theses

This paper describes the development of the artwork I created for my Thesis exhibition for an MFA in Fine Arts Studio at Rochester Institute of Technology. My initial inspiration to create came from the landscape. After finding a local scene that showed the growth of life in nature, I would paint the scene outside, or inside using a photo reference. In the winter of 2010, I used warm brown under paintings to contrast the subsequent layers of paint needed to depict the cold climate. As I painted, I worked to convey a unique interpretation of nature. The palette knife allowed …

Thermal & Electrical Simulation For The Development Of Solid-Phase Polycrystalline Silicon Tfts, Seth Slavin May 2013

Thermal & Electrical Simulation For The Development Of Solid-Phase Polycrystalline Silicon Tfts, Seth Slavin

Theses

Solid phase crystallization (SPC) is a processing technique used for conversion of amorphous silicon (a-Si) to polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si). SPC can potentially be used as an alternative to excimer laser annealing to fabricate the semiconductor layer for thin-film transistors (TFTs) in active-matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD). It is a technique suitable for large-area applications since it involves easily scalable thermal processes in the form of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) and furnace annealing (FA). The SPC parameter space involves the time and temperature of the FA, and the time, temperature, and number of pulses in the RTA process. In developing new …

Living Fossil, Ben Gilberg May 2013

Living Fossil, Ben Gilberg

Theses

Living Fossil is a series of still lifes and portraits exploring the language of photography with curiosity and play, formal vision and descriptive candor. It looks at the speculative of materiality and spectacle in image making. This series prescribes new functionality to familiar subjects, challenging a viewer's perceptions of scale, time, significance and artfulness. The photographs document improvised temporal combinations in the construction of narrative and visual puns. Depicting the ordinary in an unfamiliar way, this series looks for beauty in indeterminacy and moments of personal catharsis in the absurd.

Using Word And Phrase Abbreviation Patterns To Extract Age From Twitter Microtexts, Nathaniel Moseley May 2013

Using Word And Phrase Abbreviation Patterns To Extract Age From Twitter Microtexts, Nathaniel Moseley

Theses

The wealth of texts available publicly online for analysis is ever increasing. Much work in computational linguistics focuses on syntactic, contextual, morphological and phonetic analysis on written documents, vocal recordings, or texts on the internet. Twitter messages present a unique challenge for computational linguistic analysis due to their constrained size. The constraint of 140 characters often prompts users to abbreviate words and phrases. Additionally, as an informal writing medium, messages are not expected to adhere to grammatically or orthographically standard English. As such, Twitter messages are noisy and do not necessarily conform to standard writing conventions of linguistic corpora, often …

A Comparison Of Wide Area Network Performance Using Virtualized And Non-Virtualized Client Architectures, John Gustafson May 2013

A Comparison Of Wide Area Network Performance Using Virtualized And Non-Virtualized Client Architectures, John Gustafson

Theses

The goal of this thesis is to determine if there is a significant performance difference between two network computer architecture models. The study will measure latency and throughput for both client-server and virtualized client architectures. In the client server environment, the client computer performs a significant portion of the work and frequently requires downloading uploading files to and from a remote location. Virtual client architecture turns the client machine into a terminal, sending only keystrokes and mouse clicks and receiving only display pixel or sound changes. I accomplished the goal of comparing these architectures by comparing completion times for ping …
