Best Practices For Conducting Evaluations Of Sign Language Animation, Matt Huenerfauth, Hernisa Kacorri
Best Practices For Conducting Evaluations Of Sign Language Animation, Matt Huenerfauth, Hernisa Kacorri
Articles
Automatic synthesis of linguistically accurate and natural-looking American Sign Language (ASL) animations would make it easier to add ASL content to websites and media, thereby increasing information accessibility for many people who are deaf. Based on several years of studies, we identify best practices for conducting experimental evaluations of sign language animations with feedback from deaf and hard-of-hearing users. First, we describe our techniques for identifying and screening participants, and for controlling the experimental environment. Finally, we discuss rigorous methodological research on how experiment design affects study outcomes when evaluating sign language animations. Our discussion focuses on stimuli design, effect …
The Effect Of Oba In Paper And Illumination Level On Perceptibility Of Printed Colors, Robert Chung, Changlong Yu, Bruce Myers
The Effect Of Oba In Paper And Illumination Level On Perceptibility Of Printed Colors, Robert Chung, Changlong Yu, Bruce Myers
Presentations and other scholarship
A research was conducted to study the perceptibility of color difference of color pairs, caused by OBA differences in paper substrates, and its relationship with quantitative measurement metrics. Based on the psychometric experiments conducted, the results show the utilization of the visual difference index (VDI), from 0 (no difference) to 3 (noticeable difference), to rate 27 color pairs with each pair prepared by the same colorants but different OBA amount in the substrates. The findings indicate that (a) printed colors are affected by the presence of OBA from no difference to noticeable difference, (b) ∆E00 has a stronger linear correlation …
An Investigation Of Factors Influencing Color Tolerances, Robert Chung, Lufei Yu, Bruce Myers
An Investigation Of Factors Influencing Color Tolerances, Robert Chung, Lufei Yu, Bruce Myers
Presentations and other scholarship
Tolerance is the permissible difference between sample measurement and the aim and is used to determine the acceptability of a product. A well-known example is the color tolerance of printed solids in ISO 12647-2. The first edition of ISO 12647-2 was published in 1996. It has gone through two major revisions. In the 2004 revision, the magnitude of the color tolerance (∆E*ab) was changed. In the 2013 revision, a new color tolerance metric (∆E00) was included. No justification was found regarding the ISO 12647-2 revisions. In this research, %Pass is used to study the effect of color tolerance in a …
Matching Printed Color Images Under The Influence Of Oba Using A Soft Proofing System, Robert Chung, Peng Cheng, Bruce Myers
Matching Printed Color Images Under The Influence Of Oba Using A Soft Proofing System, Robert Chung, Peng Cheng, Bruce Myers
Presentations and other scholarship
Soft proofing is a solution for print buyers and printers who want to decrease production cost and cycle time. When print buyers are increasingly specifying brightened papers, the use of the standard printer ICC profile, e.g., SWOP 3 and GRACoL 2006, as the source color space in the ICC-based color proofing workflow, no longer suffice. This is because the proof looks yellowish in comparison to the brightened print with a bluish white point that print buyers desire. To overcome the mismatch between the soft proof and the brightened print, this research builds a number of source ICC profiles, including profiles …
An Analysis Of M0 And M1 Measurement Conditions, Bruce Myers, Rachel Silvestrini
An Analysis Of M0 And M1 Measurement Conditions, Bruce Myers, Rachel Silvestrini
Presentations and other scholarship
The increased use of optical brightening agents (OBAs) in substrates for printing is well documented, as are the complications surrounding spectrophotometric color measurement when OBAs are present. In an effort to better address measurement of OBAs, the International Standards Organization (ISO) has published ISO 13566:2009, where the illuminations utilized in spectrophotometric instrumentation is more clearly defined than in previous standards. It is recognized that moving ahead the illuminant utilized in spectrophotometers should be able to better correlate to standardized viewing conditions, including the amount of ultra-violet (UV) present in the illuminant, as the effect of the OBAs is dependent on …

Capturing The Effects Of Public Opinion Polls On Voter Support In The Ny 25th Congressional Election, Heather Knappen
Capturing The Effects Of Public Opinion Polls On Voter Support In The Ny 25th Congressional Election, Heather Knappen
Theses
This thesis explores the relationship between public opinion polls and voter support and asks whether exposure to a public opinion poll creates an unfair advantage for the candidate winning in that poll. The experimental results from this study were used to test the hypothesis that exposure to an opinion poll, with a wide lead for one of two candidates, would cause voter support to increase for the candidate who was leading in the poll (i.e. a bandwagon effect). In 2012, a random sample of 101 registered voters in the NY 25th Congressional District participated in two telephone surveys. In each …

How Disgust Affects Romantic Attraction: How Our Moods Affect Our Judgments Of Attractiveness, Nicholas Phelan
How Disgust Affects Romantic Attraction: How Our Moods Affect Our Judgments Of Attractiveness, Nicholas Phelan
Theses
Facial attractiveness is an important part of our initial judgments of people and in our ability to determine their compatibility as a mating partner. Just as mating is evolutionarily important, the emotion disgust is one of the most evolutionarily beneficial emotions as it helps keep us away from poisonous and possibly infectious substances or foods. We instinctively avoid people with facial scars and other facial deformities because these are seen as a sign of illness or generally poor well-being. Facial attraction is one component of how we choose a mate. The current experiment examined whether or not being disgusted created …

I'M Listening With Dabdoop: A Phonological Stimulation App For Arabic Preschoolers, Manal Alyaba
I'M Listening With Dabdoop: A Phonological Stimulation App For Arabic Preschoolers, Manal Alyaba
Theses
Recognizing the sounds around us is the first step humans take to develop reading skills. Children who are at risk of dyslexia have a weakness in differentiating between sounds that make up our language. Testing for phonological awareness, a crucial part of reading development, can aid in detecting dyslexia. English speaking children have the luxury of being able to access varied programs designed to promote phonological awareness, knowledge of which, in turn, can assist as an early intervention instrument for dyslexia. In Saudi Arabia there are no programs that exist to detect dyslexia in children at an early age. The …

Investigating technologies and writing expansive documentation on their capabilities is like hitting a moving target. Technology is evolving, growing, and expanding what it can do each and every day. This makes it very difficult when trying to snap a line and investigate competing technologies. Storage virtualization is one of those moving targets. Large corporations develop software and hardware solutions that try to one up the competition by releasing firmware and patch updates to include their latest developments. Some of their latest innovations include differing RAID levels, virtualized storage, data compression, data deduplication, file deduplication, thin provisioning, new file system types, …
Temporal Signature Modeling And Analysis, Jiangqin Sun
Temporal Signature Modeling And Analysis, Jiangqin Sun
Theses
A vast amount of digital satellite and aerial images are collected over time, which calls for techniques to extract useful high-level information, such as recognizable events. One part of this thesis proposes a framework for streaming analysis of the time series, which can recognize events without supervision and memorize them by building the temporal contexts. The memorized historical data is then used to predict the future and detect anomalies. A new incremental clustering method is proposed to recognize the event without training. A memorization method of double localization, including relative and absolute localization, is proposed to model the temporal context. …

Color Managing For Papers Containing Optical Brightening Agents, R. Scott Millward
Color Managing For Papers Containing Optical Brightening Agents, R. Scott Millward
Theses
The role of a color-managed inkjet proof is to predict and simulate the visual appearance of printed color. The proof-to-print visual match works well under different viewing conditions when the input ICC profile and the output ICC profile, built from characterization datasets, do not contain optical brightening agents (OBA).
OBAs influence printed color when measured for characterization and viewed. These brightening agents absorb UV wavelengths in the illuminant and fluoresce in the blue wavelengths. As more and more OBAs are used in printing paper production, the role of color proofing becomes more difficult. The difference in the amount of the …

Proof-To-Print Match: Effectiveness Of Substrate-Corrected Colorimetric Aims In Soft Proofing, Peng Cheng
Proof-To-Print Match: Effectiveness Of Substrate-Corrected Colorimetric Aims In Soft Proofing, Peng Cheng
Theses
Soft proofing is an effective solution for clients and printers that decreases production cost and cycle time. However, print buyers are increasingly specifying brighter papers, which contain optical brightening agents (OBAs). One potential concern facing adopters of soft proofing systems is that they fail to consider the influence of OBA when rendering color images. Proofing systems are largely based on existing published specifications and their ICC profiles. These specifications and ICC profiles -- such as SWOP 3 and GRACoL 2006-- do not account for the influence of OBA-loaded printing papers, and therefore could cause a mismatch between the soft proof …
