Improving The Graphical User Interface (Gui) For The Dynamic Feedback Signal Set (Dyfss): Increasing Accessibility For The Neurodiverse, Daniel M. Hicks, Eric T. Hunt, Lindsay M. Alvut, Anna E. Hope, Laurence I. Sugarman

Annual Effective Access Technology Conference

Peripheral biofeedback is an explicit learning tool

that allows for real-time evaluation and control of physiological

proxies by means of computerized signals. Its integration into

health practice allows users to calibrate self-awareness and self regulation

then apply these skills to everyday life. People with

neurodevelopmental differences encounter limitations when

using commercially available clinical biofeedback due to

variation in their autonomic response. Principles of Universal

Design dictate that biofeedback inputs and displays allow

effective access and benefit for as many individuals as possible.

Our Dynamic Feedback Signal Set (DyFSS, nonprovisional

patent-in-process) algorithm adjusts signal processing by

dynamically weighting feedback signals to …

Plomar: An Ontology Framework For Context Modeling And Reasoning On Crowd-Sensing Platforms, Yogesh Jagadeesan, Peizhao Hu, Carlos Rivero

Presentations and other scholarship

Crowd-sensing is a popular way to sense and collect data using smartphones that reveals user behaviors and their correlations with device performance. PhoneLab is one of the largest crowd-sensing platform based on the Android system. Through experimental instrumentations and system modifications, researchers can tap into a sea of insightful information that can be further processed to reveal valuable context information about the device, user and the environment. However, the PhoneLab data is in JSON format. The process of inferring reasons from data in this format is not straightforward. In this paper, we introduce PLOMaR — an ontology framework that uses …

Eyetracking Metrics Related To Subjective Assessments Of Asl Animations, Matt Huenerfauth, Hernisa Kacorri

Presentations and other scholarship

Analysis of eyetracking data can serve as an alternative method of evaluation when assessing the quality of computer-synthesized animations of American Sign Language (ASL), technology which can make information accessible to people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, who may have lower levels of written language literacy. In this work, we build and evaluate the efficacy of descriptive models of subjective scores that native signers assign to ASL animations, based on eye-tracking metrics.

Metrology For 3d Printing: Assessing Methods For The Evaluation Of 3d Printing Products, Bruce Leigh Myers, Shu Chang

Presentations and other scholarship

The three-dimensional (3D) printing industry projected to be $67.4 billion in 2015, double from the 2010 value, and this it is expected to grow to nearly $108 billion by 2020 (Blum & Smithers-PIRA 2105). As 3D printing technologies are frequently used to manufacture interchangeable parts and for applications such as rapid prototyping, it is little surprise that a growing body of research has examined the accuracy of these devices (e.g. Ostrout, 2015). It is customary for these studies to utilize digital microscopes together with appropriate imaging software to analyze and quantify the unique nature of 3D printed samples. It is …

Thermo-Analytical Technique To Analize The Quality Of Paper For Packaging, Peter Borocz, Renáta Pidl, Barnabás Tóth

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

To identify the suitable paper quality for packaging structures is an element process in the packaging industry. Though the testing of paper based packaging has got difficulty. The testing methods such as CCT, RCT, FCT, COBB, bursting etc. are supported by statistical technique and do not provide accurate results. The reason is the deviation of testing results. The same problem can be defined at the classification of different paper materials and qualities. This paper describes a new possible testing method to analyze the chemical and thermo-analytical nature of papers. This method can be used to specify effectively the limits of …

Personalities Of The Chinese Zodiac, Tang-Hsuan Liu Feb 2016

Personalities Of The Chinese Zodiac, Tang-Hsuan Liu

Theses

3D animation has been trending for many years now. Many stories and the characters in those stories are being re-designed and represented by 3D.

Stories I grew up with in Taiwan are so different from those popular in Western culture. While I enjoyed Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Mickey Mouse, I also loved many classic Chinese stories, one of them being that of the Chinese Zodiac.

This story is about animals having a race to decide who will be the only 12 animals that represent each year. They are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, chicken, dog …

Oh Deer! Analyzing The Impact Of Rit Expansion And Development On White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) And Vehicle Collisions From 1993-2014, Gina De Naples

Theses

Increases in both human and deer populations, combined with habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, and decreased predation, have led to increases in deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs). The development of RIT over the past 20 years mimics typical urban/suburban development patterns, with documented deer-vehicle collisions. This research examines deer-vehicle collisions in regards to campus development, notably Park Point, to determine whether collisions are increasing or decreasing and to evaluate landscape variables that might be contributing factors. Data from 1993-2014, contributed by the RIT Campus Safety Office and the Monroe County Sheriff Office are modelled using ArcGIS software. This research builds on a previous …

Visualization Of Hiv-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders, Tim Fitzgerald Jan 2016

Visualization Of Hiv-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders, Tim Fitzgerald

Theses

It is widely known that human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) can cause acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), but treatments to prevent the virus from escalating to that severity have come a long way since the virus was first described in the 1980s. The medications, combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), keep the virus from replicating, thus stopping its progression to AIDS. However, this treatment does not seem to ultimately benefit the brain, in part because cART does not uniformly penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and in part because HIV-1 seems to permanently turn on the part of the immune system that causes …

Effect Of Substrates In The Resistivity And Adhesion Of Copper Nanoparticle Ink, Pritam Poddar Jan 2016

Effect Of Substrates In The Resistivity And Adhesion Of Copper Nanoparticle Ink, Pritam Poddar

Theses

Printed electronics processes have the potential to make electronics manufacturing more flexible by providing a wider choice of materials and easier processing steps. In traditional electronics manufacturing techniques, corrosive etching steps limit the choice of materials and also require advanced infrastructure for process implementation. High speed low cost printing processes (e.g. inkjet) can be used, and the printed tracks can then be cured to conductive circuits that meet the needs of electronic devices like radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, sensors, etc.

In this work, intense flashes of broad spectrum light from Xenon lamps are used to cure inkjet printed metal …

Analyses Of Amber Mutants Of Salmonella Phage Spn3us, Andrea Denisse Benítez Quintana Jan 2016

Analyses Of Amber Mutants Of Salmonella Phage Spn3us, Andrea Denisse Benítez Quintana

Theses

The giant Salmonella enterica phage SPN3US belongs to the ϕKZ-related phages which are amongst the most complex virions of prokaryotic viruses, even more complex than most eukaryotic viruses. SPN3US for example assigns 46% of its 240kbp genome to code for virion proteins. We have limited knowledge about these giant phages as they encode extremely diverged genes, from other phages and even to one another. The ϕKZ-related phages possess large genomes and correspondingly large and complex capsids, two sets of fragmented RNAP β and β’-like proteins and they also exhibit an unusual replication having a DNA polymerase split into two polypeptides. …

More Wobble: Daniel Dennett's Elbow Room Unscrambled, Patsy Cadareanu Jan 2016

More Wobble: Daniel Dennett's Elbow Room Unscrambled, Patsy Cadareanu

Theses

Through the use of the seemingly endless metaphors in his books Elbow Room (1984), Brainstorms (1978) and Freedom Evolves (2002), Daniel Dennett is able to construct a coherent stance on what it means to be morally responsible in a world that may or may not be determined. This paper explores Dennett’s notion of responsibility and its implications. Determinism is the doctrine that all events are necessitated by previous events which have caused the only possible future. In contrast, indeterminism is the idea that events do not come about through necessity. Indeterminism is often thought of as ‘freedom,’ but this is …

Ingress Well-Played: City As Mmo, Elizabeth L. Lawley Jan 2016

Ingress Well-Played: City As Mmo, Elizabeth L. Lawley

Articles

This paper describes player experience for Ingress, a geo-local, mobile augmented reality game created by Google’s Niantic Labs. Ingress incorporates aspects of both pervasive, alternate reality (ARG) and massively multiplayer online (MMO) games. However, unlike many ARGs, Ingress is not focused on a specific time-limited period, or linked to a single real-world event or location. And unlike a typical MMO, play in Ingress is geo-spatially limited; players must be physically proximate to game elements in order to interact with them. Using game mechanics similar to those of many MMOs, Ingress provides for a range of gameplay, based both on …

Developing An Algal Biofilm Filtration System For The Remediation Of Nutrient Pollution In Freshwater Ponds, Danielle Delp Dec 2015

Developing An Algal Biofilm Filtration System For The Remediation Of Nutrient Pollution In Freshwater Ponds, Danielle Delp

Theses

Anthropogenic nutrient pollution is one of the most serious threats facing aquatic systems in modern times. Pollution with compounds containing nitrogen and phosphorous encourages rapid development of autotrophic biomass, or blooms, that severely degrade the quality of an aquatic system both as a habitat for organisms and as a water resource for human use. In freshwater ponds, the widespread need for treatment of nutrient pollution and resulting blooms has resulted in the growth of a large industry dedicated to pond management and maintenance. These companies utilize a variety of chemical and non-chemical treatments to prevent the growth of blooms or …

Numerical Investigation Of Parameters Impacting The Wall Thickness Of Carbon Nanotubes Manufactured By Template-Based Chemical Vapor Deposition, Yashar Seyed Vahedein Dec 2015

Numerical Investigation Of Parameters Impacting The Wall Thickness Of Carbon Nanotubes Manufactured By Template-Based Chemical Vapor Deposition, Yashar Seyed Vahedein

Theses

Template-based chemical vapor deposition (TB-CVD) is a versatile technique for manufacturing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or CNT-based devices for various applications. In this process, carbon is deposited by thermal decomposition of a carbon-based precursor gas inside the nanoscopic cylindrical pores of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) templates to form CNTs. Experimental results show CNT formation in templates is controlled by TB-CVD process parameters, such as time, temperature and flow rate. Optimization of this process is done empirically, requiring tremendous time and effort. Moreover, there is a need for a more comprehensive and low cost way to characterize the flow in the furnace …

Measuring Physiological Arousal Towards Packaging: Tracking Electrodermal Activity Within The Consumer Shopping Environment, Rupert Andrew Hurley, Dan E. Hutcherson, Charles E. Tonkin, Shaundra B. Dailey, Julie C. Rice Dec 2015

Measuring Physiological Arousal Towards Packaging: Tracking Electrodermal Activity Within The Consumer Shopping Environment, Rupert Andrew Hurley, Dan E. Hutcherson, Charles E. Tonkin, Shaundra B. Dailey, Julie C. Rice

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Contrasted against the popular belief that consumers make purely rational decisions, purchasing decisions are rapid, subconscious, and emotional decisions. In order to understand a consumer’s purchasing decisions, we suggest finding methods beyond focus groups, which typify this type of research, to measure and interpret consumer reactions to various packaging designs. In this paper, we examine electrodermal activity, a measure of emotional arousal, and eye tracking in the context of a realistic shopping environment as possible measures to support insight into customer preference of packaging. We hypothesized that presenting consumers with an experience more closely related to actual shopping would encourage …
