A Limited Comparison Of Ultraviolet Curing And Convection Drying On Paper Permanence, Nancy Bittner May 1983

A Limited Comparison Of Ultraviolet Curing And Convection Drying On Paper Permanence, Nancy Bittner

Theses

Archivists, conservators and librarians are concerned with paper permanence. Tests have shown that paper permanence is affected by light (especially ultra violet), temperature and humidity changes, acidity, in sects and rodents, and by general use. Environmental damages are often insidious. The objective of this study is to find whether ultraviolet curing and evaporative drying as experienced in the printing industry would affect paper permanence. Glen G. Gray's procedure for finding the reaction rate (the rate at which chemical reactions are completed) of paper is followed. This method relies on the fact that a chemical reaction occurs at speeds which depend …

Effect Of Plate Surface Characteristics On Image Reproduction In Electrostatic Planographic Platemaking, Sung Jae Lee May 1983

Effect Of Plate Surface Characteristics On Image Reproduction In Electrostatic Planographic Platemaking, Sung Jae Lee

Theses

Four different types of surfaces of aluminum plates; 1) brush grained, 2) chemically grained, 3) brush grained and anodized, and 4) electrochemical ly grained and anodized substrates coated with polyvinyl oxazol, an organic photoconductor were studied. The experiments were divided into two parts. The first part concerned with the photoelectric characteristics of the various surfaces, and the second part was involved with image quality relative to photoelectric properties of different substrates. The characteristics of each of the surfaces was briefly discussed. Photoelectric properties such as 1) photosensitivity, 2) spectral response, 3) surface acceptance potential, 4) dark decay, 5) light decay, …

A Performance Evaluation Of Rounded And Backed Books Vs. Square Backed Books, David Harlan Parisi May 1983

A Performance Evaluation Of Rounded And Backed Books Vs. Square Backed Books, David Harlan Parisi

Theses

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the performance of rounded and backed books against books left square backed. The variables which are introduced into the study will enable the results to provide needed information on the performance of the many different binding constructions librarians and library binders are confronted with. Rounding and backing is an optional operation when binding a book, an operation which is sometimes by-passed on smaller books. A book that is not rounded and backed is square backed. It is suspected that rounding and backing a book will indeed enhance its performance and durability, therefore …

Dream Images, John Nasif Samaha May 1983

Dream Images, John Nasif Samaha

Theses

Please seek out the real purpose of this report in the photographs. It is with these images that I have tried to communicate what I have thought, felt, and dreamt. My work is experimental in technique. The images are created as fantasies juxtaposed with the tradition of design, figure, line, planes of dimension, and overall composition. By using color materials in a non-conventional way, I am exploring the range of photographic possibilities with color, form, drama, emotion, mystery, and life. Photography functions beautifully for these narrative elements because of its ability to transform a real event into something mysterious, removed …

An Application Of Multi-Dimensional Scaling To The Re-Examination Of Preferred Tone Reproduction, David J. Porter May 1983

An Application Of Multi-Dimensional Scaling To The Re-Examination Of Preferred Tone Reproduction, David J. Porter

Theses

Black and white prints were produced of several scenes that varied in both negative contrast and negative exposure. Subjects rated the various prints by categories based on their own personal understanding of what an excellent print was. The boundaries of the categories were found and used to determine the preferred tone reproduction characteristics. Individual differences were also scaled with the use of a proximity measure determined from the categorical data. The preferred contrast (1.46 +0.24) was significantly higher than the contrast that has been found to be preferred in earlier studies. The application of this study to more general situations …

Brushwork On Bowls, Elizabeth Gordon May 1983

Brushwork On Bowls, Elizabeth Gordon

Theses

I intend to develop a series of pieces involving brushwork. My primary investigation will be figure -ground, color, and abstraction from nature. Brushwork will be chosen as the technique of mark making, because of its physical properties, i.e. stroke depth, energy, shape creating ability, and line quality. It is also chosen for its potential to evoke a sense of lyricism.

Natural Shelters, Habitable Landscapes, Joseph Vitone May 1983

Natural Shelters, Habitable Landscapes, Joseph Vitone

Theses

The purpose of this thesis will be to try to share with you an energy and character that I find in trees, in the earth, in the qualities of light, in the intimacy of houses and yards. There is a simple yet deep-running link between our created spaces (our homes) and the spirit and body of the woods. I feel a strong kinship between myself and the land that produced me- -a super-blood tie, a joining from long ago--that transcends anthropocentric thought and concern. I want to know that link, to be at ease with the earth and to extend …

Synthesis Of 1-Aryl-3-Pyrazolidinones Through 3-(2'-Arylaminoethyl)-1,4,2-Dioxide-5-One Intermediates, David G. Lincoln May 1983

Synthesis Of 1-Aryl-3-Pyrazolidinones Through 3-(2'-Arylaminoethyl)-1,4,2-Dioxide-5-One Intermediates, David G. Lincoln

Theses

A new preparation of 1-arylpyrazolidinones, not involving the prior preparation of arylhydrazines , is reported. The reaction of 3-arylaminopropiono hydroxamic acids with chloroformates gives the title compounds. This transformation is discussed in terms of the intermediacy of the corresponding l,4,2-dioxazol-5-one ring system. These intermediates undergo mild nitrogen-atom induced decomposition with simultaneous N-N bond formation. The effects of chloroformates and aryl substitution is discussed.

Intimations, Scot Bennett May 1983

Intimations, Scot Bennett

Theses

The concentration in this thesis will not necessarily focus on the print as an isolated wholistic art-form, but rather present the print as an intrinsic part of some other whole . Practically the purpose will be to manually and visually transport the viewer from a present environment to another; one in which he may hopefully identify. The works will be multi-media ones inclusive of and related to the techniques of printmaking (intaglio and lithography) .

Micro-Circuit Reticle Fabrication: An Investigation Of A Silver Halide Emulsion As A Portable Conformable Mask, Patrick St. Cin Apr 1983

Micro-Circuit Reticle Fabrication: An Investigation Of A Silver Halide Emulsion As A Portable Conformable Mask, Patrick St. Cin

Theses

An investigation of the possibility of spin-coating a silver halide emusion similar to that used on Kodak HRP plates onto a positive resist coating reticle blank was made. By changing the cating weight and temperature of the emulsion it was found that the emulsion could be coated onto the reticle without harm to the positive resist material. A five micron width line was imaged successfully and measured in the final chrome sub-layer of the reticle.

Form, Donna Colebeck Apr 1983

Form, Donna Colebeck

Theses

The body of work in this thesis embodies an exploration on form. My interpretation has primarily dealt with form as it relates to hollowware, both functional and non-functional in nature. The hollowware pieces maintain relatively simple shapes with smooth contours, linear dimensions and movement. The linear elements have opened different interpretations so that the work may extend and expand the forms beyond the geometric shapes to allow new contours and directions . Various transitory lines, subtle curves and gradual taperings all work to enhance gentle flow, movement and elegance within each piece.

The Effects Of Agitation In Positive Photoresist Image Quality When Using A Bubble Development System, Keith D. Mogerley Apr 1983

The Effects Of Agitation In Positive Photoresist Image Quality When Using A Bubble Development System, Keith D. Mogerley

Theses

An important goal of the microelectronics industry is to make new technological advances while keeping the cost of the fabrication process down. To achieve this goal, the microelectronics industry are presently placing more active devices on each chip, while at the same time trying to increase the number of successful chips per wafer. In order for the industry to successfully do this, they must reduce all of the dimensions in the circuit while trying to maintain its physical, chemical, and functional properties. These demands have made all steps of the fabrication process more critical. The scope of this project will …

A Decision Theory Approach To Tone Reproduction, Kevin E. Spaulding Apr 1983

A Decision Theory Approach To Tone Reproduction, Kevin E. Spaulding

Theses

The concepts of statistical decision theory were applied to the photographic tone reproduction system to develop an objective measurement of tone reproduction accuracy called the "expected loss" of the system. Reproductions were made of four scenes using systems with a wide range of tone reproduction characteristics. The expected loss for each system/scene combination was calculated, and the perceived tone reproduction accuracy was determined using the psychophysical scaling method of magnitude estimation. A statistically significant correlation was found between the subjectively determined accuracy, and system expected loss, but the degree of correlation was not high enough for the merit function to …

Derivation Of The Transformation Relationship Of Pseudo-Invariant Features Of Two Landsat Images, Jeffrey R. Sefl Apr 1983

Derivation Of The Transformation Relationship Of Pseudo-Invariant Features Of Two Landsat Images, Jeffrey R. Sefl

Theses

The purpose of this effort was to determine the relationships of the spectral radiance distributions of pseudo-invariant features for a selected pair of Landsat images. The relationships for the four bands (band 4 through band 7) were determined to be linearly related. The transformation equations will map one images brightness values on to a second images brightness values.

Perception Of Graininess In Complex Photographic Images Through Objective And Subjective Comparison, Glenn E. Mcneill Apr 1983

Perception Of Graininess In Complex Photographic Images Through Objective And Subjective Comparison, Glenn E. Mcneill

Theses

A model previously used for the perception of graininess in uniform-density images that exist in electrophotography, has been verified for use in silver-halide photography. In addition, a model has been developed which estimates the sensation of graininess in photographic images of non -uniform density. Given the relationship between graininess and density in uniform-density images, the graininess in a complex image is weighted by the frequency of occurrence of each measured density in the image. Such an analysis is compared to subjective evaluations. It is shown that the graininess model is useful in predicting the sensation of graininess in photographs.

Variations In Image Magnification Due To Mask Repositioning In A 1:1 Projection Printer, Sarah M. Dolan Apr 1983

Variations In Image Magnification Due To Mask Repositioning In A 1:1 Projection Printer, Sarah M. Dolan

Theses

A Perkin-Elmer Micralign 230 Exposure Tool was used in an analysis of magnification variation. In the analvsis, all elements were kept constant except for the repositioning of the mask between sets of wafers that were exposed. Repositioning was initiated by removal and replacement of the mask from the exposure tool and the mask holder. Overlay measurements were then taken from the exposed wafers. These measurements were used to calculate the amount of magnification error of the images found on the wafers. These magnification values verified the hypothesis that repositioning of the mask has a significant effect on magnification values.
