The Effects Of Shadow Visibility On Image Interpretability, Lawrence A. Maver
The Effects Of Shadow Visibility On Image Interpretability, Lawrence A. Maver
Theses
An empirical approach to measuring and predicting the effects of target scene shadows on image interpretability is described. A simulated aerial imagery data base is utilized to quantify image interpretability and computed graphics form the basis of the predictor algorithms. A technique to quantify the relative visibilities of individual line segment images is developed. Three categories of predictors are proposed and utilize line segment visibility to predict image interpretability. The success of the algorithms are tested using regression analysis procedures.

The Pot As Nurturer: An Approach To Functional Pottery, Marian L. Baker
The Pot As Nurturer: An Approach To Functional Pottery, Marian L. Baker
Theses
What is meant by life in pots? Animals drawn on the sides? Arms and legs sprouting out from the clay walls? a big face on the side like those horrible mugs you see in tacky gift shops? Is it a quality in the throwing? A tiny piece of clay frozen out of place on the wall? A fat round shape that may speak of pregnancy or over-eating? Gooey slip dripping off the sides? A distorted portion: lip, foot, wall? A disoriented pot, leaning on its left foot? A drunk pot, ready to fall over? It it none of these, but …

Second Order Coherent Power Spectra, Brian A. Gorin
Second Order Coherent Power Spectra, Brian A. Gorin
Theses
The relationship between second order stochastic processes and coherent power spectra are explored for developed grain size frequency distributions of silver halide emulsion/developer combinations. Although Wiener spectra represent incoherent power spectra, the coherent case has been unresolved due to the difficulty of filtering the optical system effect. The emulsion plates were exposed with a uniform irradiance distribution from an incoherent tungsten source to create a series of uniform density samples. Conventional processing chemistry is utilized with substitution of different developer types, from predominantly physical development to direct chemical development. The exposed and processed density samples were liquid gated with refractive …
Geometric Abstract Design, Sanghye Han
Geometric Abstract Design, Sanghye Han
Theses
This thesis is a presentation of four grid designs. They are woven on a multi-harness loom and utilize a strip-weaving technique. The designs are based on a series of colors, and consist of three grid elements; the line, the square and the rectangle. Through the variation of colors and the repeated arrangement of patterns consisting of the aforementioned grid elements, my intention is to have a form of geometric abstraction result from my designs.
A Constant Force Bicycle Transmission, Thomas Chase
A Constant Force Bicycle Transmission, Thomas Chase
Theses
A prototype design for a human powered automatic transmission intended for use on an ordinary touring bicycle is presented. The transmission is intended to automatically adjust the gearing of the bicycle to maintain an optimum pedal force, regardless of the current riding conditions. Therefore, the transmission eliminates the need for the cyclist to manually adjust the bicycle gearing. The entire transmission is a self-contained unit designed to bolt onto the rear wheel of an otherwise unmodified 27-inch bicycle. The transmission combines a unique adaptation of a commercially popular continuously variable traction drive with a totally mechanical integral feedback controller. The …

A Software Prototype For The Ibm Series/1 Remote Intelligent Printers, Thomas Weber
A Software Prototype For The Ibm Series/1 Remote Intelligent Printers, Thomas Weber
Theses
Over the period of December 1982 to May 1983, a software prototype to support the IBM 4975 model 01 A printer was developed. The host computer was the IBM Series/1 minicomputer. The printer controller used was the Feature Programmable Multi-Line Adapter. Both the controller and printer contain one or more microprocessors that do some processing for the Series/1. With the RS232C electrical interface, the printer has remote capabilities. The electrical interface performs data transmission that is serial, asynchronous, and full duplex. This thesis serves as an application showing how intelligent printers and controllers can be utilized effectively on the Series/1.

Explicit Pl Self-Knottings And The Structure Of Pl Homotopy Complex Projective Spaces, Douglas Meadows
Explicit Pl Self-Knottings And The Structure Of Pl Homotopy Complex Projective Spaces, Douglas Meadows
Articles
We show that certain piecewise-linear homotopy complex projective spaces may be described as a union of smooth manifolds glued along their common boundaries. These boundaries are sphere bundles and the glueing homeomorphisms are piecewise-linear self-knottings on these bundles. Furthermore, we describe these self-knottings very explicitly and obtain information on the groups of concordance classes of such maps.

Technology In The Late Twentieth Century: Humanism Versus Technocracy, A Philosophical Inquiry, Peter Moss Handler
Technology In The Late Twentieth Century: Humanism Versus Technocracy, A Philosophical Inquiry, Peter Moss Handler
Theses
As an artist in metal living and working in the last part of the twentieth century, I feel it to be important that my work relate to this specific period of time. That is, to look where we are going becomes more important than where we have been. The most powerful single influence on where we are going, in my judgment, is technology. The images of technology, not the things of it, become my starting place. My intent, however, is not merely to celebrate technology. That is an uncritical attitude.
Synthesis Of Mono- And Dialkyl Catechol Ethers, Sujitra Dhumrongvaraporn
Synthesis Of Mono- And Dialkyl Catechol Ethers, Sujitra Dhumrongvaraporn
Theses
Estabrook and coworkers have developed an enzymatic analysis for the oxidation of catechol depicted in Figure 1b. The rate of this oxidation (k2) is so high that the
[Figure 1.]
rate of the O-dealkylation reactions of monocatechol ethers (k1) may perhaps be conveniently followed by monitoring catechol concentrations as it is produced. That is with k2 >> k1, a combined dealkylation and oxidation enzymatic system might be developed to provide kinetic data on step 1, ie. on k1 values.
With this in mind, a series of appropriate substrates ie. O-monoalkyl catechol ethers needed …

A Model To Predict The Reflectance From A Concrete Surface As A Function Of The Sun-Object-Image Angular Relationship, George C. Grogan
A Model To Predict The Reflectance From A Concrete Surface As A Function Of The Sun-Object-Image Angular Relationship, George C. Grogan
Theses
A study was made of the variation in the reflectance of a concrete sample as the sun-object-image angular relationship was varied. The research work was performed in the controlled conditions of a laboratory so that atmospheric effects could be neglected. Reflectance measurements were taken from a. concrete sample whose surface roughness had been measured. Both specular and diffuse illumination in the red (630 - 680nm) wavelength region of the visible spectrum were measured. A model which can be used to predict the reflectance value for a given sun-object-image angular relationship was developed. Actual reflectance measurements taken outdoors agreed to within …

The Right Mood, Mary Pat O'Brien
Theses
Through this supportive documentation of my thesis work, I hope to verbally clarify the intentions mentioned in my proposal. Due to the subjective nature of abstract paintings, it is nearly impossible to conclusively prove a point. By referring to observations made by and about other artists and their work, I have been able to substantiate and complement my own ideas. I found evidence of what I interpreted to be the underlying attitude that is developed individually but shared collectively by artists. It seems this "shared attitude" has no geographic or time boundaries. It is remarkable to note parallels between the …

In preparation for this project I have read material on Andean culture and assembled myths and legends indigenous to the region. This collection, along with research I will undertake in Quito, will eventually aid me in the presentations of my thesis. Pending financial considerations I plan to leave for Ecuador in the beginning of June and establish contacts in Quito with Ministerio de Asuntos Indigenas, sociologists, and photographers who advocate in interest in Indian culture, and Peace Corps volunteers working in the highland area. During my stay I intend to be frank and open about my objectives, offering to share …
Emotion As Visual Image, Beth Buvarsky
Emotion As Visual Image, Beth Buvarsky
Theses
I intend to explore the importance of object and image as symbols that visually express emotion. I am interested in the human condition and the influences and impressions that cause us to see things the way we do. Through the transformation of feelings and forms, I hope to relate emotional responses to situations we find ourselves in. I plan to use holloware techniques within a sculptural format, possibly combined with clay and other materials to achieve these images.

Fabric Constructions, Joanna Dunkin
Fabric Constructions, Joanna Dunkin
Theses
The artist is not simply a passive reflector of his or her world, but a dynamic creator of it. I have tried to expand and enrich my experience rather than merely duplicate it. The world I create is of planes, volumes, spatial sequences, and some familiar architectural elements such as stairs and boxes. By using the above mentioned elements, a number of interlocking and highly ordered spatial relation ships have resulted. An interlocking spatial relationship consists of two spaces whose fields overlap to form a zone of shared space. When two spaces interlock their volumes in this manner, each retains …
