Ordered Polyesters And Polyester-Sulfones: Aromatic Nucleophilic Substitution Reactions Involving Diaryl Ethers, Linda Hobart Jun 1985

Ordered Polyesters And Polyester-Sulfones: Aromatic Nucleophilic Substitution Reactions Involving Diaryl Ethers, Linda Hobart

Theses

Synthesis of methyl substituted phenols (via various diazonium salts), to be used as a monomer in the synthesis of ordered polyesters and to study the liquid crystal continuum from monomer-to-oligomer-to-polymer, was attempted. Deblocking of di(methoxyphenyl) terephthalates with sodium ethanethiolate in dimethylformamide resulted in the preferential cleavage of the ester linkage over the alkyl -aromatic ether linkage. A number of cleavage products resulted, depending upon the reaction conditions. 4,4'[sulfonyl bis(ρ-phenylene ether)] dianisole was prepared as a model compound to be used in the ordered poly(ester-sulfone) study. Deblocking with hydrobromic and hydrobromic acid-acetic acid cosolvents was successful. However, deblocking wtih sodium ethanethiolate …

Dot Structure Analysis Of Film And Developer Combinations To Optimize Lof For The Dc-300b/L Scanner, Randy Demuth May 1985

Dot Structure Analysis Of Film And Developer Combinations To Optimize Lof For The Dc-300b/L Scanner, Randy Demuth

Theses

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the two current systems which are presently industry standards for judging test exposures which are used to determine an optimum exposure value for the Hell DC 300B/L electronic dot generating scanner: 1. The Hell System 2. The Kodak System The Hell System uses aim density measurements of specific percent dot area's or integral dot densities to obtain an optimum exposure value. The Kodak System compares the dot shape and size of complementary 95 percent and 5 percent dots to obtain an optimum exposure value. The Hell computer program test tape number 149 …

The Effects On Hue Resulting From Black Overprinting In Halftone Reproductions, Brian Philippsen May 1985

The Effects On Hue Resulting From Black Overprinting In Halftone Reproductions, Brian Philippsen

Theses

A type of black printer that only existed in theory is now being applied in the printing industry. The process which makes use of this black printer is known as gray-component replacement. Developed from the extension of the undercolor removal process, the use of gray-component replacement in printing halftone reproductions is said to result in numerous technical and cost benefits. When used to the maximum, the process eliminates one of the three process color inks in a given unit area and prints black ink from highlight to shadow. A problem can result from the use of this process as it …

A Study Of The Effect Of Ink Viscosity On Dot Gain In Offset Lithography, David Dailey May 1985

A Study Of The Effect Of Ink Viscosity On Dot Gain In Offset Lithography, David Dailey

Theses

Dot gain is the enlargement which takes place in a dot from the time the dot is captured or generated on the film until it is printed. Dot gain can cause many problems, including color variation and loss of contrast, and if uncontrolled is one of the main contributors to waste in offset lithography. Of the many factors influencing dot gain, inks have been found to be a major contributor. One property recommended for further investigation is ink viscosity, which is the resistance to flow of an ink. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ink …

The Effects Of Common Solvents On Different Types Of Flexographic Printing Plates, Jack Jenkins May 1985

The Effects Of Common Solvents On Different Types Of Flexographic Printing Plates, Jack Jenkins

Theses

A dynamic development which has sparked flexography is the introduction and use of photopolymer plates. These plates have simplified flexographic printing by reducing the amount of time and effort needed to prepare plates for press and makeready. An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of commonly used solvent mixtures on flexographic plates. The plates tested include those using natural rubber, Buna N, and various photopolymers. The experiment specifically studied change in hardness of these plate materials due to immersion in different solvent mixtures over time. Noticeable differances in the degree of softening of plates was observed after 24 hours …

A Performance Comparison Of Oversewn, Pva Double Fanned, And Cleat-Laced Bindings, Caroline Frazer Watson May 1985

A Performance Comparison Of Oversewn, Pva Double Fanned, And Cleat-Laced Bindings, Caroline Frazer Watson

Theses

Librarians and library binders are no longer always able to specify the traditional, superior oversewing method for binding library books. This problem emerged due to economic pressures within several related industries resulting in a proliferation of economic, but often inferior, binding technologies. As libraries are only approximately ten to fifteen percent of total publishers' sales, books cannot specifically be made for the library market. In addition, many of the new binding technologies yield books with insufficient inner margin space to prebind or rebind books utilizing the oversewing binding method. And finally, librarians, also faced with tight budgets, must find economic …

An Analysis Of Stroke Fluid Flow In A Converging Channel Using A Penalty Function Finite Element Formulation, Keith A. Honkala May 1985

An Analysis Of Stroke Fluid Flow In A Converging Channel Using A Penalty Function Finite Element Formulation, Keith A. Honkala

Theses

A penalty function finite element program is developed to study two dimensional creeping flow in a converging channel. The finite element solution is compared to the analytical solution of purely radial flow. The analysis reveals that the assumption of purely radial flow is valid for small apex angles, but is inappropriate for larger angles .

Simulation Of An Open-Loop Stepping Motor System, Gregory Bell May 1985

Simulation Of An Open-Loop Stepping Motor System, Gregory Bell

Theses

This report presents a description and functional model of a hybrid stepping motor drive system. The motor drive methods of fullstepping and backstepping are presented as examples. Test methods for system characterization are described, and response characteristics for the simulated and experimental results are compared to verify the model. This paper shows that an open-loop stepping motor drive system can be accurately simulated to predict real hardware performance.
