To Know A Bāthā: Family Language Socialization Among Buddhist Immigrants From Myanmar In New York City, Chu M. Paing
To Know A Bāthā: Family Language Socialization Among Buddhist Immigrants From Myanmar In New York City, Chu M. Paing
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
While there is a rising number of research on Heritage Language Maintenance among East Asian immigrants, there have been very few research done on Southeast Asian minority heritage language maintenance. The purpose of this paper is to shed the light on the practices and ideologies towards heritage language maintenance in two Buddhist immigrant families from Myanmar residing in New York City. This paper approaches the topic of heritage language maintenance by employing Elinor Ochs and Bambi Schieffelin’s (1984) theoretical framework on language socialization, i.e., socializing U.S. born Burmese children to become competent members of both their heritage and American societies. …

Doing Business In America: A Jewish History, Hasia Diner
Doing Business In America: A Jewish History, Hasia Diner
Purdue University Press Book Previews
American and Jewish historians have long shied away from the topic of Jews and business. Avoidance patterns grew in part from old, often negative stereotypes that linked Jews with money, and the perceived ease and regularity with which they found success with money, condemning Jews for their desires for wealth and their proclivities for turning a profit. A new, dauntless generation of historians, however, realizes that Jewish business has had and continues to have a profound impact on American culture and development, and patterns of immigrant Jewish exploration of business opportunities reflect internal, communal, Jewish-cultural structures and their relationship to …

Universities In Imperial Austria 1848–1918: A Social History Of A Multilingual Space, Jan Surman
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Combining history of science and a history of universities with the new imperial history, Universities in Imperial Austria 1848–1918: A Social History of a Multilingual Space by Jan Surman analyzes the practice of scholarly migration and its lasting influence on the intellectual output in the Austrian part of the Habsburg Empire.
The Habsburg Empire and its successor states were home to developments that shaped Central Europe's scholarship well into the twentieth century. Universities became centers of both state- and nation-building, as well as of confessional resistance, placing scholars if not in conflict, then certainly at odds with the neutral international …
Impacts Of Urbanization On Costs Of Production And Land Use In The Central Southern Seaboard: A Farm-Level Analysis, Richard F. Nehring, Kenneth Erickson, James M. Harris, Charlie Hallahan, Ani Katchova, Flavius Badau
Impacts Of Urbanization On Costs Of Production And Land Use In The Central Southern Seaboard: A Farm-Level Analysis, Richard F. Nehring, Kenneth Erickson, James M. Harris, Charlie Hallahan, Ani Katchova, Flavius Badau
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
This study uses stochastic production frontier (SPF) and DEA frontier methods to estimate the impact of urban influence on the cost of production for traditional corn/soybeans farms in the Southern Seaboard (excepting Virginia and Alabama). We hypothesize that urban influence decreases the technical efficiency of these farms. Although states in this region are not entirely subject to urban influence, some parts of states in this region are highly urbanized. We find that farmers in urban-influenced locations are less technically efficient than farmers in rural locations in the region examined. During 2002-2014, stochastic production frontier and DEA frontier procedures indicate that …

Annual Net Returns To Cover Crops In Iowa, Alejandro Plastina, Fangge Liu, Wendiam Sawadgo, Fernando E. Miguez, Sarah Carlson, Guillermo Marcillo
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
Despite the active promotion of cover crops as a key conservation practice, their adoption is very limited. We developed a series of partial budgets based on a statewide survey of Iowa farmers to evaluate the changes in net returns resulting from the incorporation of cover crops into a corn or soybean production system. The average net returns to cover crop use for farmers who did not use cover crops for grazing livestock or forage were consistently negative across different planting and termination methods, tillage practices, and experience levels. Only farmers who used cover crops for grazing livestock or forage and …
Profitability Of Developing Beef Heifers On Stockpiled Winter Forages, Zachary David Mcfarlane, Chris Boyer, J. Travis Mulliniks
Profitability Of Developing Beef Heifers On Stockpiled Winter Forages, Zachary David Mcfarlane, Chris Boyer, J. Travis Mulliniks
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
We estimate the profitability of developing heifers on one stockpiled cool-season grass and two stockpiled warm-season grasses during the winter months by comparing distributions of net present value (NPV) over an 11-year useful life. Furthermore, distributions of payback period and the break-even price for each calf over the heifer’s production life were generated for each forage species. These results are compared across forages as well as to a simulated drylot system for heifer development. Data comes from a grazing experiment in Tennessee, where heifers grazed big bluestem and Indian grass combination (BBIG), switchgrass (SW), or endophyte-infected tall fescue (TF) pastures. …

Ladder Networks For Semi-Supervised Hyperspectral Image Classification, Okan Ersoy, Julian Buchel
Ladder Networks For Semi-Supervised Hyperspectral Image Classification, Okan Ersoy, Julian Buchel
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
We discuss the ladder network to perform hyperspectral image classification in a semi-supervised setting. The ladder network distinguishes itself from other semi-supervised methods by jointly optimizing a supervised and unsupervised cost. In many settings this has proven to be more successful than other semi-supervised techniques, such as pretraining using unlabeled data. We furthermore show that the convolutional ladder network outperforms most of the current techniques used in hyperspectral image classification and achieves new state-of-the-art performance on the Pavia University dataset given only 5 labeled data points per class.

Problem-Based Learning In Professional Studies From The Physiotherapy Students’ Perspective, Hilkka Korpi, Liisa Peltokallio, Arja Piirainen
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
The aim of the study was to investigate how physiotherapy students using a problem-based learning approach develop into experts during higher education, and answers the question: How do physiotherapy students at bachelor’s level understand the problem-based learning approach while learning to become professionals? PBL is examined using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) of longitudinal data written by 15 voluntary students from two different higher education institutions and collected during 3.5 years. The main results on the new way of learning strengthen earlier conceptions of the importance of reflection in the learning process. The PBL method activates a reflection process by allowing …
Wide And Deep Neural Networks In Remote Sensing: A Review, Okan Ersoy
Wide And Deep Neural Networks In Remote Sensing: A Review, Okan Ersoy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Wide and deep neural networks in multispectral and hyperspectral image classification are discussed. Wide versus deep networks have always been a topic of intense interest. Deep networks mean large number of layers in the depth direction. Wide networks can be defined as networks growing in the vertical direction. Then, wide and deep networks are networks which have growth in both vertical and horizontal directions. In this report, several directions in order to achieve such networks are described. We first review a methodology called Parallel, Self-Organizing, Hierarchical Neural Networks (PSHNN’s) which have stages growing in the vertical direction, and each stage …

Explaining Cross-Language Asymmetries In Prosodic Processing: The Cue-Driven Window Length Hypothesis, Marta Ortega-Llebaria, Daniel J. Olson, Alba Tuninetti
Explaining Cross-Language Asymmetries In Prosodic Processing: The Cue-Driven Window Length Hypothesis, Marta Ortega-Llebaria, Daniel J. Olson, Alba Tuninetti
School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications
Cross-language studies have shown that English speakers use suprasegmental cues to lexical stress less consistently than speakers of Spanish and other Germanic languages ; accordingly, these studies have attributed this asymmetry to a possible trade-off between the use of vowel reduction and suprasegmental cues in lexical access. We put forward the hypothesis that this “cue trade-off” modulates intonation processing as well, so that English speakers make less use of suprasegmental cues in comparison to Spanish speakers when processing intonation in utterances causing processing asymmetries between these two languages. In three cross-language experiments comparing English and Spanish speakers’ prediction of hypo-articulated …
