Missouri Novelty Melon Trial Results, James Quinn, Ramón Arancibia, David Trinklein

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

Novelty, specialty or personalized melons are generally smaller and different from traditional Midwest watermelons, cantaloupes or muskmelons. Sugar Cube is a successful example. This project by MU Extension was to evaluate four novelty melons on yield, quality and storage, with Sugar Cube as the control. Included in the evaluation were Brilliant (Canary), Honey Orange (crispy flesh Honeydew), Lambkin (Piel De Sapo), and Lilly (small & early Crenshaw). Each has an appearance and taste profile distinctly different from cantaloupe. The results of this project should give confidence to growers interested in novelty melons, especially for Brilliant (Canary type) and Lambkin (Piel …

Cripping Modernism: An Introduction, Maren Linett Jan 2019

Cripping Modernism: An Introduction, Maren Linett

Department of English Faculty Publications

This introduction briefly introduces literary disability studies and crip methodology. After informing readers about a few key concepts of disability studies and giving some examples of modernist writers’ use of disability metaphors, it raises questions about how disability inflects modernist themes and modernist form. It then offers synopses of the nine articles in the special issue, articles that treat a range of authors from the early to mid-twentieth century. The essays engage with literary theory, various early twentieth-century historical contexts, and issues of race, imperialism, gender, sexuality, and class.

Personality Disorder Traits: Testing Insight Regarding Presence Of Traits, Impairment, And Desire For Change, Chelsea E. Sleep, Joanna Lamkin, Donald R. Lynam, W. Keith Campbell, Joshua D. Miller Jan 2019

Personality Disorder Traits: Testing Insight Regarding Presence Of Traits, Impairment, And Desire For Change, Chelsea E. Sleep, Joanna Lamkin, Donald R. Lynam, W. Keith Campbell, Joshua D. Miller

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Mixed findings exist as to whether personality pathology involves a critical lack of awareness and insight. Research questions about insight and awareness in personality pathology are typically assessed via comparing self- and informant reports of traits. However, recent studies have measured insight by asking individuals to evaluate additional questions about impairment and desire to change. The present study uses a variety of approaches to examine these issues, including investigations of convergence between self- and informant reports (N = 197 dyads; correlations and comparisons of means) of personality psychopathology, desired trait levels, and perceptions of impairment. Convergence was observed between levels …

Inertial Impedance Of Coalescence During Collision Of Liquid Drops, Krishnaraj Sambath, Vishrut Garg, Sumeet S. Thete, Hariprasad J. Subramani, Osman A. Basaran Jan 2019

Inertial Impedance Of Coalescence During Collision Of Liquid Drops, Krishnaraj Sambath, Vishrut Garg, Sumeet S. Thete, Hariprasad J. Subramani, Osman A. Basaran

School of Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

The fluid dynamics of the collision and coalescence of liquid drops has intrigued scientists and engineers for more than a century owing to its ubiquitousness in nature, e.g. raindrop coalescence, and industrial applications, e.g. breaking of emulsions in the oil and gas industry. The complexity of the underlying dynamics, which includes occurrence of hydrodynamic singularities, has required study of the problem at different scales – macroscopic, mesoscopic and molecular – using stochastic and deterministic methods. In this work, a multi-scale, deterministic method is adopted to simulate the approach, collision, and eventual coalescence of two drops where the drops as well …

CTRC Research Publications

High-heat-flux removal is critical for the nextgeneration electronic devices to reliably operate within their temperature limits. A large portion of the thermal resistance in a traditional chip package is caused by thermal resistances at interfaces between the device, heat spreaders, and the heat sink; embedding the heat sink directly into the heat-generating device can eliminate these interface resistances and drastically reduce the overall thermal resistance. Microfluidic cooling within the embedded heat sink improves the heat dissipation, with two-phase operation offering the potential for dissipation of very high heat fluxes while maintaining moderate chip temperatures. To enable multichip stacking and other …

Visualizing Near-Wall Two-Phase Flow Morphology During Confined And Submerged Jet Impingement Boiling To The Point Of Critical Heat Flux, C. Mira Hernandez, J. A. Weibel, S. V. Garimella Jan 2019

Visualizing Near-Wall Two-Phase Flow Morphology During Confined And Submerged Jet Impingement Boiling To The Point Of Critical Heat Flux, C. Mira Hernandez, J. A. Weibel, S. V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Confined and submerged two-phase jet impingement is a compact, low-pressure-drop solution for high heat flux dissipation from electronic components. Nucleate boiling can be sustained up to significantly higher heat fluxes during two-phase jet impingement as compared to pool boiling. The increases in critical heat flux are explained via hydrodynamic mechanisms that have been debated in the literature. In this study, the two-phase flow morphology of a single subcooled jet of water that impinges on a circular heat source is visualized at high speed with synchronized top and side views of the confinement gap. The impinging jet issues from a 3.75-mm-diameter …

Three-Dimensional Liquid-Vapor Interface Reconstruction From High-Speed Stereo Images During Pool Boiling, C. Mira-Hernandez, J. A. Weibel, P. P. Vlachos, S V. Garimella Jan 2019

Three-Dimensional Liquid-Vapor Interface Reconstruction From High-Speed Stereo Images During Pool Boiling, C. Mira-Hernandez, J. A. Weibel, P. P. Vlachos, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

A technique for reconstruction of liquid-gas interfaces based on high-speed stereo-imaging is applied to the liquid-vapor interfaces formed above a heated surface during pool boiling. Template matching is used for determining the correspondence of local features of the liquid-vapor interfaces between the two camera views. A sampling grid is overlaid on the reference image, and windows centered at each sampled pixel are compared with windows centered along the epipolar line in the target image to obtain a correlation signal. The three-dimensional coordinates of each matched pixel are determined via triangulation, which yields the physical world representation of the liquid-vapor interface. …

Evaporation-Driven Micromixing In Sessile Droplets For Miniaturized Absorbance-Based Colorimetry, A. Chandramohan, M. Chakraborty, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella Jan 2019

Evaporation-Driven Micromixing In Sessile Droplets For Miniaturized Absorbance-Based Colorimetry, A. Chandramohan, M. Chakraborty, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

We demonstrate the use of an evaporating, sessile droplet on a nonwetting substrate as a miniature micromixing device to conduct sample−dye reactions for absorbance-based colorimetry. The nonwetting substrate supports buoyancy-induced mixing inside the droplet for rapid completion of the measurement. The Bradford assay is used as a proof of concept, where a protein-containing sample is reacted with a reagent dye to measure the protein concentration. Viability of absorbance measurement through the droplet is first established using droplets in which the reactants are mixed prior to their deposition onto the substrate. In a second set of experiments involving in situ mixing, …

Experimental Investigation Of Boiling Regimes In A Capillary-Fed Two-Layer Evaporator Wick, S. Sudhakar, J A. Weibel, S V. Garimella Jan 2019

Experimental Investigation Of Boiling Regimes In A Capillary-Fed Two-Layer Evaporator Wick, S. Sudhakar, J A. Weibel, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Vapor chambers with transformative evaporator wick designs capable of passively dissipating high heat fluxes over large areas, while maintaining low thermal resistances, can meet the thermal management needs of next-generation power semiconductor devices. Our prior work proposed a two-layer evaporator wick structure to enhance the performance of vapor chambers operating at high heat fluxes. The current study experimentally characterizes the capillary-fed boiling heat transfer behavior in such a two-layer evaporator wick, compared to a homogeneous (single-layer) wick, over a 1 cm2 evaporator area. The two-layer design comprises a thin base wick layer that is fed with liquid from a thick …

Simultaneous Wick And Fluid Selection For The Design Of Minimized-Thermal-Resistance Vapor Chambers Under Different Operating Conditions, K. Baraya, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella Jan 2019

Simultaneous Wick And Fluid Selection For The Design Of Minimized-Thermal-Resistance Vapor Chambers Under Different Operating Conditions, K. Baraya, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

The thermal resistance of a vapor chamber is primarily governed by conduction across the evaporator wick and the saturation temperature gradient in the vapor core. The relative contributions of these two predominant resistances can vary dramatically with vapor chamber operating conditions and geometry. In the limit of very thin form factors, the contribution from the vapor core thermal resistance dominates the overall thermal resistance of the vapor chamber; recent work has focused on working fluid selection to minimize overall thermal resistance in this limit. However, the wick thermal resistance becomes increasingly significant as its thickness increases to support higher heat …

On The Transient Thermal Response Of Thin Vapor Chamber Heat Spreaders: Governing Mechanisms And Performance Relative To Metal Spreaders, G. Patankar, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella Jan 2019

On The Transient Thermal Response Of Thin Vapor Chamber Heat Spreaders: Governing Mechanisms And Performance Relative To Metal Spreaders, G. Patankar, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Vapor chambers can offer a passive heat spreading solution for thermal management in electronics applications ranging from mobile devices to high-power servers. The steady-state operation and performance of vapor chambers has been extensively explored. However, most electronic devices have inherently transient operational modes. For such applications, it is critical to understand the transient thermal response of vapor chamber heat spreaders and to benchmark their transient performance relative to the known behavior of metal heat spreaders. This study uses a low-cost, 3D, transient semi-analytical transport model to explore the transient thermal behavior of thin vapor chambers. We identify the three key …

A Compliant Microstructured Thermal Interface Material For Dry And Pluggable Interfaces, J. Cui, J. Wang, J. A. Weibel, L. Pan Jan 2019

A Compliant Microstructured Thermal Interface Material For Dry And Pluggable Interfaces, J. Cui, J. Wang, J. A. Weibel, L. Pan

CTRC Research Publications

Thermal interface materials (TIMs), such as thermal pastes and pads, can successfully enhance contact thermal conductance by filling the gaps caused by the surface nonflatness and roughness. However, there is still an unaddressed demand for TIMs which can be applied to pluggable or reworkable interfaces in electronic systems, such as in opto-electronic transceiver modules. Reducing the contact thermal resistances at these interfaces has become increasingly important as device power density increases. These applications require dry contact interfaces that can offer the required thermal conductance under a low pressure and endure repeated mechanical compression and shear. We present a compliant metallized …

Limitations Of Zt As A Figure Of Merit For Nanostructured Thermoelectric Materials, Xufeng Wang, Mark Lundstrom Jan 2019

Limitations Of Zt As A Figure Of Merit For Nanostructured Thermoelectric Materials, Xufeng Wang, Mark Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Thermoelectric properties of nanocomposites are numerically studied as a function of average grain size or nanoparticle density by simulating the measurements as they would be done experimentally. In accordance with previous theoretical and experimental results, we find that the Seebeck coefficient, power factor and figure of merit, zT, can be increased by nanostructuring when energy barriers exist around the grain boundaries or embedded nanoparticles. When we simulate the performance of a thermoelectric cooler with the same material, however, we find that the maximum temperature difference is much less than expected from the given zT. This occurs because the …

Predicting The Growth Of Many Droplets During Vapor-Diffusion-Driven Dropwise Condensation Experiments Using The Point Sink Superposition Method, J. Castillo, J. A. Weibel Jan 2019

Predicting The Growth Of Many Droplets During Vapor-Diffusion-Driven Dropwise Condensation Experiments Using The Point Sink Superposition Method, J. Castillo, J. A. Weibel

CTRC Research Publications

Water vapor present in humid air will condense in the form of many small droplets on a cooled substrate. After nucleation, the diffusion of vapor from the environment to the droplets dominates their growth by condensation, and therefore, all droplets must compete for the vapor available in the surroundings. Models that assume droplets grow in isolation or as an equivalent film poorly capture their interaction during vapor-diffusion-driven condensation and do not correspond with experimental condensation rates. By treating the droplets as point sinks, the interaction between all droplets in a system can be captured by superposing the vapor distributions of …

A Permeable-Membrane Microchannel Heat Sink Made By Additive Manufacturing, I. L. Collins, J. A. Weibel, L. Pan, S V. Garimella Jan 2019

A Permeable-Membrane Microchannel Heat Sink Made By Additive Manufacturing, I. L. Collins, J. A. Weibel, L. Pan, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Microchannel heat sinks are capable of removing dense heat loads from high-power electronic devices with low thermal resistance, but suffer from high pressure drops due to the small channel dimensions. Features that reduce the pressure drop, such as manifolds, increase fabrication complexity and are constrained by traditional subtractive manufacturing approaches. Additive manufacturing technologies offer improved design freedom and reduced geometric restrictions, expanding the types of features that can be produced and integrated into a heat sink. In this work, a novel permeable membrane microchannel (PMM) heat sink geometry is proposed and fabricated using direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) of an …

A Coupled Wicking And Evaporation Model For Prediction Of Pool Boiling Critical Heat Flux On Structured Surfaces, H. Hu, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella Jan 2019

A Coupled Wicking And Evaporation Model For Prediction Of Pool Boiling Critical Heat Flux On Structured Surfaces, H. Hu, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Boiling is an effective heat transfer mechanism that is central to a variety of industrial processes including electronic systems, power plants, and nuclear reactors. Micro-/nano-structured surfaces have been demonstrated to significantly enhance the critical heat flux (CHF) during pool boiling, but there is no consensus on how to predict the structure-induced CHF enhancement. In this study, we develop an analytical model that takes into consideration key mechanisms that govern CHF during pool boiling on structured surfaces, namely, capillary wicking and evaporation of the liquid layer underneath the bubble. The model extends existing wicking-based CHF theories by introducing the competing evaporation …
