The Ambivalence Of Black Rage, Vincent Lloyd
The Ambivalence Of Black Rage, Vincent Lloyd
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Activists associated with the Black Lives Matter movement embrace anger. Owning their rage sets these activists in opposition to an older generation of black leaders, invested in respectability, who narrate anger as an emotion to be overcome. Younger activists worry about complicity with the status quo – with white supremacy – of these older activists, yet embracing anger is no surefire way of avoiding complicity with the status quo. This essay investigates the ambivalence of black anger, drawing on philosophy and feminist theory while also locating the current eruption of black anger in an ambivalent history of black political affect. …
Complicity, Dissent, And The Palestinian Intellectual, Sa'ed Atshan
Complicity, Dissent, And The Palestinian Intellectual, Sa'ed Atshan
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In this article, I draw on the major works of two Palestinian intellectuals—Edward Said and Hanan Ashrawi—and I compare the experiences of Palestinian intellectuals living in the United States with those living under Israeli military occupation in the West Bank. The writings of these two exemplary figures shape the conceptual underpinnings of my exploration of the way Palestinian academics navigate questions of complicity with the different hegemonic political systems that govern their lives. I argue that Said and Ashrawi model a steadfast refusal to be complicit in the state-led repression around them at the same time as they engage in …
Subject, Subjugation, And Subjectivity, Raef Zreik
Subject, Subjugation, And Subjectivity, Raef Zreik
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper analyzes the ways in which complicity and dissent feed and subvert one another, or the ways in which the subjugated self becomes a political subject. The formative event of Palestinian collective identity is the loss of home and homeland in the aftermath of the Nakba of 1948. “The Catastrophe” divided the Palestinian community to two: Those who remained within the borders of the Israeli state and became Israeli citizens, and the Palestinian refugees, who came to establish the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and led an armed struggle. While examining the two narratives, I also explore two communal modes …
Family Affairs: Complicity, Betrayal, And The Family In Hisham Matar's In The Country Of Men And Nadine Gordimer's My Son's Story, Lital Levy
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This essay undertakes a comparative reading of the dynamics of complicity and resistance in two contemporary Anglophone novels, Nadine Gordimer’s My Son’s Story (1990) and Hisham Matar’s In the Country of Men (2006). My analysis pursues three main lines of inquiry: the ostensible public/ private and political/ personal divides; loyalty and betrayal in the family; and the ambiguous status of the child as a witness and a political subject. I argue that in their respective portrayals of the protagonists’ struggles against South African apartheid and authoritarian rule in Libya, both authors use the device of the child narrator to expose …
Facing The Ruler, Facing The Village: On The Roads To Complicity Following Mengzi And Benda, Zvi Ben-Dor Benite
Facing The Ruler, Facing The Village: On The Roads To Complicity Following Mengzi And Benda, Zvi Ben-Dor Benite
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, “Facing the Ruler, Facing the Village,” Zvi Ben-Dor Benite seeks to broaden the boundaries of the discussion about complicity by taking it away from late 20th-century and contemporary debates about it. At the same time, he wishes to highlight the many faces that the problem of complicity could have in different historical moments. Following Czesław Miłosz, this article understands that there are many roads to complicity that have been articulated in different ways across time and space. This article is, therefore, an integrated meditation on complicity bringing together two radically distant approaches to the question. Reading the …
Remnants Of Dissent, Thomas Docherty
Remnants Of Dissent, Thomas Docherty
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, “Remnants of Dissent,” Thomas Docherty explores the relation of dissent to guilty complicity in post-war Europe. The article opens with a consideration of the position of Karl Jaspers in 1945 and examines how Jaspers worked through the various modes of guilt that flowed from diverse modes of living under Nazism. Of particular interest is the status of silence in the face of tyrannical Nazi oppression and murders. The essay explores how the workings of language, and its manipulations by the Nazis, helps to normalize such tyranny and to make resistance to it both dangerous and difficult. The …
Introduction: Complicity And Dissent, Or Why We Need Solidarity Between Struggles, Nitzan Lebovic
Introduction: Complicity And Dissent, Or Why We Need Solidarity Between Struggles, Nitzan Lebovic
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Growing pressure from politicians and corporations has thrown into question the very legitimacy of opposition and critique. A language of political affirmation has confused and misled the public, driving many to adopt a cynical attitude to politics. The result has been a rapid decline of legitimate critique, the rise of populism, and a growing tendency to squelch civil disobedience with a militarized police force. The introduction to the special issue considers the role of the complicit/dissenting intellectual in history and literature, politics and law. It explores the genealogy of the terms, as well as conditions for their appearance in our …

A report published by a group of engineering technology practitioners and others interested in engineering technology called “Engineering Technology Education in the United States” was released in early 2017. The report provided recommendations of areas for further study related to engineering technology students to increase our understanding of the population. These specifically suggested focusing on the students in comparison to other students in similar and different fields of study. Following these recommendations, a team of engineering technology education researchers has been collaborating to gather information in these areas. The team obtained institutional approval and distributed two surveys throughout the United …

An Investigation Into The Value And Benefits Of The Solidworks Certification Program, Joseph Rudy, Rustin Webster
School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
This descriptive research study explores the perceived value and benefits of the SOLIDWORKS certification program for students and working professionals. In the last decade, computer-aided design (CAD) certifications have grown in availability and popularity, and CAD software vendors and resellers have made bold claims concerning their value. However, minimal evidence-based research has been conducted to explore the actual value gained from obtaining such a certification. This study involved the use of an online survey given to a cross-sectional sample of certified SOLIDWORKS professionals located in the western region of the United States. Students, educators, and SOLIDWORKS employees and resellers were …

In the US, there are two academic pathways to a career in engineering: Engineering and Engineering Technology (ET). Engineering Technology attracts more African American and Latin American students than traditional engineering programs. Nationally, African American students are more than twice as likely to enroll in an ET program versus Engineering. We suspect it may be due to traditional Engineering programs’ requirement of higher levels of math and science classes, often lacking in under-privileged or underserved urban or rural high schools. Recently published research by the New York Equity Coalition supports this supposition. Understanding the reasons for the higher representation of …

Since no pretreatment method is foolproof for the removal of foulants in reverse osmosis (RO) systems, the aim is to keep the production process efficiency as high as possible. In the vast majority of RO desalination plants, biofouling of membranes is considered as one of the most common operational problems. In this study, a full-scale seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant which was subject to severe biofouling was investigated. Autopsy showed higher biofilm concentrations near the inlet of the module likely due to the abundancy of nutrients. A pilot-scale system including silicon carbide ultrafiltration (SiC-UF) membranes was established in order …
A Reason To Live: Hiv And Animal Companions, Vicki Hutton
A Reason To Live: Hiv And Animal Companions, Vicki Hutton
Purdue University Press Book Previews
A Reason to Live explores the human-animal relationship through the narratives of eleven people living with HIV and their animal companions. The narratives, based on a series of interviews with HIV-positive individuals and their animal companions in Australia, span the entirety of the HIV epidemic, from public awareness and discrimination in the 1980s and 1990s to survival and hope in the twenty-first century. Each narrative is explored within the context of theory (for example, attachment theory, the "biophilia hypothesis," neurochemical and neurophysiological effects, laughter, play, death anxiety, and stigma) in order to understand the unique bond between human and animal …

Early in 2017, a team of engineering technology practitioners along with others interested in the state of engineering technology published a report entitled “Engineering Technology Education in the United States.” This report garnered a list of recommendations and things that needed to be investigated to further our understanding of this student population; specifically focusing on the students and how they relate to other students studying both similar and different material. A team of like-minded engineering technology education researchers have been working together to ascertain the answers to the findings. They prepared two surveys, obtained institutional approval, and distributed it throughout …
Technical Freediving: An Emerging Breath-Hold Diving Technique, Derek Covington, Robert H. Lee, Steven Toffel, Alberto Bursian, Kirk Krack, Chris Giordano
Technical Freediving: An Emerging Breath-Hold Diving Technique, Derek Covington, Robert H. Lee, Steven Toffel, Alberto Bursian, Kirk Krack, Chris Giordano
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
Technical freediving can be defined as freediving augmented by the use of oxygen-enriched gases or oxygen before, during, or after a freedive. As a result of these techniques, breath-hold divers can visit and enjoy underwater wrecks, reefs, and other diving locations previously located at depths unreachable to apnea divers. By pre-breathing oxygen-enriched gases in conjunction with hyperventilation—which decreases the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2)—the technical freediver now has additional oxygen to facilitate aerobic respiration during the dive. In addition, pre-breathing oxygen decreases tissue nitrogen tensions, which limits inert gas loading and decreases the risk of decompression sickness (DCS). Finally, …

Why A Unit For Academic Language And Practice Should Be A Part Of A University, Kari Mari Jonsmoen
Why A Unit For Academic Language And Practice Should Be A Part Of A University, Kari Mari Jonsmoen
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The main task of a university library is to serve the teaching, learning and research needs of staff and students in higher education. However, the lecturers, students and researchers need more than a collection of sources of information provided by librarians. Globalisation in general and the universities' internationalisation policy have led to a large international researcher and student population and thus increased requirements when it comes to language proficiency, intercultural competence and teaching and learning in a multicultural environment. As a result of internationalisation and the principle of widening participation, the student population has become more heterogeneous. In 2016, the …
