Investigation Of Design Alternatives For The Subbase Of Concrete Pavements, Amy Getchell, Luis Garzon Sabogal, Philippe L. Bourdeau, Marika Santagata
JTRP Technical Reports
In all pavement structures, one or more support layers separate the pavement from the subgrade. In addition to offering structural support, these layers have several important functions, which include: providing a stable and uniform construction platform, facilitating drainage, mitigating pumping of the subgrade fines, and protecting the pavement from the effects of frost heave. Their performance is critical in achieving the desired pavement smoothness, and in extending the service life of the structure. A range of designs, making use of unbound or stabilized aggregates and in some cases geosynthetics, are employed by different agencies to fulfill these functions.

Implementing Rapid Durability Measure For Concrete Using Resistivity And Formation Factor, W. Jason Weiss, Chunyu Qiao, Burkan Isgor, Jan Olek
JTRP Technical Reports
The durability of in-place concrete is a high priority issue for concrete pavements and bridges. Several studies have been conducted by INDOT to use electrical resistivity as a measure of fluid transport properties. Resistivity is dependent on the chemistry of the cement and supplementary cementitious system used, as such it has been recommended that rather than specifying resistivity it may be more general to specify the formation factor. Samples were tested to establish the current levels of performance for concrete pavements in the state of Indiana. Temperature and moisture corrections are presented and acceptable accelerated aging procedure is presented. A …

The 2007 Great Recession is widely considered the worst economic downturn in recent United States History. In Indiana, the unemployment rate reached 10.6%, and took nearly seven years to return to pre-recession levels. However, employment data from this period shows that the change in total employment at the county level ranged from -20% to +5%, indicating that while many counties suffered from high unemployment, other counties experienced gains in total employment. Various research efforts, including this project, have been undertaken to understand the local characteristics that influence the differing degrees to which regional/city economies were able to resist or cope …

Development Of Subgrade Stabilization And Slab Undersealing Solutions For Pcc Pavements Restoration And Repairs, Ali Behnood, Jan Olek
JTRP Technical Reports
The loss of functionality and the development of distress in concrete pavements is often attributable to the poor subbase and subgrade conditions and/or loss of support due to the development of the voids underneath the slab. Subgrade soil stabilization can be used as an effective approach to restore the functionality of the subgrades in patching projects. This research had two main objectives: (1) identifying the best practices for soil stabilization of the existing subgrade during pavement patching operations and (2) identifying and developing new, modified grouting materials for slab stabilization and undersealing. Various stabilization scenarios were tested and showed improved …

Legal And Permit Loads Evaluation For Indiana Bridges, Chris Kusiak, Mark D. Bowman, Arun Prakash
JTRP Technical Reports
According to federal law, routine commercial vehicles must adhere to certain limits on their load configuration in order to operate legally on interstate highways. However, states may allow for heavier or different load configurations provided that bridges on the state and county highway system are load rated and, if necessary, posted with vehicles that appropriately represent these loads. The state of Indiana allows several classes of vehicles to operate with loads that exceed federal limits, and, presently, several LFD design loads are used to represent these exceptions as state legal loads. This study evaluates the MBE rating loads for their …

Implementing The Strut-And-Tie Method For The Design Of Bridge Components, Andi S. Vicksman, Christopher S. Williams, Merrick A. Howarth
JTRP Technical Reports
The strut-and-tie method (STM) is used for the design of D-regions (disturbed regions) of reinforced concrete structures. Many typical bridge substructure components consist of D-regions and warrant the use of the STM for design. Implementation of the STM is more complex than typical design methods, and engineers are often unfamiliar with the design process. As a result, designing using the STM is more time consuming than traditional design methods. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) identified a need for resources and tools that assist with the design of typical bridge substructure components using the STM. The primary tool created to …

Heat Pipe Dryout And Temperature Hysteresis In Response To Transient Heat Pulses Exceeding The Capillary Limit, K. Baraya, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
The balance between the capillary pressure provided by the wick in a heat pipe or vapor chamber and the flow resistance to liquid resupply at the evaporator determines the maximum heat load that can be sustained at steady state. This maximum heat load is termed as the capillary limit; operation at steady heat loads above the capillary limit will result in dryout at the evaporator wick. However, different user needs and device workloads can lead to highly transient heat loads in applications ranging from con- sumer electronic devices to server processors. In these instances, the operation of heat pipes must …

While all sectors of the economy can be impacted by climate variability and change, the agricultural sector is arguably the most tightly coupled to climate where changes in precipitation and temperature directly control plant growth and yield, as well as livestock production. This paper analyzes the direct and cascading effects of temperature, precipitation, and carbon dioxide (CO2) on agronomic and horticultural crops, and livestock production in Indiana through 2100. Due to increased frequency of drought and heat stress, models predict that the yield of contemporary corn and soybean varieties will decline by 8–21% relative to yield potential, without considering CO2 …
