Introduction To The Monstrous Global: The Effects Of Globalization On Cultures, Ju Young Jin, Jae Roe Feb 2020

Introduction To The Monstrous Global: The Effects Of Globalization On Cultures, Ju Young Jin, Jae Roe

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This special issue on “The Monstrous Global: The Effects of Globalization on Cultures” explores representations of the monstrous effects and products of globalization. The monstrous (as in The Monstrous Feminine by Barbara Creed) in this sense alludes to the ways in which local or national displays of fear and anxiety about the Other are embedded in struggles and tensions of global scale; the inability to cognitively map the effect of such global forces on local/national problems produces monstrous representations of the global. Global forces such as neoliberalism and reactionary nationalism, technology, climate change, migration and displacement lead to accelerating instability …

A Deconstructive Reading Of Taoist Influenced Chinese And American Poetry, Hong Zeng Feb 2020

A Deconstructive Reading Of Taoist Influenced Chinese And American Poetry, Hong Zeng

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article “A Deconstructive Reading of Taoist Influenced Chinese and American Poetry” Hong Zeng attempts to deconstruct the logos status of "Nature" in Chinese natural philosophy and explore the tragic potentiality of such philosophy and poetry under its influence. It also analyzes its aesthetic strategies used to overcome historical tragedy, and how such tragic potentiality in classical Chinese philosophy and poetry break out into the imagery of death and fragmentation in modern Chinese and American poetry under its influence, including poetry by such poets as Hai Zi, Gu Cheng, Robert Bly and Wallace Stevens, and how it sometimes leads …

Writing, Rewriting, And Miswriting: Eileen Chang’S Late Style Against The Grain, Lina Qu Feb 2020

Writing, Rewriting, And Miswriting: Eileen Chang’S Late Style Against The Grain, Lina Qu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article “Writing, Rewriting, and Miswriting: Eileen Chang’s Late Style Against the Grain,” Lina Qu reconstructs Eileen Chang as a Saidian late figure and formulates the poetics and politics of lateness immanent in her late self-writing. Drawing from Said’s theorization, Qu argues that Chang’s late style emerges and matures in rewriting her memories into numerous autobiographical accounts. The exposé of her dysfunctional family and turbulent life metonymically constitutes a counter narrative that disenchants Chinese modernity. In contrast to the dominant modalities of evolution and revolution, her involutionary discourse embodies a Deleuzian paradigm of artistic creativity and historical development. Qu …

Mo Yan’S Radish: Between The Real And The Surreal, Xiaoyue Li, Xuefang Feng Feb 2020

Mo Yan’S Radish: Between The Real And The Surreal, Xiaoyue Li, Xuefang Feng

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article “Mo Yan’s Radish: Between the Real and the Surreal” Xiaoyue Li and Xuefang Feng argue that Radish, a novella written by Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan skillfully combines realism with surrealism, the flexible swing between which is made possible by the choice of children’s perspective, and the effect is too significant to be ignored. Their analysis concludes that the transparent golden radish symbolizes humanity, the lack of which projects the protagonist’ sufferings, and that the surrealist description of the radish reveals the magic function of humanity in brightening up life in times of miseries.

Migrant Necropolitics At The Table: "Civilized Cannibalism" In Mahi Binebine's Cannibales, Taïeb Berrada Feb 2020

Migrant Necropolitics At The Table: "Civilized Cannibalism" In Mahi Binebine's Cannibales, Taïeb Berrada

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In Cannibales, the Maghrebi Francophone author Mahi Binebine revisits the encounter between the so-called “cannibals” and the European colonizer in the context of illegal immigration where bodies become commodities exchangeable for social improvements creating a different form of cannibalism. It is no longer the usual dichotomy between the civilized and the savage that is at work but rather a “civilized” European imperialist who feeds himself on a migrant’s flesh. This article argues that this representation works as a “colonial fragment” from the past but contextualized in today’s globalization. Binebine’s morbid depiction of an ambivalent postcolonial cannibalistic encounter translates as …

The Goddess Of Love In Sadomasochistic Costume: Roman Polanski's Venus In Fur, Alan P. Barr Feb 2020

The Goddess Of Love In Sadomasochistic Costume: Roman Polanski's Venus In Fur, Alan P. Barr

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Throughout his career as a filmmaker, Roman Polanski has circled the subject of sex, its aberrations, its delights, and its risks. His twenty feature films are remarkably varied, yet characteristically probe the compelling, contradictory, and enchanting nature of human sexual behavior. He develops a cluster of images or tropes that appear across his films—from knives to claustrophobic settings—that advance his enquiry. Venus in Fur is Polanski’s most comprehensive portrayal of the intricacies of sexual conduct, employing a theatrical setting (rehearsing an adaptation of a notorious classic novel), amplified with cultural allusions and exploring the limits of role-playing. Normality and contentment, …

The Others (2001) By Alejandro Amenábar In The Light Of Valentinian Thought, Fryderyk Kwiatkowski Feb 2020

The Others (2001) By Alejandro Amenábar In The Light Of Valentinian Thought, Fryderyk Kwiatkowski

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

The article offers a Valentinian interpretation of the Hollywood film The Others (2001). A particular attention is paid to the ways in which cinematic motifs and narrative elements of the film draw on myths, ideas and symbolic imagery present in Valentinian works, especially in the Gospel of Truth (NHC I, 3) and the Gospel of Philip (NHC II, 3). In the course of the heuristic analysis, the paper argues that although the film employs Valentinian ideas, it depicts different understanding of the world. This issue is addressed in the last part of the article by situating the film within broader …

Farmer, Priest, And Poet: Knowledge Transmission And Wisdom In Works And Days And Gelimu, Duoduo Xu Feb 2020

Farmer, Priest, And Poet: Knowledge Transmission And Wisdom In Works And Days And Gelimu, Duoduo Xu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This paper aims at a comparison between a classic poem from ancient Greek literature, the Works and Days by Hesiod, and ancestral records of hemerology from Daba Culture, entitled Gelimu, collected during my fieldwork in South-West China. Both traditions use constellations to mark important dates throughout the year, providing similar instructions on how to deal with daily work in the fields. Moreover, their mnemonic strategies and formulaic verses reflect their origins from oral traditions passed down from generation to generation. Starting from these basic similarities, the author analyzed the roles of Daba priests, the calendars authors, and Hesiod, the …

Revisiting "Home" In Ghanaian Poetry: Awoonor, Anyidoho And Adzei, Gabriel Edzordzi Agbozo Feb 2020

Revisiting "Home" In Ghanaian Poetry: Awoonor, Anyidoho And Adzei, Gabriel Edzordzi Agbozo

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

The idea of “home” is a significant occurrence in postcolonial literature, as it connects to other ideas as identity, nationhood, and culture. This paper discusses “home” in Ghanaian poetry focusing on three well-regarded poets: Kofi Awoonor, Kofi Anyidoho, and Mawuli Adzei. These poets come from the Ewe ethnic group, and engage with the Pan-African project in both their scholarly and creative expressions. Drawing on John Berger, Sara Dessen, and Ewe thought on the afterlife, this paper suggests two major types of “home” in the works of these three poets: the physical, and the metaphysical. Physical “home” refer to the Wheta …

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article provides an historical introduction to Chiara Lubich and the Focolare Movement’s work in interreligious dialogue with special attention to the Christian-Hindu dialogue. It introduces the various personalities and encounters, but also the spirit which informs this unique experience of dialogue. It makes particular use of Chiara Lubich’s diary entries in which she recounts her own discovery of dialogue as “one of the most beautiful expressions of love”. It introduces the reader to the innovative and fruitful experience of the Christian-Hindu symposiums organized between Hindu scholars and scholars associated with the Focolare Movement.

Crossing The Threshold: Mission As Encounter, Piero Coda Feb 2020

Crossing The Threshold: Mission As Encounter, Piero Coda

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

Awareness of the centrality of mission has been growing in the Catholic Church since Vatican II. The author traces this growth from Ecclesiam suam (1964) to the writings of the current pope, highlighting the link between dialogue and mission. He draws attention to some features of Francis’s message using four words: “kairos,” the “why,” “how,” and “where” of mission, and situates the ongoing dialogue between Catholics and Shia Islam within this broad framework.

The Church In Mission And The Movements, Roberto Catalano Feb 2020

The Church In Mission And The Movements, Roberto Catalano

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The blossoming of new ecclesial movements before and after Vatican II was unplanned and unforeseen. While each is unique, almost all were inspired by one person who was able to communicate their charism to thousands of others. While these communities include all the Church’s vocations, they are characterized by active laity who can enter milieus which had seemed impenetrable to the Church in the past. These communities’ personal and collective witness of life builds friendships, leading to very fruitful relationships across all boundaries— ecumenical, interreligious and secular; others feel drawn to collaborate for the good of the human family. Many …

In this article the author offers an introduction to the life, thought, and impact of Chiara Lubich. He begins with a brief biographical overview and draws attention to some important features of her spiritual teaching: Jesus in the midst, Jesus Forsaken, Mary Desolate, the four nights. He draws attention to the Economy of Communion and as an expression of this spirituality in the world of business and economics, and to the figure of Chiara Luce Badano, a young adherent to the Spirituality of Unity who has been recognized as an example of how this spirituality can lead to holiness of …

Paradise 1949 Told By Chiara In 1969, Chiara Lubich Feb 2020

Paradise 1949 Told By Chiara In 1969, Chiara Lubich

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

Chiara Lubich recounts her experience of Paradise 1949 in 1969. At the time of this account she was unaware that many of her writings from this period had been preserved. She speaks directly from her memory of the events. This is a transcription of a speech given to members of the Movement but will be of great interest to anyone interested in Paradise 1949 and complements the yet to be published canonical version of the experience composed from surviving writings from the period.

On-The-Job Information Literacy: A Case Study Of Student Employees At Purdue University Archives And Special Collections, Tracy Grimm, Neal Harmeyer Feb 2020

On-The-Job Information Literacy: A Case Study Of Student Employees At Purdue University Archives And Special Collections, Tracy Grimm, Neal Harmeyer

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

This chapter presents Purdue Archives and Special Collections as a case study in growing an organizational culture committed to teaching information literacy parallel to classroom learning through student worker experiential learning. While student employment or internships may not traditionally be considered co-curricular activities, Purdue University Archives and Special Collections provides an environment not only for students to gain pre-professional experience but also expertise, confidence, and competence in information; for many students, this preparation has resulted in careers in museums, archives, libraries, and cultural heritage institutions. The result is a new approach to student employment: one designed to establish an environment …

Nimble Tongues: Studies In Literary Translingualism, Steven G. Kellman Feb 2020

Nimble Tongues: Studies In Literary Translingualism, Steven G. Kellman

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Nimble Tongues is a collection of essays that continues Steven G. Kellman's work in the fertile field of translingualism, focusing on the phenomenon of switching languages. A series of investigations and reflections rather than a single thesis, the collection is perhaps more akin in its aims—if not accomplishment—to George Steiner’s Extraterritorial: Papers on Literature and the Language Revolution or Umberto Eco’s Travels in Hyperreality.

Topics covered include the significance of translingualism; translation and its challenges; immigrant memoirs; the autobiographies that Ariel Dorfman wrote in English and Spanish, respectively; the only feature film ever made in Esperanto; Francesca Marciano, an Italian …

Empirical Analysis Of Trends In Runway Incursions In The United States From 2001 To 2017, David C. Ison Jan 2020

Empirical Analysis Of Trends In Runway Incursions In The United States From 2001 To 2017, David C. Ison

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Runway incursions, events in which an aircraft, vehicle, or person is located on a runway surface without authorization, continue to be a constant threat to aviation safety. Previously identified on the ‘‘Most Wanted’’ list of aviation safety issues by the National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has spent significant amounts of money and effort to address runway incursions. Little empirical evidence has been collected on the effectiveness of such efforts. Moreover, the data that are available provide a confusing landscape of contradicting findings. Some FAA publications claim that runway incursions are decreasing while the evidence provided in …

A Zinc-Responsive Fluorophore Based On 5’-(P-Hydroxyphenyl)- Pyridylthiazole, Yuichiro Watanabe, Wanna Sungnoi, Andrew O. Sartorio, Matthias Zeller, Alexander Wei Jan 2020

A Zinc-Responsive Fluorophore Based On 5’-(P-Hydroxyphenyl)- Pyridylthiazole, Yuichiro Watanabe, Wanna Sungnoi, Andrew O. Sartorio, Matthias Zeller, Alexander Wei

Department of Chemistry Faculty Publications

The synthesis and photophysical properties of an ion-sensitive fluorescent compound are described, featuring 5′-(p-hydroxyphenyl)pyridylthiazole (HPPT) as a highly emissive fluorophore. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that HPPT is capable of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), with further polarization upon complexation with Zn(II). A 4′-picolyloxy–HPPT derivative was prepared and determined to form a 1 : 1 complex with Zn(NO3)2 in acetonitrile, with a Stokes shift of 137 nm (6323 cm−1) and a 67 nm bathochromic shift in emission relative to the neutral ligand, and a fluorescence quantum yield (ΦPL) of 92%. An X-ray crystal structure of the HPPT–Zn(II) complex confirmed a …

The Quandary Of Covarying: A Brief Review And Empirical Examination Of Covariate Use In Structural Neuroimaging Studies On Psychological Variables, Courtland Hyatt, Max M. Owens, Michael L. Crowe, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller Jan 2020

The Quandary Of Covarying: A Brief Review And Empirical Examination Of Covariate Use In Structural Neuroimaging Studies On Psychological Variables, Courtland Hyatt, Max M. Owens, Michael L. Crowe, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Although covarying for potential confounds or nuisance variables is common in psychological research, relatively little is known about how the inclusion of covariates may influence the relations between psychological variables and indices of brain structure. In Part 1 of the current study, we conducted a descriptive review of relevant articles from the past two years of NeuroImage in order to identify the most commonly used covariates in work of this nature. Age, sex, and intracranial volume were found to be the most commonly used covariates, although the number of covariates used ranged from 0 to 14, with 37 different covariate …

Article 1 of the US Constitution assigns the US Congress numerous responsibilities. These include creating new laws, revising existing laws, funding government programs, and conducting oversight of these programs' performance. Oversight of US Government agency space policy programs is executed by various congressional space policy committees, including the House and Senate Science Committees, Armed Services, and Appropriations Committees. These committees conduct many public hearings on space policy which invite witnesses to testify on US space policy programs and feature debate on the strengths and weaknesses of these programs. Documentation produced by these committees is widely available to the public, except …

Assessing Global Environmental Sustainability Via An Unsupervised Clustering Framework, Aiyshwariya Paulvannan Kanmani, Renee Obringer, Benjamin Rachunok, Roshanak Nateghi Jan 2020

Assessing Global Environmental Sustainability Via An Unsupervised Clustering Framework, Aiyshwariya Paulvannan Kanmani, Renee Obringer, Benjamin Rachunok, Roshanak Nateghi

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

The importance of sustainable development has risen in recent years due to the significant number of people affected by lack of access to essential resources as well as the need to prepare for and adapt to intensifying climate change and rapid urbanization. Modeling frameworks capable of effectively assessing and tracking sustainability lie at the heart of creating effective policies to address these issues. Conventional frameworks, such as the Environmental Performance Index (EPI), that support such policies often involve ranking countries based on a weighted sum of a number of relevant environmental metrics. However, the selection and weighing processes are often …
