A Methodology For Incorporating The Effect Of Grain Size On The Energy Efficiency Coefficient For Fatigue Crack Initiation Estimation In Polycrystalline Metal, Chun-Yu Ou, Rohit Voothaluru, C. Richard Liu
A Methodology For Incorporating The Effect Of Grain Size On The Energy Efficiency Coefficient For Fatigue Crack Initiation Estimation In Polycrystalline Metal, Chun-Yu Ou, Rohit Voothaluru, C. Richard Liu
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Estimating fatigue crack initiation of applied loading is challenging due to the large number of individual entities within a microstructure that could affect the accumulation of dislocations. In order to improve the prediction accuracy of fatigue crack initiation models, it is essential to accurately compute the energy dissipated into the microstructure per fatigue loading cycle. The extent of the energy dissipated within the microstructure as a fraction of the overall energy imparted by loading has previously been defined as the ‘energy efficiency coefficient’. This work studied the energy efficiency coefficient as a factor in the measurement of accumulated plastic strain …
Desperately Seeking Sustainable Careers: Redesigning Professional Jobs For The Collaborative Crafting Of Reduced-Load Work, Ellen Ernst Kossek, Ariane Ollier-Malaterre
Desperately Seeking Sustainable Careers: Redesigning Professional Jobs For The Collaborative Crafting Of Reduced-Load Work, Ellen Ernst Kossek, Ariane Ollier-Malaterre
Department of Management Faculty Publications
Reduced-load (RL) work, a flexible customized form of part-time work in which a full-time job is redesigned to reduce the hours and the workload while taking a pay cut, can enable sustainable careers. Yet previous research suggests mixed results, with RL work facing implementation hurdles such as insufficient workload reduction, and stalled careers often adversely affecting women and caregivers. This study, therefore, focuses on the implementation of sustainable RL work and sheds light on key issues under-examined in prior studies: 1) the job redesign tactics that supervising managers implement to reduce workloads, and 2) shared responsibilities at the job and …

Psychopathic Boldness: Narcissism, Self-Esteem, Or Something In Between?, Joshua D. Miller, Chelsea E. Sleep, Michael L. Crowe, Donald R. Lynam
Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications
Although psychopathy is one of the most studied and well-validated personality disorders, debate remains regarding the necessity and sufficiency of fearless dominance/boldness. This debate revolves around the robust relations boldness shares with adaptive outcomes (e.g., self-esteem) and the limited relations it evinces with psychopathy's other features and outcomes. Although boldness exhibits moderate to large relations with grandiose narcissism, these relations are less frequently examined at the factor level. The present study examines the relations between psychopathic boldness, narcissism, and other adaptive features in a large, MTurk sample (N = 591). While boldness exhibited moderate to large relations with grandiose narcissism, …

The deep and exciting history of garden zinnias pieces together a tale involving Aztecs, Spanish conquistadors, people of faith, people of medicine, explorers, scientists, writers, botanists, painters, and gardeners. The trail leads from the halls of Moctezuma to a cliff-diving prime minister; from Handel, Mozart, and Rossini to Gilbert and Sullivan; from a little-known confession …
John Houbolt: The Unsung Hero Of The Apollo Moon Landings, William F. Causey
John Houbolt: The Unsung Hero Of The Apollo Moon Landings, William F. Causey
Purdue University Press Book Previews
In May 1961, President Kennedy announced that the United States would attempt to land a man on the moon and return him safely to the earth before the end of that decade. Yet NASA did not have a specific plan for how to accomplish that goal. Over the next fourteen months, NASA vigorously debated several options. At first the consensus was to send one big rocket with several astronauts to the moon, land and explore, and then take off and return the astronauts to earth in the same vehicle. Another idea involved launching several smaller Saturn V rockets into the …
Cats And Conservationists: The Debate Over Who Owns The Outdoors, Dara M. Wald, Anna L. Peterson
Cats And Conservationists: The Debate Over Who Owns The Outdoors, Dara M. Wald, Anna L. Peterson
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Cats and Conservationists is the first multidisciplinary analysis of the heated debate about free-roaming cats. The debate pits conservationists against cat lovers, who disagree both on the ecological damage caused by the cats and the best way to manage them. An impassioned and spirited conflict, it also sheds light on larger questions about how we interpret science, incorporate diverse perspectives, and balance competing values in order to encourage constructive dialogue on contentious social and environmental issues.
On one side of the cat debate stand many environmentalists, especially birders and conservation organizations, who believe that outdoor cats seriously threaten native wildlife. …

Antioxidant Capacity Of Thistle (Cirsium Japonicum) In Various Drying Methods And Their Protection Effect On Neuronal Pc12 Cells And Caenorhabditis Elegans, Miran Jang, Kee Hong Kim, Gun-Hee Kim
Department of Food Science Faculty Publications
The aim of this study was, firstly, to evaluate the phenol profile of thistle (Cirsium japonicum, CJ) by High performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization–mass spectrometry (HPLC–ESI–MS), dried by different methods (90 ◦C hot-air, 70 ◦C hot-air, shade-, and freeze-drying). Secondly, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between phenolic compounds content and antioxidant properties. CJ contained chlorogenic acid, linarin, and pectolinarin. Total phenolic contents of CJ significantly decreased under hot-air-drying condition, especially chlorogenic acid contents in CJ have been reduced by 85% and 60% for 90 ◦C and 70 ◦C hot-air-drying, respectively. We evaluated the protective effect on adrenal pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells …
Evaluation Of ‘Mortgage Lifter’ Tomato For High Tunnel Production, Lewis Jett
Evaluation Of ‘Mortgage Lifter’ Tomato For High Tunnel Production, Lewis Jett
Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports
The ‘Mortgage Lifter’ tomato has historical roots in West Virginia and central Appalachia. The strain which is most often associated with West Virginia is the ‘Radiator Charlie Mortgage Lifter’ which is a red to pink beefsteak slicing tomato (Figure 1). In 2018, several heritage tomato varieties were evaluated within high tunnels in West Virginia. High Tunnels significantly improved yield and quality of all varieties, and ‘Mortgage Lifter’ had marketable yields comparable to hybrid tomato cultivars. Wholesale marketing high tunnel tomatoes is usually not profitable but concentrating on unique, heritage varieties with high flavor for direct marketing is the best strategy …
Fearless Dominance/Boldness Is Not Strongly Related To Externalizing Behaviors: An Item Response-Based Analysis, Michael L. Crowe, Brandon M. Weiss, Chelsea E. Sleep, Alexandra M. Harriss, Nathan T. Carter, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller
Fearless Dominance/Boldness Is Not Strongly Related To Externalizing Behaviors: An Item Response-Based Analysis, Michael L. Crowe, Brandon M. Weiss, Chelsea E. Sleep, Alexandra M. Harriss, Nathan T. Carter, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller
Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications
There is substantial and ongoing debate regarding the centrality of Fearless Dominance/Boldness (FD/B) to psychopathic personality due, in part, to its generally weak relations with externalizing behaviors. In response to these findings, proponents of FD/B have offered two hypotheses. First, FD/B may have nonlinear associations with externalizing outcomes such that FD/B may lead to resilience at moderate levels, but an overabundance of FD/B will yield maladaptive behavioral outcomes. Second, FD/B may be related to antisocial outcomes when paired with high scores on other psychopathic traits such as self-centered impulsivity, meanness, or disinhibition. The current study tests these two possibilities using …
A Practical Approach To Safety Management Of County Roads, Thomas Hall, Andrew Tarko
A Practical Approach To Safety Management Of County Roads, Thomas Hall, Andrew Tarko
Purdue Road School
Rural roads are well-documented as having a greater traffic fatality rate than urban roads. For medium- and high-volume rural roads with a considerable crash history, previous studies have focused on the identification of high-crash locations. The majority of rural roads in Indiana are low-volume county roads. However, the methods for identifying safety problems on medium- and high-volume roads are often not suitable for county roads. Such methods may result in improper allocation of resources for safety upgrades to only the particular locations which experienced crashes, not necessarily where the crash risk is greatest. For example, there may be hazards on …

Nimble Tongues: Studies In Literary Translingualism, Steven G. Kellman
Comparative Cultural Studies
Nimble Tongues is a collection of essays that continues Steven G. Kellman's work in the fertile field of translingualism, focusing on the phenomenon of switching languages. A series of investigations and reflections rather than a single thesis, the collection is perhaps more akin in its aims—if not accomplishment—to George Steiner’s Extraterritorial: Papers on Literature and the Language Revolution or Umberto Eco’s Travels in Hyperreality.
Topics covered include the significance of translingualism; translation and its challenges; immigrant memoirs; the autobiographies that Ariel Dorfman wrote in English and Spanish, respectively; the only feature film ever made in Esperanto; Francesca Marciano, an …

Maintenance Motives For Physical Activity Among Older Adults: A Protocol For A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Mary Katherine Huffman, Jason Brian Reed, Theresa Carpenter, Steve Amireault
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Introduction Physical activity (PA) is an important aspect for health and well-being, yet many older adults do not maintain their PA long term. The identification of key factors that are associated with, and likely causally related to, older adults’ PA maintenance is a crucial first step towards developing programmes that are effective at promoting long-term PA behaviour change. The purpose of this protocol is to outline a systematic review that will examine the relationship between four motives (ie, satisfaction, enjoyment, self-determination and identity) and older adults’ PA maintenance.
Methods and analysis Studies that investigated PA maintenance with a sample mean …

To prevent that, it is imperative to efficiently monitor the urban underground infrastructure. The combination of sensors system and wireless underground communication system can be used to realize urban underground IoT applications, e.g., storm water and wastewater overflow monitoring systems. The aim of this article is to establish a feasibility of the use of wireless underground communications techniques, and wave propagation through the subsurface soil and asphalt layers, in an underground pavement system for storm water and sewer overflow monitoring application. …
Postinternet Art Of The Moving Image And The Disjunctures Of The Global And The Local: Kim Hee-Cheon And Other Young East Asian Artists, Jihoon Kim
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Jihoon Kim discusses in his "Postinternet Art of the Moving Image and the Disjunctures of the Global and the Local: Kim Hee-cheon and Other Young East Asian Artists” ways in which moving image works by East Asian artists Chen Chen-yu, Lu Yang, and Kim Hee-cheon engage the postinternet condition, a situation in which the internet and digital technologies are no longer perceived as new but as fundamentally restructuring our subjectivity and world. By opening a platform for intersecting the postinternet condition with a discourse on globalization, which has yet to be fully discussed in the existing Western-centric discourses on postinternet …
Sewing Lives: Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein And The Global Garment Industry, Sarah Garland
Sewing Lives: Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein And The Global Garment Industry, Sarah Garland
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper takes Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and uses it as an extended metaphor to investigate the points of destructive alienation and disassociation within the globalized consumption of clothing. The promise of new clothing is a set of garments that function like Victor’s dream of creation; materials are stitched together to give objects that match our closest-held ideals. And yet, because of our quick Victor-Frankenstein-like alienation from these ‘fast fashion’ objects when they no longer please us, clothing becomes, like the monster, an abjected figure for waste and shame, moving around the globe destructively, created from the bodies of the poor …
Rethinking The Monstrous: Gender, Otherness, And Space In The Cinematic Storytelling Of Arrival And The Shape Of Water, Edward Chamberlain
Rethinking The Monstrous: Gender, Otherness, And Space In The Cinematic Storytelling Of Arrival And The Shape Of Water, Edward Chamberlain
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Through comparing the Hollywood films Arrival and The Shape of Water, this article explicates the films’ similar portrayals of gender, social collaboration, and monstrosity. Although the mainstream media in the United States has linked the idea of the monstrous to larger global forces, the two films suggest that “the monster” exists much closer to home. Hence, this article makes the case that monstrosity occurs in a variety of formulations such as the actions of national authorities like governmental officials that oppress and endanger a myriad of American citizens as well as newcomers. Further, this article makes the case that …
Performing The Global: The Mediated Mobility Of Virtual Cosmopolitans, Hye Jean Chung
Performing The Global: The Mediated Mobility Of Virtual Cosmopolitans, Hye Jean Chung
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article examines how contemporary media art and popular culture, vernacular cultural practices, and digital technologies express and actualize aspirations for global mobility. This task is propelled by the need to question the limited scope of how we envision globalization. Here I explore how people use forms of visual media to “perform the global” through mediated experiences of mobility. I propose the concept of “virtual cosmopolitans” to describe those who participate in the experience of global citizenship through their use of photography, film, and digital media. Although they do not have access to conventional forms of cosmopolitan mobility, these virtual …
Making The Global Visible: Charting The Uneven Development Of Global Monsters In Bong Joon-Ho’S Okja And Nacho Vigalondo’S Colossal, Ju Young Jin
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her essay, “Making the Global Visible: Charting the Uneven Development of Global Monsters in Bong Joon-Ho’s Okja and Nacho Vigalondo’s Colossal,” Ju Young Jin examines the entanglement of the global and the monstrous in two recent films that position Korea on the cusp between Cold War politics and global capitalism: Bong Joon-Ho’s Okja and Nacho Vigalondo’s Colossal. The Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho and Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo offer viewers films that challenge conventional notions of monster by fusing it with a coming-of-age plot of the female protagonist that takes place on a global scale, which contests the …
A Thin Line Between Sovereign And Abject Agents: Global Action Thrillers With The Sci-Fi Mind-Game War On Terror, Seung-Hoon Jeong
A Thin Line Between Sovereign And Abject Agents: Global Action Thrillers With The Sci-Fi Mind-Game War On Terror, Seung-Hoon Jeong
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Seung-hoon Jeong discusses in his paper global action thrillers about the war on terror. He highlights the biopolitical abjection of counterterrorist agents from their state agencies. This abjection ends up either self-reaffirming in the manner of a sovereign agent (the Bond series) or terrorizing their sovereign system (the Bourne series), while both are trapped in the vicious cycle of terror and counterterror. More notable is the “mind-game” sci-fi genre. Source Code, among others, stages a loop of a traumatic counterterrorist mission with retroactive causality, a closed circuit of neoliberal productivity and pathological abjection in a video-game narrative. The time-travel …
"The Headwaters Of A River Of Failure": Detroit As An Icon Of American Decline, Jae H. Roe
"The Headwaters Of A River Of Failure": Detroit As An Icon Of American Decline, Jae H. Roe
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This essay analyzes films (8 Mile, Gran Torino, It Follows) and television series (Hung, Low Winter Sun) that use the setting of Detroit to depict characters who are dealing with deteriorating socioeconomic conditions and whose choices and relationships reflect their difficulties in, and anxieties about, adjusting to such conditions. While the familiar icons of Detroit's decline appear in all of these texts, the narratives evolve from working class realism to satire and ultimately horror, or from anxieties about white working class displacement to the displacement of such anxieties. The history of Detroit illustrates the complex ways …
Monstrous Accumulation: Topographies Of Fear In An Era Of Globalization, Robert T. Tally Jr.
Monstrous Accumulation: Topographies Of Fear In An Era Of Globalization, Robert T. Tally Jr.
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The predominance of the horror genre, broadly conceived, in recent years attests to the profound sense of anxiety and dread permeating late capitalist societies. As the processes and effects of globalization become more viscerally experienced, they are also often rendered invisible or unknowable, and individuals and groups find themselves subject to an immense array of forces beyond their control. The contemporary scene is crowded with monsters, from alien invaders to the zombie apocalypse, set against the backdrop of darkly fantastic landscapes and dystopian visions. Drawing upon a variety of Marxist cultural theory, Robert T. Tally Jr. explores the topographies of …
