Who Is Welcome Here? A Culturally Responsive Content Analysis Of Makerspace Websites, Hannah Kye
Who Is Welcome Here? A Culturally Responsive Content Analysis Of Makerspace Websites, Hannah Kye
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Makerspaces and maker education are widely seen as means to democratize science and engineering education. A small but growing body of scholarly work warns against this assumption and calls for an explicit focus on equity in makerspaces both online and in person. With an understanding of learning as a social and cultural process, this paper proposes that disrupting the cycle of racial and cultural inequity in science education requires makerspace educators and staff to ground their work in multicultural theories and practices. In particular, culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) provides guidance for infusing science and engineering with equity approaches in order …

A Panorama Of Human-Animal Interactions Research: Bibliometric Analysis Of Hai Articles 1982-2018, Jane Kinkus Yatcilla
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
What can we know about human-animal interactions (HAI) research by looking at information about its research articles, such as publication information, text of abstracts or author keywords, or citation patterns? Bibliometric analysis, the quantification of information about published articles, is a tool we can use to gain a perspective of the status of research in a particular field. In this study, information about four decades of HAI research publications was obtained from the multidisciplinary research database Web of Science Core Collection, and analyzed to look for informative patterns about this body of research using Microsoft Excel and VantagePoint text …
The Gcn5 Complexes In Drosophila As A Model For Metazoa, Eliana F. Torres-Zelada, Vikki M. Weake
The Gcn5 Complexes In Drosophila As A Model For Metazoa, Eliana F. Torres-Zelada, Vikki M. Weake
Department of Biochemistry Faculty Publications
The histone acetyltransferase Gcn5 is conserved throughout eukaryotes where it functions as part of large multi-subunit transcriptional coactivator complexes that stimulate gene expression. Here, we describe how studies in the model insect Drosophila melanogaster have provided insight into the essential roles played by Gcn5 in the development of multicellular organisms. We outline the composition and activity of the four different Gcn5 complexes in Drosophila: the Spt-Ada-Gcn5 Acetyltransferase (SAGA), Ada2a-containing (ATAC), Ada2/Gcn5/Ada3 transcription activator (ADA), and Chiffon Histone Acetyltransferase (CHAT) complexes. Whereas the SAGA and ADA complexes are also present in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, ATAC has only been …

Metazoans contain two homologs of the Gcn5-binding protein Ada2, Ada2a and Ada2b, which nucleate formation of the ATAC and SAGA complexes respectively. In Drosophila melanogaster, there are two splice isoforms of Ada2b: Ada2b-PA and Ada2b-PB. Here we show only the Ada2b-PB isoform is in SAGA; in contrast, Ada2b-PA associates with Gcn5, Ada3, Sgf29 and Chiffon forming the Chiffon Histone Acetyltransferase (CHAT) complex. Chiffon is theDrosophila ortholog of Dbf4, which binds and activates the cell cycle kinase Cdc7 to initiate DNA replication. In flies, Chiffon and Cdc7 are required in ovary follicle cells for gene amplification, a specialized form of DNA …

#Goingtothefair: A Social Media Listening Analysis Of Agricultural Fairs, Julie A. Mahoney, Nicole Olynk Widmar, Courtney Bir
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
Agricultural fairs provide one of the last frontiers, and largest stages, for showcasing livestock agriculture to the public. However, public funding, attendance revenue, animal biosecurity, and public health concerns are all aspects worthy of conversation and increased research attention given the interaction between livestock animals and the general public in fair and festival settings. A prominent social media listening and data analytics platform was used to quantify online and social media chatter concerning agricultural fairs during a 27-mo period. A general search for online media referencing agricultural fair keywords was designed; social and online media mentions of agricultural fairs ( …

Access to credible estimates of water-use are critical for making optimal operational de-15 cisions and investment plans to ensure reliable and affordable provisioning of water. Fur-16 thermore, identifying the key predictors of water use is important for regulators to pro-17 mote sustainable development policies to reduce water use. In this paper, we propose18 a data-driven framework, grounded in statistical learning theory, to develop a rigorously19 evaluated predictive model of state-level, per capita water use in the US as a function20 of various geographic, climatic and socioeconomic variables. Specifically, we compare the21 accuracy of various statistical methods in predicting the state-level, …

Deep learning networks have achieved great success in many areas such as in large scale image processing. They usually need large computing resources and time, and process easy and hard samples inefficiently in the same way. Another undesirable problem is that the network generally needs to be retrained to learn new incoming data. Efforts have been made to reduce the computing resources and realize incremental learning by adjusting architectures, such as scalable effort classifiers, multi-grained cascade forest (gc forest), conditional deep learning (CDL), tree CNN, decision tree structure with knowledge transfer (ERDK), forest of decision trees with RBF networks and …
Asymmetrical Response Of California Electricity Demand To Summer-Time Temperature Variation, Rohini Kumar, Benjamin A. Rachunok, Debora Maia-Silva, Roshanak Nateghi
Asymmetrical Response Of California Electricity Demand To Summer-Time Temperature Variation, Rohini Kumar, Benjamin A. Rachunok, Debora Maia-Silva, Roshanak Nateghi
School of Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications
Current projections of the climate-sensitive portion of residential electricity demand are based on estimating the temperature response of the mean of the demand distribution. In this work, we show that there is significant asymmetry in the summer-time temperature response of electricity demand in the state of California, with high-intensity demand demonstrating a greater sensitivity to temperature increases. The greater climate sensitivity of high-intensity demand is found not only in the observed data, but also in the projections in the near future (2021–2040) and far future periods (2081–2099), and across all (three) utility service regions in California. We illustrate that disregarding …
Lifestyle Intervention’S Effect And Predictive Value On Weight Loss For University Employees, Elizabeth Wang, Azza H. Ahmed, Pi-Ju Liu, Elizabeth A. Richards
Lifestyle Intervention’S Effect And Predictive Value On Weight Loss For University Employees, Elizabeth Wang, Azza H. Ahmed, Pi-Ju Liu, Elizabeth A. Richards

Obesity is a costly and pervasive risk factor that requires attention to reduce chronic disease rates. This study evaluated the effect of a lifestyle medicine intervention, Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP), on reducing weight, blood pressure, lipid levels, and hemoglobin A1c. A secondary aim was to build a preliminary predictive model for computing new participants’ potential weight change from CHIP. We evaluated pre- and post-intervention biometric data of 68 individuals who completed a 10-week CHIP intervention at a Midwestern university clinic. Significant reductions (p < 0.05) were observed in weight, diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and A1c. Regression analyses indicated that the best linear model for predicting change in weight was a one-predictor model with systolic blood pressure. The CHIP intervention effectively promoted weight loss and meaningful reductions in chronic disease risk factors. Larger samples are needed for future regression analyses to create a more robust linear model.
Noise Source Identification And Noise Directivity Analysis Of Bladeless Fans By Combined Cfd And Caa Method, Ang Li, Jun Chen, Yangfan Liu, J Stuart Bolton, Patricia Davies
Noise Source Identification And Noise Directivity Analysis Of Bladeless Fans By Combined Cfd And Caa Method, Ang Li, Jun Chen, Yangfan Liu, J Stuart Bolton, Patricia Davies
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
The bladeless fan is a new concept of fan that does not have visible impellers. It features low noise level, uniform airflow, and improved safety. It has been widely applied in household appliances. Since the customers are particularly sensitive to the noise generated by the fan, the aeroacoustics performance of the fan needs to be accurately characterized in the design stage. In this study, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) and computational aeroacoustics (CAA) are applied to investigate the aeroacoustics performance and identify the major noise source of the bladeless fan. A prototype of the bladeless fan, including a wind channel, a …

A View Of Democracy In And For China From A Deweyan Perspective, Hui Xie
A View Of Democracy In And For China From A Deweyan Perspective, Hui Xie
Education and Culture
In light of decades of formal denouncement of Deweyan ideas in China and the increasingly authoritarian practices under its current leadership, the recent revival of engagement with Dewey’s work among Chinese educators and intellectuals appears extraordinary as well as paradoxical. How is it possible that a project as ardently democratic as Dewey’s could gain popularity (and potential sustainability) in what appears to be a consistently nondemocratic regime? As we celebrate the centennial of Dewey’s visit to China and the substantial resurgence of his philosophy there, the trajectory of these promising signs cannot be determined without also digging into the enigma …
The Students' Experience Evolution In Chinese Schools, Weisheng Li
The Students' Experience Evolution In Chinese Schools, Weisheng Li
Education and Culture
In this essay, we focus on how Chinese students’ experience emerged and evolved in the educational activities of the twenty-first century, one hundred years after John Dewey’s visit to China. With the help of a case study, I find that (1) the individual’s experience is lived and understood in combination with others’ lives; (2) democratic dialogue is a concrete way of democratic life; and (3) the teacher is more of an escort than a trainer in the evolution of the students’ experience systems.

What Will Confucius Say To Dewey?, Yuhua Bu, Yuanyuan Zu
Education and Culture
Between 1919–1920, while giving a series of speeches in China, John Dewey raised a doubt about Chinese education: Can Chinese education cultivate children with independent consciousness? Based on the sevenyear “Reciprocal Learning in Teacher Education and School Education between Canada and China” project, we have the answer to Dewey’s doubt. In the 1990s, Chinese education could not respond affirmatively to Dewey’s question, but after forty years of reform and development, Chinese education has taken a big step forward in cultivating children with independent consciousness. However, Canada’s school education is, at present, better at cultivating self-determined and independent children in daily …
