Detroit’S Water Wars: Race, Failing Social Reproduction, And Infrastructure, Brian Whitener
Detroit’S Water Wars: Race, Failing Social Reproduction, And Infrastructure, Brian Whitener
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In this essay, I theorize an emergent urban power dynamic of infrastructural resource grabs or the use of state power to transfer infrastructural resources away from marginalized, racialized, and/or precariously documented populations. As a transfer, rather than a set of cuts or privatizations, I argue this dynamic is distinct from those of neoliberal or “shrinking” states and is a direct attack on the social reproduction capacity of communities and individuals. Focusing on the case of Detroit, where predominantly white suburban elites succeeded under the cover of Detroit’s 2013-14 bankruptcy proceedings to pry the possession of the water and sewage infrastructure …
No Estamos Todas, Faltan Las Presas! Contemporary Feminist Practices Building Paths Toward Prison Abolition, Susana Draper
No Estamos Todas, Faltan Las Presas! Contemporary Feminist Practices Building Paths Toward Prison Abolition, Susana Draper
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article focuses on a small but crucial aspect of the question of gendered violence and the multiple injustices that feminist mobilizations have once again brought into mainstream discussion: how do we find ways out of women’s imprisonment and stop the abusive violence that permeates institutional and domestic spheres without relying on those same forms of violence as a solution to the problems we face? This is a question that comes from a long history of knowledge-praxis created by groups of radical Black feminist women, and women of color, trans, and queer people, working together on the problematization of gendered …
Toward An Ecology Of Life-Making: The Re-Membering Of Meridel Le Sueur, Rosemary Hennessy
Toward An Ecology Of Life-Making: The Re-Membering Of Meridel Le Sueur, Rosemary Hennessy
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This essay advances Marxist feminism’s attention to social reproduction in order to account more fully for the relations that support life-making. The ecology of life-making is, I argue, an under-developed facet of social reproduction theory and an extension of its reach. I begin by clarifying social reproduction theory’s explanations of the value of reproductive labor time to life-making. I then turn to feminist political ecology’s attention to capital’s deregulation of life and to Native feminist onto-epistemologies as they expand the material history of capital’s theft of time and imposition of embodied debt. In the essay’s final section, I consider the …
Fourier, Marx, And Social Reproduction, Blanca Missé
Fourier, Marx, And Social Reproduction, Blanca Missé
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article establishes a conversation between the work of materialist socialist Charles Fourier and Marxist social reproduction theory (SRT). SRT has laid the ground to explore who produces the producer, in order to analyze and integrate the role of reproductive labor into a comprehensive Marxist view of the capitalist economy. In the context of the critical re-appraisal of the labor of social reproduction, Fourier offers a key materialist perspective which is also present in Marx: the identity between labor and desire in the socialist project. Fourier's materialism, I show, greatly influenced both Marx and Engels, for whom labor was also …
Labor Valorization And Social Reproduction: What Is Valuable About The Labor Theory Of Value?, Kate Doyle Griffiths
Labor Valorization And Social Reproduction: What Is Valuable About The Labor Theory Of Value?, Kate Doyle Griffiths
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article argues that Social Reproduction Theory (SRT) is the trend best positioned for further developing classical Marxist accounts of the labor theory of value, through a concrete historical account of the family as a capitalist institution. To do so, it traces debates about value within and beyond the range of Marxist-feminist accounts of labor, of the strike tactic and of circulation. These debates include the revival of demands for “wages for housework” and the call for a politics of the commons by Silvia Federici and David Harvey. In particular, Amy D’Aths articulation of a social reproduction account of value …
Social Reproduction Theory And The Form Of Labor Power, Aaron Jaffe
Social Reproduction Theory And The Form Of Labor Power, Aaron Jaffe
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Social Reproduction Theory (SRT) centers the production and reproduction of labor power under capitalism. This power to labor is determined individually, socially, and in relation to the totality of capital. These powers are produced and reproduced in and through social relations that, while capitalist, have tremendously diverse local conditions and histories. SRT provides a framework to think through the oppressive logics shaping the production, reproduction, and potencies of labor powers understood as diversely constituted. It argues that SRT is committed to the diversity of these labor powers over and against conditions that constrain both these powers and their actualizations in …
Social Reproduction In The Making: Recentering The Margins, Expanding The Directions, Zhivka Valiavicharska
Social Reproduction In The Making: Recentering The Margins, Expanding The Directions, Zhivka Valiavicharska
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This essay aims to broaden existing historical narratives of social reproduction by revisiting Black-feminist, postcolonial feminist, and migrant diasporic writings on social reproduction from the 1970s onwards. Centering on the historical experience of women of color, migrant communities, and women in postcolonial contexts and other parts of the world, these writings develop much-needed critiques of dominant social reproduction themes developed in the capitalist contexts in Western Europe and North America. These alternative feminist methodologies and historical accounts add important correctives to what is becoming the main corpus of social reproduction theory and its historiography today. They contain political potentials that …
The Politics Of Social Reproduction. An Introduction, Cinzia Arruzza, Kelly Gawel
The Politics Of Social Reproduction. An Introduction, Cinzia Arruzza, Kelly Gawel
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This introduction speaks to political struggle and transformation on the terrain of social reproduction, as presented by the contributors to this special edition of CLCWeb. The concerns of this special issue include critical analysis of international, national and local policies contributing to the gendered, class and racialized dimensions of social reproduction; the articulation of mass movements around social reproductive needs and demands; insurgent forms of care, commoning and autonomous life-making from below and from the margins; the imbrication of immigration, racialization and social reproduction; coalition building between labor and reproductive struggles; ecological and human life between and beyond capitalist forms, …
Investigation Of The Split In The Fundamental Air-Cavity Mode Of Loaded Tires, Won Hong Choi, J Stuart Bolton
Investigation Of The Split In The Fundamental Air-Cavity Mode Of Loaded Tires, Won Hong Choi, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
It is well known that a tire’s fundamental air-cavity mode, typically near 200 Hz for current passenger car tires, can split into two adjacent features when a tire is loaded and hence deformed, thus creating a fore-aft, horizontal mode and a vertical mode. This split happens because the deformed tires is no longer geometrically symmetric: the air channel in the bottom region of the tire is narrowed, hence effectively increasing the inertia in that region, and thus causing the fore-aft mode, which has a relatively large particle velocity in the bottom part of the tire, to have a lower natural …

The Making Of A Caribbean Avant-Garde: Postmodernism As Post-Nationalism, Therese Kaspersen Hadchity
The Making Of A Caribbean Avant-Garde: Postmodernism As Post-Nationalism, Therese Kaspersen Hadchity
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Focusing on the Anglophone Caribbean, The Making of a Caribbean Avant-Garde describes the rise and gradual consolidation of the visual arts avant-garde, which came to local and international attention in the 1990s. The book is centered on the critical and aesthetic strategies employed by this avant-garde to repudiate the previous generation’s commitment to modernism and anti-colonialism. In three sections, it highlights the many converging factors, which have pushed this avant-garde to the forefront of the region’s contemporary scene, and places it all in the context of growing dissatisfaction with the post-colonial state and its cultural policies.
This generational transition has …

This report summarizes the results from FEMA P695 analytical studies conducted to verify the seismic design factors for composite plate shear walls – concrete filled (C-PSW/CF), also referred to as Speedcore. ASCE 7-16 provides the seismic design factors, which include the seismic response modification factor, R, deflection amplification factor, Cd, and overstrength factor, Ωo, for various approved seismic systems. C-PSW/CFs are assigned a response modification factor of 6.5, a deflection amplification factor of 5.5, and an overstrength factor of 2.5 for C-PSW/CFs. These seismic design factors were selected based on the seismic performance of similar structural …
Development And Application Of Dual Form Conic Formulation Of Multichannel Active Noise Control Filter Design Problem In Frequency Domain, Yongjie Zhuang, Yangfan Liu
Development And Application Of Dual Form Conic Formulation Of Multichannel Active Noise Control Filter Design Problem In Frequency Domain, Yongjie Zhuang, Yangfan Liu
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Active noise control filter design methods can be categorized as time-domain or frequency-domain methods. When multiple frequency-dependent constraints need to be specified, such as the enhancement constraint, stability constraint, and robustness constraint, the optimal filter coefficients can be obtained more conveniently by solving a constrained optimization problem formulated using frequency-domain methods. However, the computational load for searching the global optimal solution is significantly high, if the number of channels, filter coefficients, or constraints is large. To improve computational efficiency, some previous work relaxed the traditional formulation to a convex problem, and then reformulated it to a cone programming problem. After …
Don Quixote And Catholicism: Rereading Cervantine Spirituality, Michael J. Mcgrath
Don Quixote And Catholicism: Rereading Cervantine Spirituality, Michael J. Mcgrath
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Four hundred years since its publication, Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote continues to inspire and to challenge its readers. The universal and timeless appeal of the novel, however, has distanced its hero from its author and its author from his own life and the time in which he lived. The discussion of the novel’s Catholic identity, therefore, is based on a reading that returns Cervantes’s hero to Cervantes’s text and Cervantes to the events that most shaped his life. The authors and texts McGrath cites, as well as his arguments and interpretations, are mediated by his religious sensibility. Consequently, he …

Interactional Research Into Problem-Based Learning, Susan M. Bridges, Rintaro Imafuku
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Problem-based learning (PBL) has been deployed as a student-centered instructional approach and curriculum design in a wide range of academic fields across the world. The majority of educational research to date has focused on knowledge-based outcomes addressing why PBL is useful. Researchers of PBL are developing a growing interest in qualitative research with a process-driven orientation to examining learning interactions. It is essential to broaden this research base so as to support PBL designs and approaches to leading students into higher-order thinking and a deeper approach to learning.
Interactional Research Into Problem-Based Learning explores how students learn in an inquiry-led …
Library Technical Services: Adapting To A Changing Environment, Stacey Marien
Library Technical Services: Adapting To A Changing Environment, Stacey Marien
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Libraries are experiencing major changes concerning the role of technical services. Technical services librarians also are being challenged about their relevance and role, sometimes revealed by a lack of understanding of the contribution technical services librarians make to building and curating library and archival collections. The threats are real: relocation from central facilities, the dramatic shift to electronic resources, budgetary constraints, and outsourced processing. As a result, technical services departments are reinventing themselves to respond to these and similar challenges while embracing innovative methods and opportunities to advance librarianship in the twenty-first century. Library Technical Services provides case studies that …

Covid-19 - Revealing Unaddressed Systemic Barriers In The 45th Anniversary Of The Southeast Asian American Experience, Quyen T. Dinh, Katrina D. Mariategue, Anna H. Byon
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
2020 marks the 45th year anniversary of the Southeast Asian American (SEAA) experience, starting with the first wave of refugees who fled Cambodia, Laos, and Viet Nam as a result of American occupation and wars throughout the region. Collectively, this community is the largest community of refugees ever to be resettled in America. Yet despite four decades in this country, Southeast Asian Americans continue to face disparate challenges like other low-income, immigrant, refugee, communities of color — ranging from poverty, to educational inequity, health disparities, and harsh immigration policies. COVID-19 pandemic has also revealed and exacerbated systemic barriers that have …

From The Flatlands Of Oakland To The Ivory Towers Of Higher Education: A Counter-Narrative Of A Southeast Asian Refugee, Van T. Lac
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
This counter-narrative exposes the themes of (dis)placement and (in)visibility that the author has encountered as a Southeast Asian refugee navigating the educational systems in K12 public schools and higher education. The author begins with a snapshot of adolescence growing up in a low-income community in Oakland, California, highlighting her observations as a Southeast Asian refugee youth and the plight of her peers. The latter part of the essay surfaces her experiences existing in higher education contexts where the model minority myth shapes in explicit and veiled ways how she traverses spaces as a Southeast Asian refugee in college, graduate studies, …
Vietnamese American Women Public School Administrators Leading For Social Justice And Equity, Jia Grace Liang
Vietnamese American Women Public School Administrators Leading For Social Justice And Equity, Jia Grace Liang
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
In the field of educational leadership, little is known about Southeast Asian American women, their perspectives and experiences as school leaders. Studies that explore the roles of Southeast Asian American women school administrators in leading for social justice are virtually non-existent. The current study was guided by the paradigm of transnational feminism. This qualitative multi-case study draws on retrospective accounts of two Vietnamese American women school administrators in a Southern state and a Midwestern state to understand the ways in which they navigate intersectional stereotypes in their leadership context to advocate for and create conditions for educational equity for their …
Journeying “Home”: Negotiating Belonging As Vietnamese American Việt Kiều, Mary Yee
Journeying “Home”: Negotiating Belonging As Vietnamese American Việt Kiều, Mary Yee
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
For Southeast Asian young people who left as adolescents from their home countries, their connections to those places are often fraught with ambiguity. As for almost all first-generation immigrant youth, issues of belonging in America have touched multiple aspects of their lives, including issues of identity. Not belonging is the diasporic experience of the immigrant (Christou, 2011; Skrbis, 2008). This qualitative study examined the lived experience of three Vietnamese American young people returning home as Việt Kiều, or diasporic Vietnamese. For these emerging adults, it was an important developmental task to figure out one’s place in the world: one’s belief …

Navigating Refugee Subjecthood: Cambodian American Education, Identity, And Resilience, Yvonne Y. Kwan
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
To investigate trauma formation associated with the intricacy of Cambodian-specific experiences, this study examines how refugee identities and daily diasporic experiences shape the larger subject positions of subsequent generations—particularly through the concept of refugee subjecthood. Cambodian American students’ navigation of ethnic and racial identity reveals that in comparison to the available discursive narratives about their history (given to them through multicultural education), the younger generations’ is an inexact fit. To draw out the relationships between collective feelings and social experiences, this article addresses how Cambodian American students not only come into recognition about their positions as refugee subjects but …

An Empirical Exploration Of Southeast Asian-Americans In Education Research: A Qualitative Meta-Analysis, Peter T. Keo
An Empirical Exploration Of Southeast Asian-Americans In Education Research: A Qualitative Meta-Analysis, Peter T. Keo
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
This research examined how Southeast Asian-Americans are treated in leading K-12 and higher education research. A qualitative meta-analysis was conducted using secondary data sources. I analyzed 1,192 pages of text from 151 peer-reviewed academic articles in six K-12 and higher education journals. In a span of 10 years (2007-2016), only four of the 151 articles (2.6%) reviewed specifically addressed in whole or in part Southeast Asian-Americans – one of the most disadvantaged ethnic minority groups in America. Findings demonstrated that aggregating racial data for Asian-Americans silences under-represented Southeast Asian-Americans, suggesting that the continued fight for racial equality in educational research …
