Characterization Of Maize Near-Isogenic Lines With Enhanced Flavonoid Expression To Be Used As Tools In Diet-Health Complexity, Binning Wu, Haotian Chang, Rich Marini, Surinder Chopra, Lavanya Reddivari

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications

Increasing incidence of chronic diseases in the 21st century has emphasized the importance of developing crops with enhanced nutritional value. Plant-based diets are associated with reduced incidence of many chronic diseases. The growing population and increased food demand have prioritized the development of high-yielding commercial crop varieties at the expense of natural flavors as well as health-benefiting compounds including polyphenols. Flavonoids are a large subfamily of polyphenols abundant in the plant kingdom with known health-promoting effects, making them a promising trait to be re-introduced into elite lines. Given the vast array of flavonoids and the complexity of plant food metabolome …

In Their Own Words: Forgotten Women Pilots Of Early Aviation, Fred Erisman Jan 2021

In Their Own Words: Forgotten Women Pilots Of Early Aviation, Fred Erisman

Purdue Studies in Aeronautics and Astronautics

Amelia Earhart’s prominence in American aviation during the 1930s obscures a crucial point: she was but one of a closely knit community of women pilots. Although the women were well known in the profession and widely publicized in the press at the time, they are largely overlooked today. Like Earhart, they wrote extensively about aviation and women’s causes, producing an absorbing record of the life of women fliers during the emergence and peak of the Golden Age of Aviation (1925–1940). Earhart and her contemporaries, however, were only the most recent in a long line of women pilots whose activities reached …

Evaluation Of Bell Pepper Cultivars With And Without Resistance To Bacterial Leaf Spot And Phytophthora, West Central Minnesota, Nathan Dalman, Steve Poppe Jan 2021

Evaluation Of Bell Pepper Cultivars With And Without Resistance To Bacterial Leaf Spot And Phytophthora, West Central Minnesota, Nathan Dalman, Steve Poppe

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

Bacterial leaf spot (BLS) and Phytophthora (PHY) diseases are a common problem for Minnesota bell pepper producers and if not detected and treated early enough, these diseases can kill the plants. There are cultivars that have resistance to these particular diseases but these cultivars must maintain yields similar to traditional cultivars in order to be desired by producers and buyers. Our goal was to determine any differences in performance between cultivars with and without resistance. Yield, fruit size and number of fruit per plant were the evaluated characteristics.

Prevalence Of Common Mental Health Concerns And Service Utilization Among International Students Studying In The U.S., Xiang Zhou, Anne Q. Zhou, Xiaoning Sun

Department of Educational Studies Faculty Publications

An estimated one million international students are enrolled in U.S. universities. However, little

was known about the landscape of their mental health and help-seeking behaviors. Drawing from a large national university student sample (N = 228,421, 8.49% non-U.S. citizen) from the Healthy Minds Study, data indicated the rates of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, eating disorder, non-suicidal self-injury, and suicidal ideation were 27.4%, 20.0%, 26.4%, 17.2%, and 8.8% respectively among international students, with high inter-country variabilities. Contrary to our expectations, there is no strong and consistent evidence suggesting international students were at higher risk for common mental health concerns …

Structural Disruption Of The Blood–Brain Barrier In Repetitive Primary Blast Injury, Gozde Uzunalli, Seth Herr, Alexandra M. Dieterly, Riyi Shi, L. Tiffany Lyle Jan 2021

Structural Disruption Of The Blood–Brain Barrier In Repetitive Primary Blast Injury, Gozde Uzunalli, Seth Herr, Alexandra M. Dieterly, Riyi Shi, L. Tiffany Lyle

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Background

Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a growing health concern due to the increased use of low-cost improvised explosive devices in modern warfare. Mild blast exposures are common amongst military personnel; however, these women and men typically do not have adequate recovery time from their injuries due to the transient nature of behavioral symptoms. bTBI has been linked to heterogeneous neuropathology, including brain edema, neuronal degeneration and cognitive abnormalities depending on the intensity of blast overpressure and frequency. Recent studies have reported heterogeneity in blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability following blast injury. There still remains a limited understanding of the …

Atmospheric Pressure Calibration To Improve Accuracy Of Transponder-Based Aircraft Operations Counting Technology, John H. Mott, Chuyang Yang, Darcy M. Bullock

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

In the United States, over 2,400 of the 2,941 non-primary National Plan of Integrated Airport System airports have limited means of establishing operations counts due to lack of available personnel. Precise counts of airport operations are helpful for allocating airport improvement funds, as well as for local and system planning. An emerging technology utilizing ADS-B position data to calibrate signal strength received from Mode C transponders, thereby capturing location information from over 90% of the aircraft operating in the National Airspace System, has successfully estimated operations counts at these non-towered airports with reasonable levels of accuracy. This paper evaluates the …

Tooling Design Modeling For Composite Fuselage Of Beechcraft King Air 250 Using Catia, Miazor Fidelis Ekom

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Aircraft’s constant operation in tough conditions necessitates the need for structural components of high strength yet low weight. Composite materials are being used as an alternative to conventional aluminum alloys because of their competitive strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios. In this paper, the detailed design procedure of a light-aircraft composite material fuselage tooling in three dimensions is shown. In its operation, the layup tools provide a surface for the composite part which is the correct shape of the part and is stable through the cure cycle, and also providing a means of indexing the part for the next manufacturing operation. This …

Chile Pepper Variety Evaluation At Four Sites Across Minnesota And Wisconsin, 2020, Charlie Rohwer, Natalie Hoidal, Cala Farm, Agua Gorda Farm Cooperative, Jarl's Produce

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

Latinx fresh market vegetable farmers in Minnesota face numerous barriers to market access. Many Latinx farmers live in rural communities where farmers market sales are low, and opportunities for wholesale are limited. The growers who make up Shared Ground Farmers’ Cooperative have developed an innovative cooperative marketing system to aggregate produce and sell it in Twin Cities markets, but many of the individual farmers involved also wish to find ways to keep the produce they grow in their own communities. This project emerged through a series of discussions about finding niche markets for culturally relevant crops in small-town Mexican restaurants …

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

In the United States, municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills remain a potential mining source of recoverable materials, including but not limited to critical, precious, and rare earth metals found in electronic waste. This is possible due to collectible leachate that filters through MSW landfills, carrying metals, nutrients of value, and microbes—some of which may hold key metal bioleaching properties—within. The purpose of this study is to begin analyzing leachate from MSW landfills in the American Midwest to understand the composition of microbial communities within these landfills. Landfill leachate samples sourced in northern Indiana, representing the landfill process during unique times …

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

While PTSD service dogs are specifically trained to interact with their veterans, emerging evidence suggests that service dogs may also have an impact on other members of veteran households. To our knowledge, only one study quantifies these effects focused on veteran spouses (McCall et al., 2020). Our study aimed to quantitatively measure the impact of PTSD service dogs on military family wellbeing. Data was collected from survey responses of 88 veteran spouses who rated their experiences on standardized outcome measures. Each spouse answered the surveys at two time points: (1) baseline, and (2) three months post-baseline (follow-up). Spouses in the …

Experimental And Design Effort To Understand A Wider Sense Of Memory Application, Nicholas Zogbi Jan 2021

Experimental And Design Effort To Understand A Wider Sense Of Memory Application, Nicholas Zogbi

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

Magnetic Random-Access Memory (mRAM) is a more efficient, smaller, and less power-hungry memory device that can be implemented into computers. Using Magnetic Tunnel Junctions (MTJ) we store memory in devices that are far less complex than other types of memory with just the use of currents and magnetic fields changing the data.

In collaboration with the System-on-Chip Extension Technologies (SoCET) and Computing Advances by Probabilistic Spin Logic (CAPSL) groups, we have been working on using the characteristics of MTJs to characterize available commercial mRAM devices so we can have a better understanding of the thresholds of the MTJs. The SoCET …

Effects Of Facility Dogs On Emotional Wellbeing Of Pediatric Hospital Personnel, Abhinav Ramesh Jan 2021

Effects Of Facility Dogs On Emotional Wellbeing Of Pediatric Hospital Personnel, Abhinav Ramesh

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

Healthcare is one of the most demanding professions, and approximately 45% of physicians experience job-related burnout (Dyrbye et al., 2018). While previous research has shown that working with facility dogs in hospitals may improve job satisfaction (Jensen et al., 2021), little research has been done on specific observed factors related to emotional wellbeing. The purpose of this study was to examine effects of working with facility dogs on emotions using ecological momentary assessment (EMA). One advantage of EMA over traditional assessments is the elimination of temporal bias, by asking participants about their current state rather than asking them to recollect …

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

Flagging graphics interchangeable formats (GIFs) on personal devices are essential to protect users with epilepsy or chronic migraine. The research broke GIFs into frames and compared consecutive frames in pairs with three conditions: the ratio of average intensity, percentage of dangerous pixels, and hertz value. First, the average intensity of each frame is calculated using the formula: 0.299 * red + 0.587 * green + 0.114 * blue (Sedgewick & Wayne, 2017), for each pixel in the frame. Next, to obtain the percentage of dangerous pixels, each pixel of the same location from the two frames is compared. The absolute …
