Mapping Of The Information Flow Of The Valle Occidental Coffee Region: A System-Of-Systems Perspective, Irene Campos Feb 2021

Mapping Of The Information Flow Of The Valle Occidental Coffee Region: A System-Of-Systems Perspective, Irene Campos

CESUN Conference

Uncertainty is a characteristic of many of the contemporary environments that our systems inhabit. In the case of farming systems, uncertainty has always been present in the form of unpredictable weather conditions, disease outbreaks and evolving societal and economic factors. Uncertainty poses a challenge for communication and information alignment, which is especially important for a farming system responding to disasters. A first step towards finding solutions for problems of information alignment in systems is mapping and identifying information links in them. The goal of this research is to map the information flow and feedback dynamics of the Valle Occidental coffee …

Risk Management Decision Making For Security And Trust In Hardware Supply Chains, Zachary A. Collier, Thomas L. Polmateer, James H. Lambert Feb 2021

Risk Management Decision Making For Security And Trust In Hardware Supply Chains, Zachary A. Collier, Thomas L. Polmateer, James H. Lambert

CESUN Conference

Modern cyber-physical systems are enabled by electronic hardware and embedded systems. The security of these sub-components is a concern during the design and operational phases of cyber-physical system life cycles. Compromised electronics can result in mission-critical failures, unauthorized access, and other severe consequences. As systems become more complex and feature greater connectivity, system owners must make decisions regarding how to mitigate risks and ensure resilience and trust. This paper provides an overview of research efforts related to assessing and managing risks, resilience, and trust with an emphasis on electronic hardware and embedded systems. The research takes a decision-oriented perspective, drawing …

Model-Based Fault Analysis Of Communication Between Supervisors And Their Subordinates In The Japanese Workplace, Misako Yoshinari, Hidekazu Nishimura, Tetsuya Toma Feb 2021

Model-Based Fault Analysis Of Communication Between Supervisors And Their Subordinates In The Japanese Workplace, Misako Yoshinari, Hidekazu Nishimura, Tetsuya Toma

CESUN Conference

This paper uses model-based fault analysis to identify the functions and factors that may cause miscommunication between supervisors and their subordinates. In describing the system model, a system-engineering approach is used to clearly define behaviors and interactions between supervisors and subordinates in the Japanese workplace. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to extract system requirements, and the functional architecture is described. The system model was verified by interviewing business persons. Using the system model, we identify the major functions and factors disrupting communication.

Cost Analysis Of Evtol Configuration Design For An Air Ambulances System In Japan, Yusuke Mihara, Payuhavorakulchai Pawnlada, Aki Nakamoto, Tsubasa Nakamura, Masaru Nakano Feb 2021

Cost Analysis Of Evtol Configuration Design For An Air Ambulances System In Japan, Yusuke Mihara, Payuhavorakulchai Pawnlada, Aki Nakamoto, Tsubasa Nakamura, Masaru Nakano

CESUN Conference

Electric-vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) aircraft, known as urban air mobility or flying cars, are being considered for widespread use as air taxis, emergency medical transportation, sightseeing vehicles, and rural transportation, owing to their reduced-size, low-cost, and low-noise characteristics. In this study, we conduct an interview at a Japanese hospital that currently uses a helicopter for medical emergencies to output the mission profile. Due to current battery-technology limitations, the new air ambulance, which will deliver a doctor to a patient, is conceived as having 2 passengers, including the pilot. Two eVTOL configurations are studied: a fixed-wing craft and a multi-rotor. The purpose of …

The Challenges And Opportunities Of Teaching Systems Engineering For Large Scale Engineering Systemse, Edward Pines, Dennis Engi Feb 2021

The Challenges And Opportunities Of Teaching Systems Engineering For Large Scale Engineering Systemse, Edward Pines, Dennis Engi

CESUN Conference

In this paper, we discuss a course in large scale systems engineering that was developed as part of a twelve-credit Graduate Certificate in Systems Engineering for part-time and returning students. Our focus was on how to work on big, unmanageable, messy problems. Teaching systems engineering for large-scale engineering systems is challenging for many reasons. One of the main challenges is the breadth of material to be addressed within one or two courses. Other challenges result from how students learn about the transitions from the development of a conceptual framework to systems architecture through engineering design, mathematical analysis and eventual construction …

Propose Of Architecture Design For Early Warning System With Space And Terrestrial Infrastructure, Akihiko Nishino Feb 2021

Propose Of Architecture Design For Early Warning System With Space And Terrestrial Infrastructure, Akihiko Nishino

CESUN Conference

The purpose of this research is to design an architecture of early warning system with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and terrestrial infrastructure for improving a coverage of disaster information dissemination. In the proposed architecture, segments and information flow are identified in order to introduce an early warning system to target areas where there are no such kinds of public alert distribution. It can be adapted worldwide by combining GNSS satellite and terrestrial infrastructure. At the beginning of disaster, information will be sent from the agency via GNSS to terrestrial infrastructure, widely used such as a siren and a public …

Annual Impact Report 2020: A Report By The Impact Evaluation Team, Impact Management Team, Impact Evaluation Team

IMPACT Reports

This is the 2020 annual report of Instruction Matters: Purdue Academic Course Transformation (IMPACT). IMPACT was created in 2010, and is a large collaborative initiative on the Purdue West Lafayette campus involving multiple key partners across campus including the Office of the Provost, Center for Instructional Excellence (CIE), Purdue Online (PO), Purdue Libraries and School of Information Studies (PULSIS), the Evaluation and Learning Research Center (ELRC), and Institutional Data Analytics and Assessment (IDA+A). IMPACT works with instructors to redesign large enrollment, foundational courses with the aim of engaging students more fully in their learning and creating a more student-centered environment, …

Improving Writing Quality Of Capstone Reports, Fred Berry, Margaret Phillips, James Condron, Phillip Sanger Feb 2021

Improving Writing Quality Of Capstone Reports, Fred Berry, Margaret Phillips, James Condron, Phillip Sanger

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Abstract-Contributions: The main contribution is to share a series of practical methods that improve the writing quality of capstone reports. Background: The ability to write well is critical to the success of an engineering technology graduate. However, the evidence points to the fact that industries are disappointed with the quality of writing skills graduates demonstrate. Intended Outcomes: A faculty review of capstone reports showed little improvement in writing quality from the first course to the second in a two-semester capstone sequence. Therefore, the instructors explored what actions were needed to improve the writing quality of the capstone reports. Application Design: …
