Airplane Pitch Response To Rapid Configuration Change: Flight Test And Safety Assessment, Ralph Kimberlin, Markus Wilde, Brian Kish, Isaac Silver Apr 2021

Airplane Pitch Response To Rapid Configuration Change: Flight Test And Safety Assessment, Ralph Kimberlin, Markus Wilde, Brian Kish, Isaac Silver

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

This paper examines airplane response to rapid flap extension on seven general aviation airplanes. The scenario involves a pilot flying in the traffic pattern becoming distracted, abruptly extending flaps while looking outside the airplane, and failing to notice airspeed and pitch-attitude changes. The airplanes tested reached pitch forces of up to 36 lbf, meeting FAA requirements but exceeding the capability of 55% of the population. Flight data showed a pitch-up to more than 30˚ in 5 s after flap extension, causing airspeed to drop below stall speed for four of the airplanes. At traffic pattern altitudes, stalling an airplane can …

Conversations About Wellness: A Qualitative Analysis Of Patient Narratives Post Annual Wellness Visit, Vicki Simpson, Nancy Edwards, Melissa Kovich Apr 2021

Conversations About Wellness: A Qualitative Analysis Of Patient Narratives Post Annual Wellness Visit, Vicki Simpson, Nancy Edwards, Melissa Kovich

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Support for successful aging in place requires an understanding of the factors that impede or support health promotion behaviors. Nurse-led monthly follow-up calls between annual wellness visits (AWV) offer the opportunity to both provide support and collect data which can inform development of effective health promotion strategies. The aim of this research was to provide ongoing support for health promotion efforts and explore factors playing a role in meeting AWV recommendations. A total of 144 visit summaries for 47 Medicare beneficiaries (65+) who had completed an AWV within the last year were analyzed using a thematic approach. Themes were organized …

Provincializing New York: In And Out Of The Geopolitics Of Art After 1945, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel Apr 2021

Provincializing New York: In And Out Of The Geopolitics Of Art After 1945, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel

Artl@s Bulletin

In this article, I argue that the putative global centrality of New York in art after 1945 is a construct, as it is for Paris prior to 1945. Monographs and national approaches are unsuccessful in challenging such powerful myths as these. A global, transnational and comparative approach demonstrates that the struggle for centrality was a global phenomenon after 1945, a battle that New York does not win (depending on one’s point of view) until after 1964. Rather than considering centres and peripheries as a fixed category, I propose to consider them as a strategic notion which artists and their promoters …

Circulation Of Images, From Recognition To Erasure: An Artist’S Response, Lei Xie Apr 2021

Circulation Of Images, From Recognition To Erasure: An Artist’S Response, Lei Xie

Artl@s Bulletin

This article revolves around my practice, as an artist, which has an essential link with images and their circulation. In a subtle way, painting offers me a language allowing me to explore the polysemy of the chosen image, to experience a vocabulary both figurative and abstract. My practice could choose and process "ordinary" images, which are diffused but whose diffusion does not alter the subject, and has no consequence on the latter. It can also retain images whose strength is intrinsic to their circulation, to their popularization, to their controversy, images which will however ultimately generate paintings, and simultaneously erasing …

Un Mode D’Existence Équivoque Ce Que Touching Reality De Thomas Hirschhorn Dit De La Circulation Des Images., Pascale Borrel Apr 2021

Un Mode D’Existence Équivoque Ce Que Touching Reality De Thomas Hirschhorn Dit De La Circulation Des Images., Pascale Borrel

Artl@s Bulletin

Notes On The Circulation Of Epistemic Images, Nina Samuel Apr 2021

Notes On The Circulation Of Epistemic Images, Nina Samuel

Artl@s Bulletin

Three cases of image circulation in the sciences, two from complex dynamics and one from microscopy, are discussed. The article deals with failed circulations, suspected errors, interdisciplinary communication, notebooks of scientists, the role of media shifts, mathematics and materiality, human perception, pictorial norms and conventions. It analyses how images circulate through different thought collectives and visual cultures. All three examples show different strategies of how images that break with visual traditions have been reintegrated into epistemic circulations and become “boundary objects” that are both robust and flexible.

Circularity And Visibility In Italian Art Periodicals (1968-1978), Denis Viva Apr 2021

Circularity And Visibility In Italian Art Periodicals (1968-1978), Denis Viva

Artl@s Bulletin

During the 1970s, at the apex of “dematerialized art”, the art magazines contributed a great deal to turn visibility (the photographic circulation of artworks, news on the artists, etc.) into an economic value. In a country like Italy, where museum validation was still lacking, neo-avantgarde periodicals such as Flash Art or Data introduced new communicative strategies (community building, indirect advertising, etc.) in order to provide a trans-national audience for Italian art. This study tries to enlighten the impact of advertising on art magazines’ preferences and their criteria of newsworthiness by analyzing some of their quantitative data.

To Let See. The Shocking Picture As A Social Mobilization Weapon, Beatriz Martínez Sosa Apr 2021

To Let See. The Shocking Picture As A Social Mobilization Weapon, Beatriz Martínez Sosa

Artl@s Bulletin

This paper analyses the role that Emmett Till’s postmortem pictures had in the emergence of the modern civil rights movement. When they circulated in magazines, newspapers, and television in 1955, African Americans mobilized all over the U.S., so the pictures worked as a mobilization weapon. I intend to develop some hypotheses to explain this effect. To this end, the paper comprises four parts: an outline of the murder case; an analysis of the pictures’ formal and semantic features as well as the discourses and context where they were released; an examination of Till’s figure as a martyr through the effects …

How To Build A World Art: The Strategic Universalism Of Colour Reproductions And The Unesco Prize (1953-1968), Chiara Vitali Apr 2021

How To Build A World Art: The Strategic Universalism Of Colour Reproductions And The Unesco Prize (1953-1968), Chiara Vitali

Artl@s Bulletin

What role did UNESCO play in the art world of the post-war era? This article makes use of published and archival sources in order to clarify the utopia of a “World Art” that shaped UNESCO and led to the “Archives of Colour Reproductions of Works of Art”, a project of worldwide collect and diffusion of images of “masterworks” inspired by Malraux’s “Museum without walls”. This case study focuses on one particular aspect of the project, the “UNESCO Prize”, conceived by the Brazilian art critic and Marxist intellectual Mario Pedrosa for the 1953 São Paulo Biennial.

The Copy & The Real Thing: Changing Perceptions Between The Rubens Centennials In 1877 And 1977, Griet Bonne Apr 2021

The Copy & The Real Thing: Changing Perceptions Between The Rubens Centennials In 1877 And 1977, Griet Bonne

Artl@s Bulletin

In this paper I examine the changing relationship between mechanical reproductions and the original artwork in the context of the Rubens centennials in 1877 and 1977. Drawing on theorists such as Walter Benjamin, Dean MacCannell, Hans Belting and Boris Groys, I argue that the mechanism of copying generates a double logic of image perception: a simultaneous centrifugal and centripetal circulation of images that affects how people perceive art in modern society. I explore this perception dynamic by looking at two photo-exhibitions during the Rubens centennials.

Extensive And Intensive Iconography. Goethe’S Faust Outlined, Evanghelia Stead Apr 2021

Extensive And Intensive Iconography. Goethe’S Faust Outlined, Evanghelia Stead

Artl@s Bulletin

Drawing on a corpus of printed items between countries, compared first-hand, the article examines the mark left by Moritz Retzsch’s 26 outline etchings after Goethe’s Faust (1816) using the distinction between extensive and intensive iconography. In extensive iconography, copied or imitated images build a collective imagination, devaluing the original work, albeit contributing to the play’s aura. That view challenges Walter Benjamin’s influential essay on “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” (1935). In intensive iconography, inventive artists, inspired by Retzsch, rework images, granting a particular scene genuine reinterpretation. How then should we value multiples, copies and genuine …

Travelling Images In The Global Context: A Case Study Of The Short-Lived 18th Century Akita Ranga Painting School In Japan, Kuniko Abe Apr 2021

Travelling Images In The Global Context: A Case Study Of The Short-Lived 18th Century Akita Ranga Painting School In Japan, Kuniko Abe

Artl@s Bulletin

By exploring early available travelling Western illustrations, image sources for the Akita Ranga painters in eighteenth century Japan, this article attempts to show how they developed, merging Japanese traditional Kano school aesthetics, new realistic Chinese trends for still-life images, and Western type illusionism, using Japanese traditional pictorial materials. The Akita Ranga school’s inventive compositional framework is the consequence of interaction with European models traced back to the famous Vesalius anatomy images with landscape, finally reaching Europe via Ukiyo-e prints, forming a full circle of the migration of images.

Sub Signo Capricorni. The Image Of Capricorn In Glyptics: Literary Sources, Gemstones, Impressions, Drawings, Alessandra Magni, Umberto Verdura, Gabriella Tassinari Apr 2021

Sub Signo Capricorni. The Image Of Capricorn In Glyptics: Literary Sources, Gemstones, Impressions, Drawings, Alessandra Magni, Umberto Verdura, Gabriella Tassinari

Artl@s Bulletin

The relationship between glyptics and the circulation of images can be analysed from different perspectives, as seen in the case study of the image of Capricorn. The goat-fish monster entered the European collective imagination during Antiquity, when its image was spread on gems and coins. The popularity of this theme in the Augustan Age is unquestionable but, over time, the political meanings associated with Capricorn seemed to have faded, while others appeared. These meanings were fully recovered by 17th century scholars through the analysis of famous cameos and lesser-known gems. However, the protective and magical value of gems with …

Behind The Circulations Of Images, Léa Saint-Raymond Apr 2021

Behind The Circulations Of Images, Léa Saint-Raymond

Artl@s Bulletin

The history of images is nothing but a history of their mediums and a history of physical bodies. And hence, it is a history of circulation. As an introduction of this volume, this paper seeks to go "behind the circulations of images" by combining the fields of cultural, political and geopolitical studies, and by bringing together different methodologies from monographic and formal analysis to digital approaches (quantitative, cartographic, visual). These diversified case studies make it possible to answer three major questions: 1) How do images circulate? 2) Why do images circulate? 3) What does circulation do to an image and, …

Poro-Elastic Materials And The Control Of Low Frequency Sound, J Stuart Bolton Apr 2021

Poro-Elastic Materials And The Control Of Low Frequency Sound, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

In the introductory sections of active noise control and metamaterial articles, it is often said that “conventional”, i.e., poro-elastic materials such as foams and fibrous media, do not work well at low frequencies. While that observation may be true for the simplest treatments, e.g., a single layer of a homogeneous, limp fibrous layer, there are many cases in which excellent weight and cost-effective acoustical treatments can be realized by using poro-elastic media. The first example involves the serendipitous discovery of a configuration that allows a 25 mm thick foam layer to provide effective absorption at 300 Hz, at a surface …

Professional Certification Exam: An Alternative Method For A Remote Additive Manufacturing Lab, Rustin Webster Apr 2021

Professional Certification Exam: An Alternative Method For A Remote Additive Manufacturing Lab, Rustin Webster

School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

A free professional certification exam was adopted in an introductory course on the study of polymers and composites after the course was transitioned to remote education due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic. The Certified SOLIDWORKS Associates – Additive Manufacturing (CSWA-AM) exam and the prerequisite 10-part online video learning path replaced traditional hands-on laboratory activities. Twenty-five engineering technology (ET) students attempted the exam and passed at a rate of 76% (n = 19). The perceived positive student acceptance to and the effectiveness of the remote lab activities to meet learning outcomes is encouraging the instructor to not only continue using the …

From Ideal Workers To Ideal Work For All: A 50-Year Review Integrating Careers And Work-Family Research With A Future Research Agenda, Ellen Ernst Kossek, Matthew Perrigino, Alyson Gounden Rock Apr 2021

From Ideal Workers To Ideal Work For All: A 50-Year Review Integrating Careers And Work-Family Research With A Future Research Agenda, Ellen Ernst Kossek, Matthew Perrigino, Alyson Gounden Rock

Department of Management Faculty Publications

Historically, the careers literature, (grounded in vocational psychology) and the work-family literature, rooted in industrial-organizational psychology and organizational behavior (IO/OB), were not well-integrated, developed at separate speeds, and differed in gender focus. Early career studies targeted men's careers, while work-family studies centered on women's careers. Both literatures assumed conformity to an Ideal Worker norm. Looking over fifty years, the goal of our paper is to conduct a review in order to identify commonalities and gaps, and suggest integrative lenses for future research. The 71 studies we identified that addressed both work-family and careers issues clustered into three main approaches: careers …

A Poro-Elastic Model For Activated Carbon Stacks, Zhuang Mo, Tongyang Shi, Seungkyu Lee, Yongbeom Seo, J. Stuart Bolton Apr 2021

A Poro-Elastic Model For Activated Carbon Stacks, Zhuang Mo, Tongyang Shi, Seungkyu Lee, Yongbeom Seo, J. Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Porous materials are widely applied in the field of noise control owing to their ability to attenuate transmission and/or reflection of sound. Among these materials, activated carbon is of increasing interest due to its excellent absorption performance at low frequencies. In 2016, a rigid, triple porosity model for granular activated carbon (GAC) was proposed by Venegas and Umnova. In the proposed model, a sorption process was introduced to account for the effect of the smallest scale pores, which is correlated with the high absorption at low frequencies. To extend that model to account for the finite frame stiffness of the …

Acoustical Investigation Of Aerogel Granules Modeled As A Layer Of Poroelastic Material, Yutong Xue, Amrutha Dasyam, J Stuart Bolton, Bhisham Sharma Apr 2021

Acoustical Investigation Of Aerogel Granules Modeled As A Layer Of Poroelastic Material, Yutong Xue, Amrutha Dasyam, J Stuart Bolton, Bhisham Sharma

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Aerogels are defined as mesoporous materials obtained by replacing the liquid phase within a gel by a gaseous phase, typically air. This underlying mesoporous structure provides aerogels unique macrostructural properties such as ultralow density, high transparency, and low thermal conductivity. Given their ultralow density, aerogels are also an attractive, lightweight solution for noise control applications. Recent studies have shown that the acoustical properties of granular aerogels are very different from those observed for other granular media. In this presentation, we present results from our recent investigation of the acoustical behavior of Enova IC3100 aerogel granules. Manufactured and commercially sold by …

Information-Seeking On Coronavirus Disease 2019: Communication Factors Influencing Behavioral Intention, Seok Kang, Sophia Dave, Hyungjoon Kim

KAUPA Letters

This study examined how internal (uncertainty, susceptibility, severity, anxiety, and fear) and external motivators (descriptive norms, parasocial interaction, and identification) account for information seeking, message reception, and behavioral intentions to cope with COVID-19. A total of 500 U.S. adults’ responses were collected and analyzed. Results found that external motivators were significantly related to message reception whereas internal motivators were not. The finding that information seeking did not predict message reception implicates that both implicit and explicit confirmation processes are necessary to turn into behavioral intentions to cope with COVID-19.

Arteletra: The Sixties In Latin America And The Politics Of Going Unnoticed, Jason A. Bartles Apr 2021

Arteletra: The Sixties In Latin America And The Politics Of Going Unnoticed, Jason A. Bartles

Purdue University Press Book Previews

ArteletrA analyzes the Sixties in Latin America in order to revisit the core claim of literary and cultural studies to political relevancy in the contemporary world: the task of making visible the invisible. Though visibility can secure rights for the disenfranchised, it also risks subjecting them to the biopolitical and capitalist arrangements of space. What is at stake in this book is a series of aesthetic and ethical tools for engaging in politics—defined here as the potential to disagree—without first passing through visibility. These tools cohere around a practice Bartles calls “the politics of going unnoticed,” which he derives from …

Family Depression Profiles Among Adolescents And Their Parents: A Group-Based Multi-Trajectory Modeling, Xiang Zhou, Xiaoning Sun Apr 2021

Family Depression Profiles Among Adolescents And Their Parents: A Group-Based Multi-Trajectory Modeling, Xiang Zhou, Xiaoning Sun

Department of Educational Studies Faculty Publications

Early onset of depression predicts unfavorable psychosocial and health outcomes, and depression often co-occurs for children and their parents, yet family profiles of depression trajectories are not fully examined. This population-based longitudinal prospective cohort study included 2,111 families drawn from the Chinese Family Panel Study (CFPS) with biannual assessments from 2010 to 2018. Group-based multi-trajectory modeling was used to identify depression trajectories of children, fathers, and mothers. Six distinct profiles of depression symptoms were identified. Based upon multi-trajectory findings of family depression profiles, when adolescents are at risk for depression, there is likely at least one parent concurrently at risk …

Why Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Rupture: Predicting Pressure And Diameter At Failure, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

Objective: To perform a first-principles biomechanical analysis of the process of aortic aneurysm rupture, based upon the balance of expanding forces from blood pressure and reactive forces from wall elasticity, and to explore new methods for prediction of rupture risk. Methods: A mathematical model is created to describe the forces acting on a localized, weak patch of aneurysm wall during the cardiac cycle. A method to obtain patient-specific model parameters non-invasively, including incremental Young’s modulus, from cine ultrasonic or magnetic resonance images is proposed. Results: Pre-rupture integrity of an aneurysm is maintained by the balance between the expanding forces and …

Applying Social Science To Bring Resident Stakeholders Into Pollution Governance: A Rural Environmental Justice Public Health Case Study, Sherrie M. Steiner, Jordan M. Marshall, Atefeh Mohammadpour, Aaron W. Thompson

Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications

The purpose of this engaged public sociology study was to use social science to bring resident stakeholders into the process of governing pollution production in a rural community. The community has cancer clusters. Residents have concerns about direct exposure to pollution production in their neighborhood by a steel recycling plant that has been cited numerous times for environmental violations. The facility has been under voluntary remediation since 2009, but neighborhood residents were marginalized from the governance process. This case study details how social science was used to bring neighborhood residents’ concerns about direct exposure to toxic air pollution into remediation …
