International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

One of the main objectives of the European Commission in the buildings sector, responsible for approximately 40% of total energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions, is to identify technological solutions capable of reducing energy consumption and at the same time greenhouse gas emissions. For this purpose, ground source heat pump system (GSHPs) is a technology of particular interest that promises to considerably reduce greenhouse gas emissions of HVAC systems (up to 44% compared to air source heat pumps). In order to develop and test innovative GSHPs to be used for heating and cooling in the various European climatic …

Refrigerant Concentration Mapping Using Real-Time Gas Monitoring; Phase I- Data Collection System Verification, Jethro Medina, Mary Koban May 2021

Refrigerant Concentration Mapping Using Real-Time Gas Monitoring; Phase I- Data Collection System Verification, Jethro Medina, Mary Koban

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

Environmental regulations are increasingly restricting the use of traditional high global warming potential (GWP) fluorinated refrigerants (1). Hydrofluorocarbons or HFCs are fluorinated refrigerants with zero ozone depletion potential (ODP). They are typified by having good shelf and use stability, material compatibility, adequate capacity and generally good performance across a range of operating conditions all while being non-flammable. However, due to the high GWP (>1000-5000), they are losing favor in the marketplace. Many international equipment standards (IEC 60335-2-24, IEC 60335-2-40, IEC 60335-2-89, etc.) and installation standards (ISO 5149) are being revised to further enable use of lower GWP, 0 ODP …

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

The use of industrial high-temperature heat pumps (HTHP) is particularly interesting for heat recovery applications and various industrial processes such as steam generation, drying, sterilization, paper production, or food preparation. The application of new synthetic hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) and hydrochlorofluoroolefin (HCFO) refrigerants with low environmental impact is becoming increasingly important in future HTHP. At our university in Switzerland, a laboratory-scale HTHP has been developed as part of the SCCER-EIP project (Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research – Efficiency of Industrial Processes). The developed heat pump is single-stage, operates with a variable speed piston compressor, and contains a continuously adjustable internal heat …

Service Quality And Passenger Satisfaction In Air Transportation In A Developing Economy: Evidence From Nigeria, Obioma R. Nwaogbe, Innocent C. Ogwude, Ejem E. A, A Pius

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

This study investigates the quality of service provided for air travel in Nigeria and the level of satisfaction of passengers with the service encountered. It does so by focusing on both the airports and the airlines as service providers. In that way, the study captures much of the effects of the organizational culture, employee behavior, and general norms which influence passenger attitudes. The SERVQUAL model was used in measuring the five dimensions of service. Domestic travel only was studied, with data obtained from well-structured questionnaires to evaluate perception–expectation gaps in airports as well as in airlines. The overall gap score …

In Vivo Tissue-Specific Chromatin Profiling In Drosophila Melanogaster Using Gfp-Tagged Nuclei, Juan Jauregui-Lozano, Kimaya Bakhle, Vikki M. Weake

Department of Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The chromatin landscape defines cellular identity in multicellular organisms with unique patterns of DNA accessibility and histone marks decorating the genome of each cell type. Thus, profiling the chromatin state of different cell types in an intact organism under disease or physiological conditions can provide insight into how chromatin regulates cell homeostasis in vivo. To overcome the many challenges associated with characterizing chromatin state in specific cell types, we developed an improved approach to isolate Drosophila melanogaster nuclei tagged with a GFPKASH protein. The perinuclear space-localized KASH domain anchors GFP to the outer nuclear membrane, and expression of UAS-GFPKASH can …

Refuge Must Be Given: Eleanor Roosevelt, The Jewish Plight, And The Founding Of Israel, John F. Sears May 2021

Refuge Must Be Given: Eleanor Roosevelt, The Jewish Plight, And The Founding Of Israel, John F. Sears

Purdue University Press Books

Refuge Must Be Given details the evolution of Eleanor Roosevelt from someone who harbored negative impressions of Jews to become a leading Gentile champion of Israel in the United States. The book explores, for the first time, Roosevelt’s partnership with the Quaker leader Clarence Pickett in seeking to admit more refugees into the United States, and her relationship with Undersecretary of State Sumner Welles, who was sympathetic to the victims of Nazi persecution yet defended a visa process that failed both Jewish and non-Jewish refugees.

After the war, as a member of the American delegation to the United Nations, Eleanor …

Time Decay: Assets, Authoritarianism, And Anxiety About The Future, Jack Davies May 2021

Time Decay: Assets, Authoritarianism, And Anxiety About The Future, Jack Davies

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This article identifies a basic formula in the Freudo-Marxist take on twentieth-century authoritarianism. This is the incommensurability of inherited past development with the pace and demands of industrial social life, damming up a tremendous excess that seeks reactionary outlet. Authoritarianism, here, breeds in the contradiction between the symptoms of the Oedipal drama and the commodity form. The implicit “repressive hypothesis” for sexuality and developmentalist teleology make this theorization of authoritarian formations untenable today. This article, however, identifies moments of promise in this literature, and turns to materials available to these thinkers—specifically interwar psychoanalytic theory on anxiety and economic theory on …

Defending “Western” Values: Reactionary Neoliberalism In The Americas, Gabriela Segura-Ballar May 2021

Defending “Western” Values: Reactionary Neoliberalism In The Americas, Gabriela Segura-Ballar

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Right-wing populism and authoritarianism are on the rise globally after the financial crisis of 2008. This reactionary trend has widely channeled anxieties created by neoliberal insecurities into cultural and nationalistic backlash against the ostensible enemies of “Western” values (e.g., immigrants, racial and sexual minorities, feminists, and leftists). President Jair Bolsonaro’s “Brazil above everything, God above everyone” and President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” are the most conspicuous examples of the resurgence of a populist reactionary right in the Americas. This continental trend promotes ultra-nationalism and more coercive neoliberalization processes combined with a reactionary authoritarianism that celebrates essentialized “Western” values, …

Incipient Fascism: Black Radical Perspectives, Alberto Toscano May 2021

Incipient Fascism: Black Radical Perspectives, Alberto Toscano

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

The sordid twilight of the Trump presidency raised the stakes of the debate on fascism. While much of the discussion has been magnetised by the legitimacy of analogies with the 1930s, this article argues that a rich and complex tradition of Black radical critique of right-wing authoritarianism provides a vital resource for thinking through the problem of US fascism beyond analogy – beginning with the DuBoisian insight that a racial fascism forged by chattel slavery and settler-colonialism anticipated the ascendancy of European fascisms. The article homes in on Black radical theories of fascism developed in the wake of the movements …

Neo-Authoritarianism And The Contestation Of White Identification In The Us, Justin Gilmore May 2021

Neo-Authoritarianism And The Contestation Of White Identification In The Us, Justin Gilmore

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Justin Gilmore’s article "Neo-Authoritarianism and the Contestation of White Identification in the US" examines how the political forces around Donald Trump are often interpreted as an external attack on American democracy, and how the dynamism of these attacks is thought to emanate from various sites of white chauvinism. This article argues that such an interpretation is partial. The upsurge associated with “Trumpism” represents a distinctive contestation of an alternative type of white identity, one that has been elemental for a progressive form of neoliberalism. Although the neoliberal construction of white identification is distinctive, and indeed kinder, its material basis rests …

Neo-Authoritarianism Without Authority, Massimiliano Tomba May 2021

Neo-Authoritarianism Without Authority, Massimiliano Tomba

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This article examines two aspects of neo-authoritarianism. The first is mainly diagnostic and concerns the nature of authoritarianism as a phenomenon of transition. The article investigates tensions and conflicts between temporalities. It pays attention to the asynchronous nature of change which, alongside the social structural level of changes, also the psycho-social level, intervene politically in different forms. There are social strata that are strangers in their own country and do not share the same present with others. For them, looking to the past is the only way to imagine a different future. If they are looking for values and authority, …

A Trumpian Mechanism, Emmett Peixoto May 2021

A Trumpian Mechanism, Emmett Peixoto

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In 2016, a liar made a hypocrite appear worse and thereby won the US presidency. How did a liar, which is traditionally deemed something worse than a hypocrite, manage to do this? This article offers an answer. It does so by uncovering a peculiar mechanism, a Trumpian mechanism, at the heart of Trump’s relations with his critics. The mechanism explains how Trump benefited from wrong-footing his critics and is thus essential for understanding Trump’s success. The article offers a few key examples of this mechanism working against Trump’s political opponents, e.g., Trump’s (first) impeachment. It then shows how the mechanism …

Authoritarianism And Ideology, Asad Haider May 2021

Authoritarianism And Ideology, Asad Haider

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In “Authoritarianism and Ideology,” Asad Haider approaches the problem of authoritarianism by considering the classical question of tyranny, as framed by Spinoza, and how this can be traced to the Marxist theory of ideology. A fundamental axis of the debate over ideology in twentieth century Marxism was the phenomenon of fascism, theorized in highly influential but also markedly different ways by figures like Wilhelm Reich and Theodor Adorno. A close reading of two major texts—Reich's Mass Psychology of Fascism and Adorno's contributions to The Authoritarian Personality—provides a basis for conceptually elaborating different directions that can be taken in the study …

More Than “Just” Walking: An Observational Study Of Dog-Related Physical Activities, Benedikt Hielscher, Udo Ganslosser, Ingo Froboese

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Dog ownership has been shown to correlate with physical activity (PA). However, knowledge about the intensities of dog-related PA (drPA) is still lacking. To investigate the duration and intensity of drPA in consideration of PA guidelines, an observational study of dog owners (DO) was conducted.

For this purpose, DO were recruited in metropolitan and nonmetropolitan regions of Cologne, Germany. A total of 44 male and female DO (18–64 years) without cardiovascular or cardiopulmonary diseases participated in the study. Validated questionnaires were used to determine the PA profile and relationship of DO to their dog. Participants reported their drPA in an …

Radiation Hardened Technologies For Microelectronics In Space, Ricardo Xie May 2021

Radiation Hardened Technologies For Microelectronics In Space, Ricardo Xie

Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference

Semiconductor devices and integrated circuits (ICs) used in spacecraft are exposed to large amounts of ionizing radiation. These environmental hazards can result in consequences for microelectronic devices ranging from temporary loss of data to permanent loss of spacecraft functionality. The purpose of this project is to study the Single Event Effects (SEE) of memories in the low-earth orbital radiation environment. SEEs are caused by a single ionizing radiation particle passing through a sensitive region of an electronic or photonic device. Prediction of SEE occurrence rate requires knowledge of both radiation environment and electronic devices. To address this problem using a …

Glycosylation Of Immune Receptors In Cancer, Ruoxuan Sun, Alyssa Min Jung Kim, Seung-Oe Lim

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Evading host immune surveillance is one of the hallmarks of cancer. Immune checkpoint therapy, which aims to eliminate cancer progression by reprogramming the antitumor immune response, currently occupies a solid position in the rapidly expanding arsenal of cancer therapy. As most immune checkpoints are membrane glycoproteins, mounting attention is drawn to asking how protein glycosylation affects immune function. The answers to this fundamental question will stimulate the rational development of future cancer diagnostics and therapeutic strategies.

Microstructural Refinement Of Cement Paste Internally Cured By Polyacrylamide Composite Hydrogel Particles Containing Silica Fume And Nanosilica, Baishakhi Bose, Cole R. Davis, Kendra Erk May 2021

Microstructural Refinement Of Cement Paste Internally Cured By Polyacrylamide Composite Hydrogel Particles Containing Silica Fume And Nanosilica, Baishakhi Bose, Cole R. Davis, Kendra Erk

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Supplementary cementitious materials were incorporated into hydrogel-based internal curing agents to improve the hydration, microstructure, and ultimately strength of internally cured high-performance cement paste. Polyacrylamide composite hydrogel particles containing amorphous silica – either silica fume or nanosilica – and two different polymer network crosslink densities were synthesized and incorporated into cement paste. The presence of silica and low crosslink density increased the absorption capacity of the particles in pore solution. Micrographs of internally cured paste indicated a significant improvement in hydrogel-related void-filling ability and an increase in void size for low crosslink density particles containing silica. Compressive strength and electrical …

Experimental Investigation Of Liquid And Vapor Mass Flows In A Parallel Tube Evaporator, Christian Kollik, Andreas Ennemoser, Michael Lang, Raimund Almbauer, Kevin Wimmer, Lukas Dür, Christoph Zainer

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

One of the major challenges in the evaluation of an evaporator heat exchanger in refrigeration cycles is to provide reasonable measurement data. Especially if the evaporator is multi-flow and therefore the measurement of the mass flow at one location and the evaluation of the overall energy balance is not sufficient for the characterization of the heat exchanger. In the present work, an evaporator of a capacity of approx. 1.2 kW, consisting of a distributor, a collector and four parallel evaporator tubes in which heat was introduced, was experimentally investigated. The four evaporator tubes made of stainless steel with an inner …

Enhancement Of The Critical Heat Flux During The Cooling Of Power Electronics, Yuyang Hu, Oliver Ziegler, Christiane Thomas, Ullrich Hesse, Stefan Wettengel, Andreas Kluge, Lars Lindenmüller, Gerd Fischer

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

Semiconductor-based power electronics such as IGBT (insulated-gate bipolar transistor) modules are used in various applications. During their operation, several kilowatts of waste heat are produced in a single module, which must be specifically dissipated in order to guarantee reliable operation. With the trend towards the downsizing of modules and the demand for high power density in the development of new IGBT-modules, there is a need for efficient heat dissipation. Within the scope of a research project the principle of a natural circulation is investigated for the application of cooling power electronics referring to a patent of Fischer, Langebach and Lindenmüller …
